    James Gandolfini, Terrence Winter, and other writers and actors were absolutely essential in helping David Chase craft the Sopranos into the phenomenon it was. It is said that Gandolfini and Chase often had long, tense arguments about the direction, characterization and motivation of all characters and storylines. Well boy, is Gandolfini's absent felt in this film. Chase alone could not have given us The Sopranos and he definitely needed help with Many Saints, which had so much potential and talent but story and direction were ridiculously silly.

    It's the rare movie that both disappoints you, yet leaves the viewer wanting more. Should've been a 6-7 episode miniseries. Was so interested in the world that was built; but as you mention, just didn't have a long enough run time to let the plot, characters and dialogue breathe. Also, David Chase was pretty honest that his health was poor and he had other things going on in his life, and delegated a lot of the direction and editing to his underlings. As a result, the piece as a whole definitely didn't feel like his most polished work.

    Sorry I cannot disagree more. Ok Vera Famila is good as the mother but Corey Stale looks like a balding Jewish guy plays as a clown. No they did not have the time to do much of anything but they would have had more time if they did not add in race relations that had no place here.

      The Newark Riots were mentioned a reasonable amount during the series, pretty difficult to feature them without also featuring the clear racial implications of the situation. That being said I agree that there was nothing *forcing* them to set the movie then so I guess it's a fair point. Here's a question - did you prefer Vera to the actress that plays Tony's mother in the series flashbacks?

    Love the Sopranos... but to me The Wire is the greatest show ever made... I do love The Sopranos too though...Breaking Bad is up there...Game of Thrones before they passed the books(even though season 6 had a few of the best episodes of the series - especially the finale)

    I have watched the Sopranos series at least 75 times. It's the greatest thing ever to happen to television. The Many Saints Of Newark was absolute trash. It was like Hanna Barbera decided to make a cartoon about the mafia.

What I love about your work is that it is straight from the heart. I watched many youtube reviews of this movie, but this review was the most accurate imo, and seems as if NOVUM is very on top of Sopranos show and lore. I agreed with the assessment of performances. However, i didnt like the Big Pusssy character. “Hopalong Cassidich” or whatever that he said twice was just completelty non sensical directed to a chatacter he prob doesnt know well. Many lines from this movie were forced into this movie to appease fans, or for failed attempts at quick laughs.

    • @Novum_YT

      Firstly thank you that’s high praise. I think that’s a spot on point about ‘hopalong cassadich’ it’s the same thing with ‘sisters c*nt’ and ‘talking through your hat’. They’d be okay on their own but they’re repeated always one time too many and it just feels forced into catchphrases. Very good point my dude. Thanks for watching!

    It wasn't that there needed to be more movie, it's that the movie needed to cut out the black element and focus on what people actually wanted to see - that being the retro DiMeo crew. If you take Harold out of the movie and reallocate that runtime to Tony Soprano, then the movie works.
    And by the by, it's obvious that not even you care about Harold since you called him "Howard" throughout the whole review.

    • @Novum_YT
      @Novum_YT  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I did realize when I posted but editing it back out would have been a nightmare and I think you're the only person that's noticed so far. I don't think it's evident of me not caring though, this was just my first attempt at getting a video out like the day of digital release so there's more errors than I would like.
      Couldn't agree more about it needing more Tony, but if you remove the (as you put it) 'black element' there's suddenly very little conflict driving the film. For Dickie's assassination to be a surprise there has to be another enemy to bounce off of throughout or we have very little happening. I'd say Howardald's storyline is the weakest element of the movie for sure - but if we remove it entirely we don't have a functional movie.
      Thanks for commenting, my honkey.

      Counterpoint - the self destruction of Dickie and his conflict with, say, Junior - could have provided plenty of conflict. If you need more, Dickie was mentioned to have taken out some crew single-handedly in The Sopranos, so that could be in the movie. The Harold storyline distracted and detracted from the rest of the movie, and added nothing of value in its own right.

      It’s not that, the Harold part isn’t bad because he’s black. First of all this was marketed as a completely different movie so it’s not a surprise people have a problems with what type of movie it is, and secondly don’t write off all the actual critisicm as racism when many people including myself actually thought the Harold parts were shit. In fact I thought it was an interesting idea! But it absolutely sucked!

    • @asleepcorn3391
      @asleepcorn3391 3 роки тому

      Also many people did not like the performances at all. The feel of the movie is way off too, there are amazing flashback scenes that all of us soprano fans love yet they missed any and all of that raw feeling which could’ve genuinely carried the movie. Everything from the sopranos that us fans saw could be used in the prequels were missed. The only callbacks they did were insanely fucking cringe and would’ve been better completely without. Also the tony story was not good at all in my opinion. He acted it well but why didn’t any of the shit Tony said happened as a kid happen. The poker robbery didn’t happen, Artie was barley used when he was his best friend, and I always got the impression that even though Tony had panick attacks he was an average kid. Tony was so weird in this movie I just find it hard to believe nobody mentioned it when he was older, when he had a mother who would mention any and all flaws real or not, existing or non-existing. Also don’t get me started on the plot points of this movie. How does Harold kill a made guy and is not killed RIGHT after. When a made guy was killed in the sopranos that meant shit was going to get serious. It doesn’t matter who’s going to die because it’s going to be somebody. Dickie literally allowed him to live after having a chance to kill him. All the mobsters in this movie are complete pussies. It’s implied in the show that the time they’re existing, that mob boss Tony is living in, is somewhat of an embarrassing end to the business in general, absolutely a shadow of the past, yet these mobsters seem like they’d be the 90s Nj mobs bitch. I could go on for days on how I don’t like this movie. Trust me although there is people who don’t like this movie because there is black people in it this movie has some real problems with fans. Don’t get this narrative going I want to be able to shit on this movie without being called a racist

    • @Novum_YT

      @@asleepcorn3391 Thanks so much for the replies Jacob! There is a lot there I agree with. The decision to let him live during the shotgun shootout was just baffling you're absolutely right. I still can't figure out the motivation there. And yeah overall I agree that the narrative was "shit".
      As for the race thing: 100% you're not racist simply for criticizing this movie and I hope I didn't come across that way in the video! Harold's parts were shit. They made no sense. That's not a racist statement in any way and I encourage you to criticize it as and where you see fit. It's just the people that were mad that there was a black characters storyline in the film and used this as a reason to start crying that The Sopranos had 'gone woke'. I mean the show spends literal hours on academic discussion on the moral and cultural implications of negative stereotyping in the Italian American community and portrays racism as a very bad and very widespread thing within that community so really the show was always 'woker' than the fans want to admit. But simply having a black character isn't evident of that.
      Oh and my guess would be that ripping off Feech's cardgame will likely be the end of the trilogy because that's the point where Tony began seriously moving up to being made.
      Thanks so much for watching dude!

      @@asleepcorn3391 I wasnt referring to you per se. But when people exaggerate and call it a "BLM" movie or say "it's even got a ten minute poetry slam", "half the movie is blacks rioting" None of that is true, the riot had at most fifteen minutes in the whole movie, its based on an actual event in 67 fifty years before BLM, the poetry slam was actually the infamous Last Poets and it was maybe two minutes which was what influenced harold to start his own empire. Like I said before the movie has a lot of flaws some which you mentioned. It should of been a series, two hours was just not enough to get into the depth of the story. If they make a part two, maybe some of it will make more sense
