  • IBCLC explains a natural feeding position for newborns that allows them to take bottles in sidelying position (similar to the "cross-cradle" hold used for breastfeeding). This is a gentle way to pace bottle feeds, reduce gulping/air swallowing, and teach feeding skills. It may reduce baby's confusion alternating between breast and bottle.

Babies do not need to “work” for their food.

In the same way that chewing is the “work” of eating for those with teeth, sucking is the “work” of eating for infants. While chewing requires effort it’s incredibly beneficial to jaw and muscle development/stability, digestion, and even pleasure. For adults, a blended diet would take away the work but also the necessary benefits of chewing (as any person who has had to be put on a blended diet long term can attest). The same is true for babies deriving benefit and even pleasure from sucking in an active, engaged way vs gravity fed.

My baby is 17 weeks on Sunday and has always gotten 1 to 2 bottles a day since birth, but recently refuses all bottles. I have an overactive letdown so I went up to a number 2 nipple or medium flow ones since the old ones seemed to slow for her and even tried another bottle and still the same. Usually my husband gives the bottles and I also tried freshly pumped milk and that didn't work either ? I am at a loss and she'll only take them at night when she's sleeping. Any advice would be much appreciated.
