  • A London Buses Leyland National vid now from way back in April 1986. In May that year Loughton Garage closed and red London buses no longer ran out to Epping, North Weald and Ongar. See LS's on route 201 along with an SNB on London Country route 500 and enjoy the Leyland National thrash, complete with blue smoke! If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Hello Soi, this is bringing many tingles of comfort, thank you, although not my area, but those red LS's are making me smile as they ran round my area (Orpington) and were the buses I first rode on (route 284). Thanks for filming such a beautiful energy of the time. Best regards.

That must have been after LT got rid of it then. When I was at college in Aberystwyth in the late 90s, I rode on Crosville buses (Olympians) acquired from London & Country which had been on the 409 a few months previously from Croydon to East Grinstead, which I'd ridden to my sixth form college on. They still had the London Country seat upholstery and LT no-smoking signs (no "dim ysmygu"). They replaced old Bristols.

When Epping had decent bus services. I remember nationals on the 167, 201, 250, 206, 500 and 502 from Loughton and Harlow garages. Anyone remember a company called Borderbus? I think they were based in Loughton.

Yeah there's no good bus routes anymore. The 87 wasn't too bad but how can Arriva and other private companies compete with running services between Epping and Loughton with the underground. I bet people miss the Ongar line now

Gee whiz, first time I've seen footage of an NBC National in action after knowing about them for many years from books etc.
Sydney has a suburb called Epping and Leyland Nationals from a nearby bus company were a regular sight there. I grew up near Epping. They were seen there until 1986.
Here is a 1978 pic of a newly delivered one (of eight purchased).

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus glad you like the colour scheme. It's the first one I saw on a National and made a powerful impression on 6 yo me.
The sound is something that never leaves you.
Our ones tended to be revved harder between gears as they were set to semi automatic gear change. Boy did they scream!!
The ones in your videos are driven very subdued in comparison.
I flicked though a lot of these other John Ward pictures on Flickr and there are lots of pics from Manila as well as the UK you may want to check out. It's a great collection.
Here's a pair of RTs paying a visit to the depot I used to drive buses out of!

@@jamesfrench7299 The London Country ones that I used to drive like yours, were semi automatic too and they got revved higher than the London Country example at the start of the clip. To this day ( I still drive buses in London now though), they were my favourite buses to drive and would love to drive one again. I think the last time I drove a National was some time in the mid 90s. Happy days!

@@Knightyknight72 for some reason the clutch fan doesn't seem to roar at full sing like they did here.
Could be the warmer climate made them activate fully here or we had more blades!! They are one of two bus types I experienced where the fan noise is an essential part of their character together with the engine noise. The other was the fully automatic Mercedes Benz 0305s a ordered en mass in the 70s. When the Merc's clutch fan got worn, they sounded quite bland. I only witnessed one National with a slipping fan and it sounded like it was sick. I think the engine was worn out as well.
