Watching Maria Clara and Ibarra made me realize that El Filbusterismo is a novel that is dark and highly vengeful, representing the full transformation of Ibarra to Simoun, from being a peaceful reformer to an instigator of a revolution. Massive respect to Dr. Jose Rizal whose works are well-respected and well-known throughout the world. Noli and El Fili ranks alongside with many great literary works like Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, to Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
The only thing that I am disappointed are some of the viewers who want the story to end happily which violates and disrespects the work of our National Hero. They are forgetting that the reason why Klay entered the pages of this novel is to learn about the lessons of those times while her love story with Fidel is merely a sub-plot. El Filibusterismo is written to show the tragedies of the Filipinos under the Spanish Colonial rule.
Filipino audiences are a lot of work on this part. It's becoming annoying to hear that they always want a happy ending but that is not how everything works. This is where many of our Asian neighbors have beaten us which is their ability to watch and accept different shows both with tragic and happy endings.
