Me and my best friend have been traumatized by the actions of the Italian AI in 2 games yesterday. First game, My friend is fighting Germany as France while I'm Poland, being sandwiched by the Germans and the Soviets. Italy is in our faction, and I'm fighting for my life while my friend is grinding troops and manpower in a slow expansion to Germany. Italy? Italy is just sitting there and doing nothing as the two of us are screaming at Italy to just do something as Austria, Germany and the Soviet gobble up all our allies in Eastern europe. Second game with me as France and my friend as Austria, the two of us have somehow managed to get almost everybody in europe against Germany (Including UK and Italy). My friend has countries in his faction (which Italy is a part of, I have countries in my action and the UK has its own faction. The two of us have a prime opportunity to have Germany fight a four front war and get surrounded by enemies. Then Italy declares war on Greece, Britain's ally, and then the British and Italian factions start fighting amongst themselves, leaving me and my friend alone to face the Germans. To make matters worse, Czechoslovakia was a part of the British faction, so my friend got sandwiched between rhe Germans and the Czechs, getting wiped out. Meanwhile, the fricking British managed to expand till they are bordering Berlin and then just sit there doing nothing as they start fighting Italy. My friend is cursing Italy for messing up such an amazing alliance up, and I'm screaming at the British sitting right next to Berlin to keep pushing as Germany punches divisions through Netherlands and marches right up to Paris. Screw you Italy, tomorrow me and my friend are playing as France and Germany just for the express purpose of killing Italy.
I remember when my troops were in exile after a peace deal and the kept trying to exit though a port and it kept getting cancelled I had to assign them to an order and cross the country by land for them to get out of exile.
This bug sucks. It also occurs on impassable terrain, and yes, it can even pen units in place. I've literally lost units be because the combat doesn't last long enough to drain organization but just long enough to chip strength instead as well as prevent reinforcement (as it spams it multiple times every hour). Nothing like setting up a defensive line and leaving it be for a couple years while you focus elsewhere only to find out half the troops got locked in place and died due to a bug.
When i was playing as historical uk i naval invaded italy in just a bit north of Rome and split their country in half and the southern front had almost all non city provinces defended except rome
If you want to beat Italy with monarchical/democratic Ethiopia, I have a trick for you. In the first days, Italy takes its troops out of the desert. You have to be attentive during the first 30 days of the war to take advantage and advance on undefended terrain and take the ports and surround his troops, do not destroy those troops, just surround them, after that the southern front is going to completely stagnate and Italy is not going to try anything and you can dedicate all the resources you get as the war goes on to defend the north
