The dragon is a symbol of Ljubljana, that's the reason there are dragons on the bridge, not lions. The legend says that the castle was guarded by a dragon until some guy killed it and founded Ljubljana. There is a dragon on Ljubljana's flag and emblem as well. The central of the three bridges is much older and it was used for traffic. At that time, this was a very important road and it got very crowded. About 90 years ago our greatest architect Jože Plečnik (he designed a market next to the bridges as well) added two more bridges for pedestrians. Because our goal is to create a better and sustainable city, we renovated the whole city center and closed it for traffic. That is the reason today all three bridges are used for pedestrians and cyclists only. I'm glad you enjoyed LJ. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for explaining. I knew those dragons were not a mistake and there was an interesting story behind it and that's exactly what my guide told me. What a beautiful city!
The statue in the middle of the market near three bridges is France Preseren our famous poet and the girl above is Julija Primic , the daughter of a rich merchant, who would become the unfulfilled love of his life. In 1833.

No, he was right, the bridge was first intented to commemmorate the 40 years of ruling of, well, whoever was the emperor of Austro-Hungary that time, which LJ was a part of and they were supposed to put lions and eagles there to honor the ruler, BUT once they got the money for the decor from Vienna, they did a bold move and put dragons, the symbol of the city, instead. Croatia now is a EU member but still not a Schengen member. When you enter Slovenia from Croatia you are supposed to be confronted with a thorough border check as you enter the Schengen area. Once you have passed this you can freely travel to all other Schengen countries in Europe (unless there are random selected border controls which unfortunately happen more and more because of the illegal immigrant situation).
@@korencek International arbitration does not enforce anything. Our Politicians need to do that. Instead of justifying their inaction by 'avoiding war', they should use the 'good relations' with Croatia to enforce Slovenian cultural & linguistic dominance. Hence, If we have an advantage over them, why aren't we using it to further 'our' cause?!
Yes it is, i m Croatian and i admitt that. Its very green and with beautifull nature, but it is very small, about 20000 km2, Ljubljana(about 300000 inhabitants) and Maribor(110000) are like the only cityies, and there is a bunch of small towns 10000-20000 inhabitants and a lot of villages, but its all very urban.
@@DanegerAndStacey Maybe you could compare good things in croatia and slovenia, besides that i think that both countries are beautifull and it is the best visit them both because they have border one with other and both of them are not large.
That's Europe for you...one can go to another country, see different architecture, eat different food, drink different drinks, hear different language and music...and it's all 2-3 hours, or less, away.
But you guys should check the whole Slovenia-Bled lake, Bohinji, Ptuj, Triglav hike, Postojna cave, Predjamski grad-a castle in a cave; the seaside, Lipica famous for their horses, Socka river...sooo many things and places, in one tinyyyyy country, which is very underrated... and the best part - they don't have heavy industry- always ecological and green!
About the dragons story..if you visit Postojna cave they have this animal- olm, which is called the small dragon as follows: The first written mention of the olm is in Johann Weikhard von Valvasor's The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola (1689) as a baby dragon. Heavy rains of Slovenia would wash the olms up from their subterranean habitat, giving rise to the folklore belief that great dragons lived beneath the Earth's crust, and the olms were the undeveloped offspring of these mythical beasts. In his book Valvasor compiled the local Slovenian folk stories and pieced together the rich mythology of the creature and documented observations of the olm as "Barely a span long, akin to a lizard, in short, a worm and vermin of which there are many hereabouts". About the 3 bridges i believe it was to do with an earthquake which destroyed the original one, but don't remember the year. I found some more detailed info why there are 3 bridges:There is mention of a wooden bridge in this location from 1280. It was at first called the Old Bridge (Stari most) and later the Lower Bridge (Spodnji most), in contrast to the Upper Bridge that was built in the location of the nowadays Cobblers' Bridge in the same century. It was also named the Špital Bridge (Špitalski most) after the nearby poorhouse, which was established in the early 14th century. It was built anew in 1657 after a fire. In 1842, the Lower Bridge was replaced by a new bridge designed by Giovanni Picco, an Italian architect from Villach, and named Franz's Bridge, (Frančev most) in honor of Archduke Franz Karl of Austria. It also became known as the Franciscan Bridge (Frančiškanski most). This bridge, opened on 25 September 1842, had two arches and a metal fence. The essentials of the bridge have been preserved until today, which is evidenced by the inscribed dedication to the archduke above its central pier, reading in Latin "ARCHIDVCI. FRANCISCO. CAROLO. MDCCCXLII. CIVITAS.", which means "To Archduke Franz Karl in 1842 by the Town." In order to prevent the 1842 stone arch bridge from being a bottleneck, the architect Jože Plečnik designed in 1929 the extension of the bridge with two footbridges at a slight angle on each side of it. In collaboration with his student Ciril Tavčar, who drew the plans, he published the proposal in the same year in the journal Ljubljanski Zvon.[5] Construction started in 1931 and continued until spring 1932. The bridge was opened for traffic in April 1932. The bridge was renovated in 1992. Since 2007, all the three bridges have been part of the Ljubljana pedestrian-only zone.
The statue is of the famous poet of Slovenia France Prešeren, and the story goes that the statue stands on a pedestal includes a sculpture of the poet, facing the window where his adored Julija Primic used to live, and a sculpture of a Muse above him sitting on a rock and holding a laurel branch in her hand. Unfortunately she did not married him and her face you can see on the one of the buildings on that square, looking towards him. She never replied to his feelings although most of his poetry was devoted to her. But she was from rich important family, and he was just a poet. Instead she married a lawyer.
I love how you guys captured it, i feel like a lot of us commute to Ljubljana for work and don’t appreciate the city so much. Also the abandoned building is called Rog (a lot of concerts and art exhibitions there sometimes).

Long border crossing waiting into Schengen is dut to migrant crisis. 4 years ago I traveled with a bus to Spain and Croatia-Slovenia border crossing took about 10-15 minutes. In the years before that I traveled several times to Ausria with a bus and also too no more than 15min.
On those three bridges in the same place - what I remember from the tour guide, the central one was for the carriages in XIX century and the side ones were for the pedestrians in 1920-ies. Initially only the central one existed, but it was a bottleneck for the increasing traffic in the city, so they've decided to build the pedestrian ones on the sides. As they have closed the old town for any vehicle traffic few years back, all three bridges are for pedestrians now. So instead of demolishing old one, they just build the side ones :-)
As always, greaaat video guys! So laid-back and yet chock-full of great info, lovely views and of course, some snazzy editing..not that I know any :P but I can spot a good one haha. Had no clue you guys had gone to Ljubljana! My wife and I had a similar thing happen: plans canceled last minute and decided to hop a bus to Slovenia. Ljubljana feels like the authentic version of what most Western European cities tell you they are. There's a magic and a charm to it. We came through in Autumn of 2021, but I'd love to go back in the summer and explore the Julian Alps.
"Made it to Slovenia." I'm going to say that one day too. Just got back from Europe in November, 2019 I want to go to Slovenia specifically for my next trip.
Great video! I have been following your vlogs for a few weeks now and I'm really enjoying them and your style. Keep up the good work! Seeing as you're in the region, I think you guys should think about visiting Belgrade if you haven't considered it already. It's a bit more "rough around the edges" than Ljubljana and Zagreb, but I think you would enjoy the vibe and feel of the city - lots of eateries, outdoor cafes, street art, craft beers, ecclectic mix of new/old buildings and interesting sights. I'd be interested to see how you compare it to the "more touristy", other ex-Yugoslav capitals of Zagreb and Ljubljana - Adam
Hey Adam - thanks for following along! You know we've actually heard AMAZING things about Belgrade, it was on our list for a very long time but some how always seemed to be difficult to get to the next stop, or flight, or transfer to places we had pre-booked. It is definitely on the cards for us, most likely next year now, but its cool to know you put it on the same level!
Happy to hear you're thinking about Belgrade and I'll just have to wait until next year then! I'm pretty sure you'll like it. I came here 11 years ago and never left! Looking forward to your next videos - Adam
Hi Daneger and Stacey you're welcome it's always fun to watch your vlogs! I've been traveling lately to Barcelona, Andorra, Napoli, Amalfi Coast in May and the Philippines in July. It was awesome spending time with my husband and my vlogger son Jay Jay (Jaycation is his YT channel) take care you guys!😊
The reason why there are three bridges in the same place is because in the past one of the bridges was for cars and tram and the other two were for the pedestrians. Now however the bridge is closed for cars and the tram has ben remuved so thay are all for pedestrians. But the middle bridge is still used for delivery trucks and emergency vehicles.
it's a 3bridge and first was for walkers on sides and cars on the main bridge, and it was build by most important slovene architect Jože Plečnik, whos is also city river shore regulation with buildings and fences...
We're excellent! Actually back in Bali now, videos are behind, enjoying an awesome villa with our friends for the month :) Hope things are good with you
WOW Wow wow what a great place, UA-cam should have a I LOVE This Button!!! My list is soooo long now!! don't think I will have the time to see all the places on it.. had for the first time a Czech Beer Kozel, Dark, love it. one of the best beers I have had. heard the Czech love their beer so much they put it in almost everything even cosmetics, Now that is a place I could live.. can't wait for the next video..
Sorry for adding more to your list - but definitely make sure that Ljubljana stays on there! Oh awesome, not sure we actually tried the dark Kozel, but we've seen it everywhere now that we recognise the logo. Cant miss it really.
Cool that you could spot it! Oh that factory - we think it makes sense now, we saw something from the other side that looked like a art area that was large.
I don't know if this has been written yet. The three bridges were made because the center one was for traffic (public trasnport) which was later dismissed.
I now live abroad, but I grew up in Slovenia and went to University in Ljubljana. :) It really is a beautiful city, everything is basically in a walking distance, tempo is very slow-moving and people just take time to go for a cup of coffee or a walk. Name Ljubljana is similar to a Slovenian word 'ljubljena', which means 'one who is loved''.
If you are going back to Zagreb. Go to the upper down there is a beautiful apartment that they have turned into a museum. It's located at 3 Demetrova street
You're awesome! Sadly most people only watch about 5 minutes, but UA-cam likes 10 minute+ videos. We filmed so much this day the second part is 13 minutes long as well!
If I like the vloggers I watch the whole video they produce...check out how long Mark Wiens videos are and I watch the whole thing...A fan will watch whole thing Love you guys
What a useful FYI... Border crossing time (factored in to Flix schedule)... As I haven't wandered outside of Schengen Zone this is helpful... :) Wouldn't worry about looooong vlogs... If they're interesting, we'll enjoy them... :) Looking forward to the rest of time in Ljubljana & back in Croatia...
Sad thing is the majority of people only make it to about 5 minute mark and tune out, stoked to hear that you're there until the end :) The last 2 Ljubljana vlogs are great, just edited our Food Tour and think it might just be our best video. Ever.
Me and my friends are thinking of stopping off here for 3 days or so whilst inter railing. We are all 17-18 and wondering stuff there is to do for guys like us?
We've got a few videos on Buda as well - much bigger city, lots more going on. But feels like a big city in a lot of ways, Ljubljana's got a cool small feeling to it. Lots of cool bars in Budapest though
So you guys CAN be tourists when you decide to be! Interesting when you commented about the ability to just hop on a bus and go to a completely different country - it's such a novelty to us island dwellers isn't it! We stopped at the Indian/Nepalese border during our trip to India and I felt exactly the same islanders' sense of "wow, that's another country past the customs gate" ha ha!
Absolutely can haha, the continuation of this vlog is probably even more touristy and winging it - adds a nice mix :) Such a novelty to just pass through to a different country for one night. Did you guys cross over or just happened to be close?
+ Daneger and Stacey We did a trip into the Himalayan foothills to visit a tea plantation at Gopaldhara which is not far from the Nepalese border. We decided to go to the border just for the hell of it. Wife, kids and sister in law could have crossed the border into Nepal as citizens or former Indian citizens, but I don't have the OCI status (need to apply!) so my UK passport + Indian visa was not enough for me to cross the border. The border guards were polite and friendly but couldn't break the rules, so we just stood at the barrier and looked into Nepal :) It was misty too which made it super atmospheric, but they wouldn't let us take photos of the border post so had to take some nearby..

Happy to hear you're thinking about Belgrade and I'll just have to wait until next year then! I'm pretty sure you'll like it. I came here 11 years ago and never left! Looking forward to your next videos - Adam
Oww ljubljana is in winter and new year so beautiful I promise becouse it is decorating with chrismas lights 😍😍

I can definitely tell your excitement on arrival. It’s infectious. Haha are you sure you just had only coffee? The three bridges look awesome
Hahah maybe a few sneaky beers 🤭
Daneger and Stacey 😂😂😂 totally explains it
What was the time / season you guys were in ljubljana? What’s best off season time to visit ?
LJUBLJANA ❤️ SLOVENIJA
Amazing place!
The reason why there are three bridges in the same place is because in the past one of the bridges was for cars and tram and the other two were for the pedestrians. Now however the bridge is closed for cars and the tram has ben remuved so thay are all for pedestrians. But the middle bridge is still used for delivery trucks and emergency vehicles.
it's a 3bridge and first was for walkers on sides and cars on the main bridge, and it was build by most important slovene architect Jože Plečnik, whos is also city river shore regulation with buildings and fences...
hello Dane and Stacey, LOVE this quaint little place! And the 'bidges' :P CUUTE :) Hope you two are well. Xx
We're excellent! Actually back in Bali now, videos are behind, enjoying an awesome villa with our friends for the month :) Hope things are good with you
Truple bridge:the one in the middle, the big one... Cars used to drive through the Prešeren square
Living in Ljubljana this video really shows all of it's beauty!
If you gonna try the dark kozel have a good chocolate before drinking..
Goooooood morninggggggg! I've been waiting for this video!
The next 2 vids are great - we really loved it there!
nice video with a relaxing vibe!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
Thats my home town at 2:06!!! Lovely video!
At 5:42: Thats actualy an old factory that made bikes like the Pony Bikes ( google it) now its a alternative art area with skate parks
Cool that you could spot it! Oh that factory - we think it makes sense now, we saw something from the other side that looked like a art area that was large.
I’m from Slovenia 😊
a rare instance of tourists saying Ljubljana correctly. Bravo!
Really? Wow, Ok we'll definitely take that - thank you!
Awesome vlog. Places are amazing 😊 Wanna go there after watching your vlog😁
We're back in Zagreb now and we want to go back as well haha! Love Croatia, but 1 night wasnt enough there.

Im from Slovenia and its soo funny when people cant say corectly Ljubljana😂Btw i love your videos❤🌎
Ty soo much for the hearttt🌎❤
The way Stacey says "yeah" should become an inspiration for music producers seeking fresh voice samples. Feeling Ljubljana, charming vid guys ;)
Haha when you make the track let us know k?
Sure. It's going to be a failure in a good way ;)
Wow you guys are from New Zealand I just subscribed looking for videos on slovenia seen your food one. Love your guys channel. Go kiwis
Thanks for the Kiwi love!
Wow! first to comment. Great work as usual, guys. Can't wait to go here one day
Ah Sarah you just slipped into 2nd 🥈close one though! You really need to visit, such a beautiful city.
I don't know if this has been written yet. The three bridges were made because the center one was for traffic (public trasnport) which was later dismissed.
Slovenia is beautiful
Ljubljana=Paris in a nut shell :)
Thats our experience as well, so chill, relaxed and calm in the city
u guys bring me a lot ideas of trip to eu
Happy to hear that ;)
Thank you. I like VDO. Beautiful👍💕💕☺
thanks as always 💕
good stuff. What is your camera setting most of of the time.
60fps :)
Thanks mate
If you are going back to Zagreb. Go to the upper down there is a beautiful apartment that they have turned into a museum. It's located at 3 Demetrova street
The video was not long we can handle longer videos ..it was really enjoyable to watch you guys ...you are great
You're awesome!
Yeah his are so long! We wish we had more fans like you then - keep being awesome 🙏🏼
Three bridges! Love the idea.Wonder which one is the most favourite?
What a useful FYI... Border crossing time (factored in to Flix schedule)...
As I haven't wandered outside of Schengen Zone this is helpful... :)
Wouldn't worry about looooong vlogs... If they're interesting, we'll enjoy them... :)
Looking forward to the rest of time in Ljubljana & back in Croatia...
Sad thing is the majority of people only make it to about 5 minute mark and tune out, stoked to hear that you're there until the end :) The last 2 Ljubljana vlogs are great, just edited our Food Tour and think it might just be our best video. Ever.
Bring it on...!
Me and my friends are thinking of stopping off here for 3 days or so whilst inter railing. We are all 17-18 and wondering stuff there is to do for guys like us?
2 days is probably better - good for drinking some beers, eating, coffee, little bit of exploring.
Thanks, probably would go to lake bled as well so maybe 3rd day could be that. Although we may decide Budapest instead of Ljubljana
We've got a few videos on Buda as well - much bigger city, lots more going on. But feels like a big city in a lot of ways, Ljubljana's got a cool small feeling to it. Lots of cool bars in Budapest though
the 'abandoned building' at 5:30 was a bycicle factory that went out of business and now its inhabited by like artsy shady folk
its called tovarna rog
There was a Jazz n Blues club on one of the small side streets. Anyone know the name of the street or location?
Hope someone eventually comments and let’s you know!
Best channel on UA-cam
Too kind - thank you! Excited to share the next few vlogs from here.
Good job guys !
Thanks Paul!
Lol you were just a few meters away from my flat😂😂😂
You live in a cool place!
The three bridges are a masterpiece of a famous Slovenian rhchitecht Jože Plečnik
Yes I was just going to ask where are you staying that place looks great
So you guys CAN be tourists when you decide to be!
The tea plantation must have been fascinating to see! Cool that it was so close to the border that you guys could at least take a misty look over 👌🏼
@@DanegerAndStacey It was amazing. I've uploaded some pics to Instagram

Why is it a surprise that we are using euros?
In hindsight it's not really a surprise at all because you're part of Schengen - but after Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia it just surprised us to be using Euro again
