Completely agree with you on Randall Burnett. The problem with that 8 team wasn't the crew chief, but everything else, be it the pressure, the pit crew or the car.
The changes to COTA are are very similar to what was done at the Glen when they cut out “the boot” and for essentially all the same reasons. Shorter caution laps, More laps means fans in the grandstands see the cars more and similarly there are no grandstands in the boot just as there are none in that back section at COTA. Makes total sense to do.
I think Truex had his foot out the door for the last 3 seasons. His indecision to retire or return probably was the biggest thing that was hardest to build a team around. They now have a a younger driver for multiple years they can build a team around.
Yep, put a better Austin, Austin Hill in that car and there'd be results...and renumber to 31 and since Dale Jr owns the 8 font again change that goofy font on KFB's car!

I think that this was the correct move/response from 23/11 and Front Row. NASCAR realized that the teams could possibly win their appeal which would be the reason that they changed the wording to allow the teams to compete while this case continues. It's definitely a chess match and I think that the teams have a strong chance at making improvements to the charter agreements either with a settlement happening outside of court from NASCAR or because of this issue going to court. My opinion from what I have seen so far
As a Kyle Busch fan, I'm happy with Randall as CC. He made some gambles this year that salvaged some good finishes we otherwise wouldn't have had. Not Kyle's best crew chief over the years, but he's one of his better ones despite the results.
Cole Pearn was the best crew chief in the sport. Kinda hard to hold James Small to that standard when he was still doing a great job, better than I thought he would.
Never was a Busch fan but after this season i started feeling bad for him. Even found myself rooting for him and wanting to see him win. As a Larson or nobody fan i use to love the Kyle and Kyle rivalry. But that was when Lason was the underdog and in 2nd tier equipment. Oh how the roles have reversed. But i kinda wish they still had the great battles i watched over the years. Busch needs a better crew chief. And a better team. 😂😂

Well mtj drove for years and years and had respect the entire time and win a championship with a single car team. James small ran him and that team into the ground with piss poor decision making a lot of the time
It will be most interesting to see how J.Small AKA Crocodile Dundee and C.Briscoe AKA Gomer Pyle make out in 2025....will they by as good as Cole Pearn AKA The Canuck and Martin Truex AKA The Fisherman were prior to Pearn's retirement? I find it easy to understand Truex's diminishing interest after Pearn's departure as things were never the same. Also It's easy to relate to Briscoe's exuberance. I do agree, Truex did speed sometimes, but James Small let him run out of gas multiple times as well as not telling him they had not fresh tires sometimes.

Fun fact: F1 is moving their Montreal race date from June to May in 2026. I wonder if that makes a Cup race in Montreal more likely. After all, they could easily get there from Michigan. This news was confirmed a day or two ago by F1 and the FIA themselves. They swapped it with Monaco’s long standing/traditional date, so this shows that it is not just NASCAR who makes dumb decisions like this one.
I really like Randall Burnett. Won 3 races with Busch in 2023. He wasn’t the problem. The cars were and the performance and Randall and Kyle were trying everything they could do with the equipment
Crazy it took a week for this story to really pick up steam because I was listening to that James Small interview on The Morning Drive last Thursday (14th) and no doubt he was throwing shade at MTJ. Said it's nice cause he could text Chase now and would get an immediate response but when he would text Martin he wouldn't get back to him for several days. Also several mentions of MTJ not living in Charlotte so he never saw him during the week. Definitely not a good thing for MTJ fans to hear but I think you could tell he was ready for a change. I think there's a reason JGR kept him to work with Briscoe because I think they knew the situation Small has been in with MTJ.....with that said he better have success with Briscoe or he'll hear it even louder from his critics
I always felt they should've ran the new layout as the route for caution laps to help with time. That way we keep turns 11 and 12 as key passing zones while also having shorter caution periods. As for the amount of fans and visibility of the cars in that section, that's kinda something you'll always have with a long road course with elevation changes, which I'd prefer over a completely flat road course that doesn't race well.
Randall is a solid crew chief and they meshed good early I see no reason why they can't reignite that fire. They need to lose Keith for real😂 I hope this doesn't hurt them more
@easyenetwork2023 I think that's the number 1 thing, he probably hates the Gen 7 car and how stupid young drivers race each other, he actually has standards, but as soon as Sherry died his performance took a massive nosedive.
Yeah, Truex and Small haven't been the best together like Truex and Cole Pearn. Except for 2021 though, they were really good that season and almost won the championship. Ever since the next Gen came in they both haven't done well.
James small isn’t a good crew chief, but MTJ completely mailed it in this season. Didn’t seem interested at all this year, so I understand if Small has some frustrations.
Know for a fact, going back to the Furniture Row Days, Truex never came to the shop. So this doesn’t surprise me at all coming from Small. Small was at FRR as well working for Cole.
I think Burnett and Busch are good. I think the issue with RCR is maybe the feedback on improving cars only come from one car. It seems as though the cars are separate when it comes to to data and setups. Also Kyle was pushing heavily instead of taking what the cars had.
Kyle and his crew chief aren’t the problem. He’s probably the best that they can give Kyle. The crew needs some improvements, maybe the team needs to stop focusing so much on the 3 car and help out the 8. I know that’s not how teams work, but I think they could win more helping Kyle get up front rather than focusing on the bad driver of the team
NASCAR has really blown it with the reconfiguration of COTA. They cut off the wrong part of the track. They eliminated the turn 11 passing zone and shortened the run into 12, possibly ruining that one, too. But they kept the slow infield corners 13, 14, and 15.
Truex just lost his longtime girlfriend, sure they had broken up before her death but only because he didn't want him bogged down with her...as soon as she died his heart was no longer in it, he had an amazing career.
Both of those SHR grabs from RCR are a REALLY bad move IMO. Johnny is the guy who was in charge and responsible, at that time, for the MASSIVE L3 penalty Briscoe got and got hime suspended for 6 races and promptly fired as crew chief. Then, he got moved to part of the vehicle performance group, and SHR has only gotten worse in performance since then. Richard Boswell to the #3 crew chief is also a puzzling move, albeit toa lesser extent than Johnny Klausmeier's move. He has been Chase's crew chief for the last 1 1/2 years, and since he jumped on the pitbox with Chase, it's been a really common trend that the 14 either qualifies and starts the race fast, but quickly falls into obscurity, or is the ugliest, most evil looking car on the track to the point it is undriveable. RCR is clearly trying to make moves for the better, but they only seem to be hiring and promoting people that have a sketchy recent reputation at best. I expect more of the same disfunctional organization from the RCR camp next season if these are the personell moves they are making.
Comparing gen 6 stats to gen 7 stats for drivers like KB and MTJ is pointless the current cup car is not NASCAR is a sports car this hasn’t been nascar since the gen 7
Agreed I HATE the new car! Gen 6 was good 1.5s just suck ass and it was a great short track, road course, unique oval and plate car...NASCAR should've kept Gen 6, dumped all 1.5s to single dates and dumped any they could get rid of and we'd have a much better series in 2024...North Wilkesboro would've put on a really good All-Star race it would've got a points race probably with Gen 6.
James Small ruined Truex's last years. He was definitely a huge part of the reason as to why Truex was not having fun. Horrible at strategy, could not keep up with the track, and would never listen to Martin
But to James' defense. We spent 3 years debating whether or not Truex would retire or not. It's hard to build a team around a driver when you don't even know if that driver will there next season.
@spheredhawk67 Would Martin be that unsure with Cole Pearn? I doubt it, since Cole has chemistry with Martin & the two can understand each other. One of the reasons I believe Briscoe, the driver, is a championship contender while the 19 team, themselves, isn't a championship contender, is Small. He's put Matrin out on scuffs & not told him, then get upset at the driver for being upset with him. Sonoma, Martin ran out of gas coming to the line. Who makes the call on when to come in & how much gas? James Small. Sure, James isn't to fully blame, but like 75-80% of the blame can be put on him. When he barely makes a difference, Martin can win races & titles. When he NEEDS to make that difference, he always comes up short.

Randall got a bad rap this year because of RCR's incompetence. I hope Rowdy and Randall recapture the magic from the first half of 2023.
Martin Truex Jr. is Martin Truex Jr., James Small is no Cole Pearn.
While I don't agree with the comments from James Small, remember...hes Aussie...they can be very blunt...
Randall is a solid crew chief and they meshed good early I see no reason why they can't reignite that fire. They need to lose Keith for real😂 I hope this doesn't hurt them more
MYJ came back for Bass Pro. Not for racing. He was done with racing in 2023
Some of it could have been death of Sherri too. Even though he has a new girlfriend.
Cole Pearn should’ve never retired.
How has there been so much offseason news so fast? Looking forward to the Hayk Motorsports announcement soon too
Jermey bullies is going to be great for rfk.
James small isn’t a good crew chief, but MTJ completely mailed it in this season. Didn’t seem interested at all this year, so I understand if Small has some frustrations.
Wonder how Truex's season would have gone had he still been with Pearn
Just add the national circuit layout too! And nothing wrong with being an F1 fan too!
Hi Eric Estepp I never miss a single episode😊❤
Hey Marcus what do you think about Riley herbst in the cup series 😊

Know for a fact, going back to the Furniture Row Days, Truex never came to the shop. So this doesn’t surprise me at all coming from Small. Small was at FRR as well working for Cole.
James Small Is Awesome
Randell is ok, idk who but we do need a new Crew chief for busch
You have to have 2 good cars. But maybe having Hill there also would help.
NASCAR has really blown it with the reconfiguration of COTA. They cut off the wrong part of the track. They eliminated the turn 11 passing zone and shortened the run into 12, possibly ruining that one, too. But they kept the slow infield corners 13, 14, and 15.
Trying to fix something that isn't broken with COTA.
Small has made these exact comments a few times now. They are not by accident
Truex just lost his longtime girlfriend, sure they had broken up before her death but only because he didn't want him bogged down with her...as soon as she died his heart was no longer in it, he had an amazing career.
I honestly think we'll never hear from MTJ again minus Daytona obviously...
You’ve never given your thoughts on the Amazon Prime and TNT booths. This week feels incomplete without you talking about it.
That’s right I am shocked that didn’t happen already 😊
The 3 team need a better driver.
SVG will definitely dominate the new track
Heck Yeah
Truex was better with Cole
Sometimes the truth hurts
Facts
James Small wishes he was Cole Pearn
Small was a good contributor under Pearn, he just was never able to carry the torch
I would have to agree, however 2025 will tell the tale.
@@kimstmariejones6596Martin Has No Right To Yell At Nobody, That's Not How A Team Works, You Lift Each Other Up When You Down, Martin Sped On Pit Road Twice This Year And Wrecked The Car All By Himself At Darlington,I Never Heard Nobody Yell At Him And Y'all Never Said A Thing,But Somehow He Is Entitled To Yell When James Makes A Mistake Like All Humans Do, Martin Was Just As Much A Contributing Factor To The 19 Teams Performance As Much As James Small Is
23XI is crying about the unfair business practices, but they decided to add another full time team… Make that make sense
Seems strange eh LOL
MTJ certainly hung on years too long and raced for the salary and not wins at the end. No one wants or needs more.
Facts
MTJ moved back to Jersey over 6 months ago. Also, when James took over, MTJ's personal life went through some major changes. Who knows where his head has been at the last 3 or 4 years
The audacity of James Small is insane
Audacity is a good thing
As a logano fan thats a lowblow to say about truex
He will either move forward with Briscoe or continue to well....maybe coach will have to make a call...
James Small is the real problem, the guy is clueless, makes mistakes that costed Truex a few wins at least, and has the audacity to say that, get some self awareness
