TUBES! press the tubes while playing and you are gonna notice that the rattle stop, the filaments inside the tubes are rattling because the speaker is pushing too much air backwards. Is not a speaker problem, just tubes, you can replace the tubes and could work or maybe not, is a very common COMBO AMP PROBLEM. Good luck!
My brand new Marshall JTM combo studio has tube rattling as soon as I connected to the separate speaker cabinet no more rattle because there’s no more vibration from the speaker amp has awesome tone but the rattle sucks and hit it with a pedal then it’s really noticeable gonna take it back and order the head and speaker cab
dont know if you have resolved it or not I had the same issue in a Peavey Classic. It was from a power tube. My research indicated that it is common in combos as tubes are subjected to hits from wave after wave of sound from the speakers to know if its from a power tube, you have some one play the offending note, usually a low frequency note causes the rattle, and you try to hold each tube in turn or two tubes at a time with hands in thermal gloves and see if the rattle stops. I emphasize: Tubes are hot and you will need your hand (and all other parts of your body) to be thermally isolated and not directly touching them let me know if you have solved it and what your solution was please
Thanks for watching and contributing! I haven’t replaced the tubes yet, only annoys me at low volumes, and I usually play loud so I can deal with it. I also own a 50w Peavy Classic 4x10, and those are probably due for a change also. Crap this is getting expensive!
Hi, This might be one or both power tubes. You can try to tap the power tubes one at the time with the amp turned on, if you get the rattle once you tap the tube it means that needs to be replaced. Please keep in mind that the vibration from the speaker been so close will make this to happen quicker than head and cabinet
Just unboxed mine today and same problem with the mysterious rattling as tuns out was #2 power tube making noise. I used a glove and held tube in question while playing loud low e note as definitely was the culprit. Disappointed as this was (supposedly) right from GC warehouse.
I had this EXACT problem with a few new fender 65 deluxe reverb reissues.. long story short I ended up returning the amp because I felt like it wasn't my responsibility to change the tubes in a brand new amp. The issue happened back to back and the guys at my local Sam Ash acted like their was nothing wrong with it... cant believe there's not more stuff about this on reviews.cause it was the same issue on 2 brand new amps right out of the box.
Pat Millen thanks for sharing your experience. I bought mine second hand so I assumed some risk. Maybe the sale people you dealt with were inexperienced but then again they should be trying to help a customer. I’ll have to do a comparison once I get fresh tubes. Thanks again for watching!
FYI: it’s known Fender Reissues that have tube rattle on certain notes aren’t always a power tube issue. It’s well documented and a Fender tech changed 6 set of tubes in front of me. It was the Tube Holders on a LOT of the new reissues. Once the Power Tube holders were replaced no issue. Many touring musicians do not take out their nice amps on the road. But don’t be fooled! Those reissues that are using are torn apart by a tech, parts upgraded and replaced. Buy a used Reissue that’s new $1499 for $800-$900 local mint. Bring it to a tech for quality of life upgrades at $300.. for $1,200 you’ll have a better than new amp that will last you for years to come. New prices on reissues, are projects out the box to be road and recording ready. Also if you love Fender look at an older one, and price in the $300 tech visit. 60s Super Reverbs if you don’t mind the weight, can be found local at reissue new prices. Then a tech look or maybe the owner did it and your good to go. Tube amps are an investment so do it right the first time. I def learned that lesson!
Hello Richard, Tube rattle is nothing to worry about. I had it in my Supersonic 22 Combo, merely a worn tube, microphonic, take the metal covers off and tap them with a wooden appliance ie chopstick, or pencil, with the amp on, hopefully only a preamp tube is worn, swap it out for a new tube around $20, it happened to me a worn preamp tube. My concern with this amp it is bloody loud, need an attenuator, or volume box, pedal in the efx loop, but a truly lovely, versatile amp and very underated.
Hey, I just had the exact same problem! I actually A/Bed two identical Hot Rod IV in the store and both of them had the same rattling issue. I'm guessing that is the internal tube construction issue in which some stuff are vibrating inside. Or maybe something else totally different have no idea. The surprising part is that I actually tried a '64 Custom Shop Hand-wired Deluxe Reverb ($4000+ in Australia) and it also had some sort of rattle in the cab as well! go figure...
I have similar rattle in both my 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb and Marshall DSL40C. Just ordered exact same power tubes for the Deluxe, hoping that's all it is and I won't need service. Had similar rattle in AC10, amp tech fixed, said he swapped power tubes and resoldered a couple joints.
Just put the new power tubes in today and rattle is gone, that was definitely it. Tubes ended up not being exactly the same, there were Mesa Boogie 6V6 yellow in there and I put in red, but sounds fine so far. Guess if the amp blows up I'll find out that was important.
Hey Rich. Curious if new tubes helped? I have a pro junior making this exact glassy ringing sound. I suspect the power tubes because as I hold a towel and press gently against the bottom of the power tubes, the glassy rattle stops.
Hi Rich, did you ever get to the bottom of this. My Princeton has been doing the same thing. I managed to narrow it down to 2 rattling power amp tubes and to of the metal preamp tube covers were rattling. My princeton has a 12 " speaker in and it seems to be any tubes that were directly behind the speaker were rattling.
Just found this video, I just bought a used SS22 and tubes in it are Groove tube power tubes original And preamp JJ replacements. I did bite the bullet and found a complete matched set of JJ’s as a back up for 147.00 mark down from 172.00 should be good to go. Thanks for this helpful video.

Is a common issue with power tubes. I had the same with my '65 DRRI and also with my Marshall SL5. I replaced the EL34 on SL5 for a Tung-Sol, and silence is now my friend. On the DRRI, i can hear the rattle tapped one of 6V6 with a wood hashi.
This is one of the signs when a tube is going bad they get super touch sensitive with like funky crystalline harmonics tap on it when/amps on you will hear it thru the speaker if its bad. It sounds like a few people out there have change their tubes it's part of maintaining a tube amp some people should stay with solid state tubeless amps if they don't want the bother!
Troy McDonald that’s what I’m thinking. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I did purchase the amp used, so just not sure how many hours it logged prior to me.
Not putting this in a thread so it may get noticed better: Rich Hoffman I had the same issues with a Laney L5 studio, even without a cab and just headphones on. It could be influenced by drive and reverb (chip) on both channels. I replaced all the tubes (with tung-sols if anyone cares). It had a mix of 2 TAD and a ruby 1ax7 and a ruby el84 (its single ended class A so only 1 power tube) and the problem is gone. It was actually the el84 giving problems but while testing the only suspicious tube was the 12ax7 ruby because it was microphonic.
Curious if you've fixed this? If not, you may want to try damping rings. Combo amps have a tendency to vibrate alot, and some tubes rattle like crazy at certain frequencies. I had a Deluxe Reverb come in today and it fixed my issue.
Yes this! I got two Fender 68 Custom Pro Reverb amps from Sweetwater. First one had the metallic rattle. Barely touch the offending tube with a shirt or cloth…goes away. Swap the tubes around to see if follows. If it does that’s your one! I was sent a new amp due to tube shortage. Same issue but even worse. And it happen on both at low volumes on specific notes only. It’s a glassy sound that rumbles! Now lots of debate about just replacing both and getting a bias. If you have a new amp warranty cam fix this at no charge. But with tube shortage, wait times it can be a pain. Is the tube actually broken or is it just the filament rattling. Some debate that, but if it sounds good and has a filament rattle. There’s a good chance getting a replacement tube set, and bias may not improve anything. These days with supply shortages, and most playing loud they ignore it. But tube dampeners for a subtle issue where you know the tube it is, glass rattle it can fix it. If it’s really extreme it may only shift it to another note. But imo, it’s best to just put some on new or stock anyway. These days the amount of new combo amps out the box that do this is high! You’re lucky to get one stock with no filament rattle. Fender and most companies are just using what they have. Most won’t complain as a line stage amp cranked. Us practice and recording guys will! Eurotube Dampeners really help!
@@mattg082 yeah I have that problem in my pro reverb RI. The moment I tight the tubes with my hand the rattle is gone. I will try new tubes tmw if not I will change socket and filter caps on the same bench day. I love this amp so bad that it worth the extras

Try to push on each tube with a piece of wood and see if it stops. Once you find the tube you can try replacing our use some electrical tape to isolate.
I have the same amp (7 years old) and same issue. Ive just taken it to my local repair shop where we’ve tried putting some bands around the tubes. Hopefully that will solve it. Otherwise we may have to replace the tubes.
Had exact same problem. It turned out to be bad V4 12AX7. When I tapped it with a pencil you could hear a much quieter rattle but very reminiscent of the sound. The rattle was somehow getting amplified too when playing. Diagnosis - rattly, microphonic tube. Hope this helps Y'all.
Turn the amp on then take a pincel & lightly tap on the tube see if you can hear Anything come thru the speaker if so replace the tube! After making sure it's Not the protective tube cage you are hearing by removing it completely! If all else fails remove the reverb tank completely & retest! The reverb tank is very close to the speaker & Not well isolated & could be picking up harmonics? Worth a shot!
I also have this problem, my new vox ac15 .I want to get overdrive sound, when i turn the vol higher. Its like tube shaking, i can feel the tube filament is trembling, its a new amp. I dont know if its normal, or maybe vol too high or something else, but its definitely not good😐
My Boogie is currently doing the same thing. What you're hearing is the power tube filament rattling/vibrating, more so at the cabinet's resonant frequency. Change your power tubes.
Having this problem with my Monoprice 15w! I just replaced v1 and both el84s but I suspect it's the tung-sol in v1. I have o-rings on them and it's only slightly microphonic but just enough to be annoying. Could I be wrong? Could it just be the EL84s?
Thanks for commenting and joining the discussion! I’m not an expert at tubes but it may be worth changing them if they are old, or just doing an A/b test. Is day it’s possible though.
Same here on my laney l5h studio head, it gets worse when increasing drive and is only there when the reverb (chip) past 6 Pretty sure its a tube, I dont have any spares at the moment but will order some and report back
Damn 4 and half minutes later and I learned nothing. Sweet. Got a brand new fender twin that just came outta the box that's making the same noise u ever figure it out?
Check out some of the other comments here, several people have suggested changing out the tubes, which I have not done yet. Very odd if your brand new amp is having that issue though. Should be handled under warranty if its a new item.
@@RichTones thanks man. I actually ended up getting a refund. Kinda bummed. The store I purchased it from gave me run around and claimed its "just something those amps do". That bs. I've owned twins. I’m very iffy a warranty tube swap may produce the same issues still. It seems to be very common, and the supply shortage doesn’t help!
I’m having the exact same problem with my AC15. Took off the back panel and realized that it’s the tubes rattling from the vibrations inside the combo. Rattle stopped when I touch the tube with the handle of a screwdriver. I’m gonna buy a silicone damper ring to put around the tube to stop it rattling.
Rich Hoffman was thinking the same. Price for a decent tube damper and shipping is nearly €15. Might as well just get a pair of JJs for €25! However I wonder if new tubes will even fix the problem. The reason they’re rattling is because of the volume level. What’s to say that they won’t rattle? I never understood the actual reason certain tubes rattle in the first place.

saccadelic thanks for the tip! I was thinking it may come to that.
Is. It possible it's a preamp tube?
Having this problem with my Monoprice 15w! I just replaced v1 and both el84s but I suspect it's the tung-sol in v1. I have o-rings on them and it's only slightly microphonic but just enough to be annoying. Could I be wrong? Could it just be the EL84s?
Thanks for commenting and joining the discussion! I’m not an expert at tubes but it may be worth changing them if they are old, or just doing an A/b test. Is day it’s possible though.
Hi rich, my super sonic do the same thing. I changed the tubes and the noise continue....!!! I just want to know.... did you solved rhe problem??
No I haven’t changed the tubes yet, and too bad that didn’t solve your issue. Thanks for the comment.
Usually is the power tubes, get the big tube damper rings from eurotubes. They have fixed 3 of my combo amp's tube rattle.
your input is appreciated, I like your amp shootouts.
@@RichTones Thanks check out my twin vs super reverb. You might like
Same here on my laney l5h studio head, it gets worse when increasing drive and is only there when the reverb (chip) past 6
Pretty sure its a tube, I dont have any spares at the moment but will order some and report back
Thanks for sharing your experience.
The whole point of dropping 15hundred on an amp is for the clarity. Then they said "well they break up up that volume". Yeah but that sound is a defect not the amp breaking. "Most ppl don't play them at 5..you can always mic it and run through a pa" and that was the comment that drove me to demand a refund. Damn shame..ill stick with my blackstar for now she's never done me wrong. Best of luck man
Wow they either gave you a line of BS or they don't know what they are talking about! What shop was it if I may ask? Tube breakup is not the same as tubes humming or rattling. That's too bad they didn't help you, and good luck in the future.
@@RichTones place in orange county New York I've gotten 90% of my gear from. I hate dragging businesses through the mud..this is the 1st bad experience I've had with them. I think they were just trying to bs me to not lose the sale. It was the last one in stock so they couldn't even do a comparison or exchange it and the worse part of the whole thing is they restocked it as is, which means the next guys going to drop a ton of dough and go through the same nightmare. Thanks for the vids man keep doin whatcha do 🤘
your input is appreciated, and more videos to come.
Tube is rattling. Difficult to figure it out. Change one at a time til you get the correct tube
Unfortunately I've noticed that I get noise on the AC line, when my furnace or clothes dryer kicks on. Much harder to isolate this. Thanks for your input!
I think you still have the same issue as before. It wasn't the cage. I would start looking at tubes.
I’d agree with you, and I was hoping it wouldn’t come to that.
@@RichTones Tubes arent bad, or that expensive really. If its a loose filament try chopsticking all the tubes. you may get lucky and get it to rattle. Check the output tubes. These things aren't too bad to bias if you do have to replace the outputs, and a set of JJ's will run you around 50 bucks.
I have the same issue with my early 59' Bassman reissued combo amp barely use it, it's like when you bend a certain note and you get weird glassy rattling sound, just had it serviced twice as well
Didn’t the person who serviced give you any insight?
@@RichTones False insight the first time they replaced the power tubes and one capacitor then he was not willing or have someone else to do more work unless I paid him more money for services , the amp does not have a bias adjustment , it was very confusing and frustrating upsetting experience dealing with the Clearwing production located in Colorado, later I found out it was a microphonic tube but now it hums like crazy after I installed a new preamp tube so I'm planning to take another reputable amp tech to see what he can do
@@davidallen346 I'm sure you have resolved this by now, but I have a suggestion. Use EHX tubes in at least the first two positions. They have spiral filaments which kill the hum. I had the exact same problem and that's what fixed it
@@SonovaBish you don't think it has anything to do with grounding problem ? The first amp guy who serviced it told me it has a grounding wire not connected and I brought it to another amp tech he swapped out some tubes I'm not sure which one. But one of the pre amp tube was bad with the chopstick tap test that emits s reverb like note rattle resonance like your video demo when playing on the guitar fretboard area. Now the amp has a loud hum when turn on I might have to take it back to the first amp tech but he charges a premium fee just to look at the amp.
@@davidallen346 I replaced the original tubes with JJ and it hummed almost as loud as the guitar signal. I popped in some EHX and it was gone.
Got a deville and a brand new princeton and got the same problem going crazy
Yes it can be frustrating.
I am looking at a few amp this being 1 I'm wanting so just looking for videos on messed up one since they are expensive
I recommend checking the speaker and the tubes. Mine has some slight noise I can tolerate, it’s not terrible. Great Amp for Blues and blues/rock.
Is there anyway I can make this amp for home use?
What do you mean? For low volume or practicing? I use it all the time in my basement. Planning to use it with a Load Box like Captor X for recording soon, but I Mic it up all the time and record also. Also use it in a Band setting as well.
Give the tubes a tap with a popsicle stick or something while the amp is on
If they are microphonic, might need to be changed
My fender princeton is making this EXACT noise, rattling tube is my theory
Yes I've had a number of responses saying that replacing the tubes will solve it.
@@RichTones Have you tried running the amp through a different cab? It would suck to change out the tubes and not fix the rattle.
@@jeramybarry2013 have not tried but that is a good suggestion. Thanks for pointing that out. I have a 4x10 Peavy combo, that I could try by detaching the Peavy amp from its speakers.
Did you ever track down the cause? i have a very similar issue (fender style circuit built by a small independent builder) but i hear it at even quieter volume and only on certain notes. it’s the same sound though.
No not yet, I'm thinking I need to replace some tubes and test again, but I'm in the middle of some other projects currently. Thanks for watching.
Interested to hear the outcome of this!
Still need my tubes, but in the middle of some other projects currently
Brand new 68 Custom Pro Reverb today - has this sound out of box. Beautiful amp otherwise but man that rattling sound is unbearable.
Uggh that stinks if its brand new. Are you going to ask the dealer to replace it?
@@RichTones Tough part is availability right now.. I think it'll be a while before it could be replaced. In the meantime, I'm looking into warranty service. Btw.. nice Funky Monks riffage ;)
@@willpopemusic True - with the whole supply chain issue everywhere. Good luck with the warranty service. I may upgrade my tubes at some point but have a few other projects going on right now.
Hey same amp and same situation! Was sent a second amp and even words! Narrowed it down u to I one tune filament rattle. The warranty and new tunes is proving to be a hassle in itself. In a last ditch effort I just received some Eurotube dampeners today. I’ll be putting them on later on that offending tube. Hopefully solves it! I’m very iffy a warranty tube swap may produce the same issues still. It seems to be very common, and the supply shortage doesn’t help!
@@mattg082 did the eurotube dampeners work?
This is one of the reasons you buy tube heads.
I have the same noise. It's driving me insane!!!!! 😭😭😭😭
Yeah I thinking of changing the tubes as my last resort. Thanks for watching!
Oh fuck yes!!! 🎉
Had the same issue!
Did you replace the tubes also?
It's the tube socket
I’m having the exact same problem with my AC15. Took off the back panel and realized that it’s the tubes rattling from the vibrations inside the combo. Rattle stopped when I touch the tube with the handle of a screwdriver. I’m gonna buy a silicone damper ring to put around the tube to stop it rattling.
Where would you find those rings?
Rich Hoffman eBay perhaps. Still on the fence though as I read that some of them have burned from the tubes
Yes they do get super hot. I may just try to replace with a fresh set of tubes.
@@jonaflynn74 Eurotubes tube damper will fix it and heat resistant. Check reverb.com or their website.
That’s fret buzz dude
I got rid of hum by using EHX tubes.
How did you like the quality of those tubes?
I would go through in tighten all of the screws.
Check.
