Funny story, my mother used to hate when I played pokemon colloseum because she hated the idle animations and complained that the characters "needed to stand still" and that they "drank too much caffeine."
You just reminded me of how much I enjoyed gen5's new battle styles! I remember making a Triple Battle Rain team that got 96 streak wins on Battle Maison. Thank you for the nostalgia.
Also gen 6: what if we make strong pokemon even stronger Gen 7: what if we make a move like, really strong Gen 8: what if we make pokemon bigger. Like, more big. And strong.
As much as I love XY, I wish they fixed the animations. I don't know a lot about 3d animation but it's pretty easy to move wings once in a while, right?
Alyssa is an example of the problem of cutting half the pokemon. In one way or another, someone will be affected by the loss of their favorite pokemon.
Jayden C They kinda are. They’re basically lazy, still character models with idle animation. I highly doubt SwSh will still played in a few years compared to older generations like Red/Blue or even Black/White. SwSh is just so incredibly forgettable and mediocre.
@@suned3128 No? The character models aren't all that lazy. I'm not even focusing on gen 8 but more so 6 and especially 7 in this regard as those games didn't feel lazy in comparison. gen 5 really didn't have any better character models. idle animations? Eh...there not all better then the 3d animations. And really a lot of pokemon work better in 3d then in 2d. Honestly I prefer Yellow then red/blue after actually playing yellow.
@@Jdudec367 "gen 5 didnt have better character models" ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Gen 5 added animation to the sprites, a massive leap forward. Before gen 5 pokemon were just single sprites (outside of the getting out of the ball animation). That is literally objectively wrong. Plus the animations added character to the pokemon. Gen 5 has the best animation for pokemon.
These "blowing in the wind without flapping animations" would work if they were actually moving forward, but they're staying in the same spot, and even then birds flap their wings occasionally
I actually think skarmory would work well with its animation but animate the flight to be more "jet-like". Like animate some streams of wind going across his body and wings and even his head to show aerodynamics
@@xyzzy-dv6te They usually do flap every once in a while. That's the flapping animation seen in the video. But the camera in-game loves to move around a lot so you might not catch when these "twitch/oh yeah I should do something while waiting for orders" animations go off. I'd rather more of them at least constantly flap (Swellow) or be on the ground. (Xatu)
@Warney Disner I don't think this was the reaction you were going for, but you made me legitimately wish that LGPE had voice acting. I don't even like voice acting in video games, but I want to hear a professional voice actor's best attempt at saying "Eevee, use Baddy Bad!" without breaking character.
I was at the beach once, and I saw a seagull flying the direction opposite to the wind. When saw it was essentially floating in place, I said, “Hey, that looks like some bird Pokémon’s idle animation!”
What would a Pokemon game look like with effort? The gyms in Galar are all copy pasted. If the games weren't lazy there would be a indoor snowy ice gym with snowboarders flipping around and a water gym where the screen gets wet and a magma filled fire gym with the screen fogs up and you get sweaty.
Who knows how they handle the animations in the game, most likely they don’t use the grounded animations because those are “Pokémon Amie’s/Care’s/Camp’s” and the faux flying animations are “Battle’s”, which is stupid considering there’s a decent many animations that could be used in Battle, not just those ones for those Pokémon.
Even if we were to assume that they were moving, animals that glide in real life need some kind of updraft to stay afloat, and don't simply turn around, they have to sway their body weight in a similar manner to a plane. Neither of which the animation of Wingull has and the overworld. The defenders don't seem to understand that It's not stationary because it's gliding, stationary because Gamefreak didn't want to make a new animation.
You know I kinda wonder why they do this. If they are so afraid of the mobile market then why aren't they competing with it by blowing everyone away with new mechanics, great graphics and lively pokemon. Instead it feels like they're just doing the bare minimum in games these days and removing features
I think that the reason that they never seem to innovate is because this is working. The last Pokemon game sold well, these ones will sell well, and the next ones will sell well, regardless of how much of an improvement they are in the previous formula. The Switch was there golden opportunity to push Pokemon to the limits, but they're so afraid of failure, and or so pathetic, but they kept riding off of nostalgia. Notice that none of the defenders are trying to say that game freak made the right choice in removing the Dex, they all pretty much unanimously agree that it made the games worse, instead they're finding excuses. I seriously wish that we got a company who is passionate about Pokemon to work on the next main series game. But it's not going to happen, so instead look forward to Pokemon Sharpened Sword and Tempered Shield coming 2020 what's the National Dex re-implemented, not because they couldn't do it in Sword and Shield, but because they knew it wouldn't make a dent and wanted to make it the sequel sell better. Either or they're never bring back National Dex cuz they're that tone deaf.
They've hit a high horse and think that a name is all a game needs to net in cash. And while they claim they noted our concerns, their responses and lack-there-of responses beg to differ. That's why we either don't buy the games unless they're used or marked down, or we plan another raid on 9/20 next year. Preferably the former.
It looks like all the flying animations are for the Pokemon when they're soaring or moving forward. Birds flap their wings for vertical motion but typically lock their wings and soar to move forward. And eels don't wiggle around like that unless they're trying to move forward. Why gamefreak thought it was a good idea to give pokemon forward moving animations while stationary, I'll never know
This, he compares a skarmory going up with a skarmory that is gliding in air with wings locked in place. These are two different types of flying used for different purposes. And honestly while i agree in most cases that the animations are shit in new pokemon games, i don't think the collosseum one is actually better. For me it looks janky.
HiroSenpai I agree and this feels like someone trying to hop on the “gamefreak do bad animations” bandwagon too. We’ve already heard everything there needs to be said about this. No one even tries to mention how bad the games get gameplay-wise
@@demifolk8940 I for one disagree. As the point of this video is the quality of the animations. While it is true that all of the animations seem to be made to imitate moving forward, all of them are obviously lazy attempts at simulating flight.
Why would a Skarmory be going forward endlessly? I could understand if it went something like flap wings, glide, flap wings, repeat, but there is literally no way Skarmory would be able to stay airborne as is lmao New one just doesn't make sense imo for the situation
It looks pretty menacing actually. Just imagine this thing floating smoothly through the air, leaping at its' prey. Grounded Eelectross feels clunky and harmless in comparison.
Yeah, I like how it fluidly swims through the air. I love the idea of an aquatic animal swimming with electromagnetism, and it looks far more dynamic than 90% of the 3d models. Finding one in the mystery island cave and seeing this new version was what charmed me to the pokemon in the first place. Before that I always just found it wierd. I mean, it's a supposedly aquatic lamprey, but it's pure electric and only found on land in caves? And it has levitate but its Sprite just has it rearing like a cobra on the ground? I just couldnt get it before
@@kartovalribs1872 with this like these, I am again and again reminded and please that I bought an oculus quest over a switch with my play money that I had extra for awhile
This is just what I assumed looking at skarmory. Somehow it was just levitating because there is no reason a bird should be t posing in flight. EDIT: If it's not moving.
if it flapped its wings it would move vertically, it having its wings spread indicate its gliding, what would make sense for a still standing flying type.
My favourite flying animation is Archeops, his animation captures that he's struggling to fly like the pokedex describes him as not flying well My least favourite is Salamence's. He's one of my favourite pokes and it's really disappointing that a Pokemon who basically willed itself to grow wings just... T-poses in the air...
These animations are all perfect, you just don't understand the aerodynamics here. The pokemon are actually gliding on hot air currents that constantly permeate from Masuda and Omori's mouths and their own rectums. If they flapped their wings, the raw stench of lies and unfinished work would get into their trainer's noses, further ruining the experience.
Not gonna lie, when I saw what the did to Skarmory back in the day I refused to use him because of how stupid they made him look. Stadium 2 Skarmory was the best.
I don’t know about that, flashy effects made the 2D games look pretty good. I haven’t played any 3D Pokémon game, but I’m impressed with how good they made all the visual effects look in the 3D games.
@@josedeleon6961 You're taking a page out of DistantKingdom's book, but I want to argue that effects can be flashy in a bad way, take the SwSh mega charizard fire in v.redd.it/8x0df7d2vw931/DASH_1080 the fire essentially looks like plastic as it's forming up, not to mention it's in this grand "orb of energy gathers before being released into a massive attack" (which isn't so grand when a bunch of moves do it) Compared to that, the chinese mobile game's fire is a breath of fresh air, using the anime-style fire in an effective way that I'd call more satisfying along with the fact that there's way less noise.
TheArQu That’s why GameFreak is so lazy, they know they don’t have to use any effort because people will mindlessly buy anything and most people won’t criticize it whatsoever. Those people with that,”Rhee if you don’t like it don’t buy it” response any time you constructively criticize anything piss me off
@Peek- At -Ch'you Hit the nail right on the head. Right down to them taking content out of their games only to try and sell it back to you at the same price you bought the base game at.
The shit we let Game Freak get away with over the years... But I will admit I prefer their 'swimming' Eelektross over all other forms. THAT one they actually got right.
It confuses me so much that they go with the static, lifeless animations rather than the much more animated and alive animations that they made themselves??
This really confused me too. It seems like a waste of money? Even if it means that they cant handle those graphics, why up them in the first place if you can just have animation that feels more alive
Maybe they tried it out and found it was too much for the 3DS. Well it was made for 3Ds after all, but later they decided to reuse the models but didnt alter the animations.
I recommend looking into video game programming first before jumping to conclusions. You could have over 20 different animations per Pokemon. That times the Pokemon today would become a huge stress on the system.
@@eko2_ You make a very valid point actually, the only way we could get high quality animations is if we can cut out filler and boring Pokemon, like Chatot, Unknowns and the like. Isnt that a funny concept if they cut down Pokemon for higher quality animations? That sounds like such a good idea that will sure, get criticism but will overall improve the game! Pokemon that are obviously iconic like all those wacky Starters and the Pseudo legendaries! Or even the normal legendaries and the cool series Staples like birds or rodents or that stupid early bug type. *Oh wait, oh fuck I forgot! That's what they said they were going to do!*
Xatu was my favourite Pokemon but when I saw how it looked in x and y I hated how they massacred my boy and I just didn’t use it, why is the TOTEM Pokemon flying? Sky battles? Ok I can understand, but normal battles? Nope ur staying still in the air my boy
The Epic Oshawott Honestly, in my opinion the 3ds, even without the bad models they used, they make it look abit derpy to begin with to me and I never liked it
I’ll be honest, I’ve never actually taken note of how shit the animations are until I’ve now been shown better and proper quality animations Thanks Distant Kingdom for helping me see true quality animations!
in hindsight we probably set it aside because a main game has never been on a console, and we accepted the possible limitations of making the game on handheld systems. but when they tell you animation will be a focus of the new game, that make you pay attention to it, and makes you notice more of the flaws. then with people making excuses and game freak's explanations not adding up you get the debate people are having now
I personally loved the BW and BW2 animations as even on Pokemon showdown, I play with old sprites on as their so much more expressive and lively in a way and an example of such would Black Kyurem. I love how his BW2 sprite makes him look so fierce and then the movement when he slams his arms at ground shows the beast is full of rage and power in a way. I enjoy the BW sprites a lot more and that’s why when I play through those games again it’s always a blast!
Fun fact: you can use Gastly and Haunter in the Sky Battles but not Gengar because he hasn't an actual levitating idle animation. So what they did? They replaced his ability with fucking Cursed Body, why are the developer so stupid?
The Xatu one pisses me off especially since its supposed to look like a totem pole when it stands but instead they have it floating in an awkward position which goes against what the design itself was trying to convey.
Let's say incompetence. Since that's how it really seems to be since GF doesn't know how to optimize basic programming for their games and refuse to learn how.
More like incompetence in this case, they DO have the extra needed animations, but they reserved them for that one mode most people barely touch more than once or twice instead of using them where everyone goes every time, the Battles.
Actually I forgive X and Y they were working with new hardware and have to make every model and texture animations maps NPCs move animations all the new content and the new 3D graphics . But after that they keep using the same trash since 2013 a switch game that looks like a 3DS game
The saddest part about this is that the flying and gliding idle animations could have easily been used in tandem to emulate how birds actually behave in the air but of course, between flapping its wings and stiffly gliding GF had to choose the one that defies all laws of gravity as their only idle animation
Hey gamefreak can we have the national dex back in a new game? Just never make this mistake again and we'll be happy. Gamefreak: “Yeah............. *But wouldn’t you rather have Gigamax Sky Battles instead?*”

It makes no sense that Gamefreak wouldn’t hire or poach developers capable of these types of animations knowing they were going to make the jump to a legit console. What a letdown.
Until it has been demonstrated that hiring more animators will yield a great ROI, they aren't changing anything. The sad truth is that the majority of the people who buy Pokemon games, would still buy SwSh even if every Pokemom was borderline T-posing their way through the entire game. It’s my favorite Pokémon game. The animations are just a small part of how amazing it is. I mean can you imagine how amazing it was to play Pokémon Colosseum back then during Gen 3? Even today I’m so impressed playing the game since no Pokémon game, even Sword and Shield, really compares in the battle animations. The story is superb and so is the whole atmosphere of the region. Highly recommend it. I actually sometimes get my Wii out so I can replay it.
Skarmory actually has a second Idle animation, at least in Sun and Moon, where it flaps it's wings in a very interesting way, with the motions suggesting it has three seperate pairs of wings on each sides, suggested by the subtle latency of the red "feathers" rising to meet the steel feather, adding some interesting flare. Perhaps the other gliding Pokemon have these animations, too, I've just never seen them because I was to busy trying to either catch them or defeat them. And it's way more interesting to see airborne Pokémon actually gliding, and I think salamance is 10x as intimidating this way, and I think it's better than them just sitting there. It works with the smaller bird pokemon, doesn't really work with larger ones, especially considering that Pokemon with flight capabilities are probably more effective when they're swooping around, and flying in for the attack, like real birds and insects. Which they didn't used to. Still doesn't explain Electross, though. They could've incorporated that wavy-ness into his animations, while having him floating a bit in his idle. But now he just looks really weird...
Skarmory's always been able to flap the individual parts of its wings individually, though it's not shown much anymore. IIRC the games that it's demonstrated the most is in Gen V and Colosseum/XD: Gale of Darkness.
When I played the gamecube games and revolution I used to think about how great it would be when the main games caught up. Imagine my excitement when a switch version was confirmed......... then they ported a 3DS game and said it was new
I never used to care, but you opened my eyes. Tell all the pokemon I'm sorry for disregarding their animations. That joke aside, I really didn't realise how bad some of these animations are. Heck, before I saw you, even I was able to tell that SwSh's walking pokemon animations were taken DIRECTLY from the unused animations on the 3DS. Here's to hoping gamefreak get the message, and great video. EDIT: Time to redownload Pokedex 3D Pro

What you say they already exist in Amie????? Well.... ummmmmm IM GONNA BUY SWORD AND SHIELD AND ENJOY IT WHILE YOU DONT HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
I'm so happy people are realizing animations in new Pokémon games aren't THAT good. People used to insult me or think bad about me when I said something about the animations, guess they think like me now, too.
Absolutely. They're well done, surely, but yet they lack something just as you said. I really hope Game Freak realizes it, because it really has a great potential, because they're not bad at making animations.
Well on the previous games, they had the titanic task of having a 3D model for every pokemon, on a portable console no less. I think 6th and 7th gen were Allright for what the 3ds was capable of, and I wouldn't lament having less pokemon going forward if they actually did anything new with them. But the state we've seen sword and Shield is unacceptable in my opinion.
Look at how they massacred my boy Eelektross It’s nicely animated in X/Y but it just looks more so awkward rather than cool imo I always forget about Pokédex Pro 3D but they nailed how Eelektross should look in battle imo
Honestly I wouldn't mind it if they took the models from Pokedex 3D Pro instead of the recent main models they use now. Won't ultimately change my choice for buying the game, but I do agree that Gamefreak's current choices for animations are pretty lazy by comparison.
The "animations" of the Pokemon who are flying always bothered the hell out of me. I never thought about how it was because of sky battles, and that really does just make it worse. Unrelated, I've never noticed Tropius had bananas on its chin, and I saw plenty of them in the GBA games.
After seeing that much more superior idle animation from 16 years ago, I actually kinda like him now. If he had that animation now, I'd definitely think he looks cool. I like that the older animations capture their personalities, and I definitely like Xatu's personality haha
I know I'm 7 months late, but when X&Y was released there was an interview somewhere that stated they did this on purpose cus they wanted to keep the "cutesy" style or something along those lines where it wont be as realistic as Battle Revolution. I remember being slightly disappointed but then Greninja.
You should do a video on the sleeping animations from Pokémon-Amie and Refresh. There's some brilliant and expressive animations and those modes, and yet in battles, their eye texture changes to be closed, and their idle animation slows down. If they already had such great sleeping animations, why on Earth would they make the game worse by not using them!?
@@kirara4953 agreed. maybe in the future, if they actually are allowed to spend time on a game for once, they could implement a system like: •pokemon is afflicted with a "sleep" status condition •pokemon still standing but now has an additional animation where it's nodding off, rather than fulling lying down or just slowing the idle. I think that way some life could be brought into the status conditions, without fully compromising how the battle system works, yeah?
@@NightFury26 Yeah, improvements can be made but GameFreak doesn't have enough time/employees. With Zelda the main series and sequels are made by Nintendo, remakes by Grezzo and Spin offs by other companies. With Pokemon main series and sequels are made by GameFreak, remakes are made by GameFreak and Spin offs by others. We get a new region every 3 years, a sequel or third game next year and a remake on the last then new region again. This means GameFreak has to divide their team to two groups (one for main game and sequels and the other for remake) or three groups (one for each game).
Now that I've fully acknowledged that all those Pokemon actually have grounded animations, I'm even more mad about them flying all the time. I didn't even know that Sky Battles were anthing since I've never played X&Y, but now I wish that they never existed.
I mean I do agree with you about the animations, Gamefreak is incompetent. And they've been using practically the same models and animations since 2013. But it's not XY fault. Its gamefreaks fault.
One word: Archeops Look how they massacred my boy One of my favoritegen 5 pokemon visually, but it just looks derpy and stupid flapping about there in gen 6 and on, like I always thought it is capable of flight, but doesn’t fly constantly
not to be That Guy, but even in Archeops' dex entry it says it's barely able of flying well, so the fact it's flapping so wildly is a nod to the fact it can barely stay afloat
Staraptor got the short end of the stick too, it looked menacing and intimidating in the 2d sprites where it was grounded, but when it's flying, they made it look absolutely stupid.
Xatu also had a second pair of closed wings while floating, I think that bit at least is just part of the animation viewer being used. The animation seems to mostly be removing the closed wings and replacing them with a wing effect, which is kinda lazy as heck. The viewer being used just keeps the closed wings around for some reason while doing that animation.
I've said this in other videos about this topic. But once you start to take away stuff that makes Pokemon somewhat unique, it starts to become INCREDIBLY noticeable how much slack they were being given for just reusing assets.

Even if we were to assume that they were moving, animals that glide in real life need some kind of updraft to stay afloat, and don't simply turn around, they have to sway their body weight in a similar manner to a plane.
The Switch was there golden opportunity to push Pokemon to the limits, but they're so afraid of failure, and or so

Preferably the former.
They don't have to. They're playing is safe year in year out and it's been working. They know you'll buy it anyway.

@@demifolk8940 I for one disagree. As the point of this video is the quality of the animations. While it is true that all of the animations seem to be made to imitate moving forward, all of them are obviously lazy attempts at simulating flight.

@@askuser oh , ok
Xd gale of darkness is a good sequel in my opinion to collisuem.
Imagine my excitement when a switch version was confirmed......... then they ported a 3DS game and said it was new
6:35 What the hell, Swellow has wings on top of his wings.
*Holy shit.*

His software was glitching a little at the time. No worries he mentioned that lol
I think those are supposed to be just different coloured feathers. Of course, high quality feathers as GameFreak promised us for sword and shield.
WOOOOOOAAAHH
I never used to care, but you opened my eyes. Tell all the pokemon I'm sorry for disregarding their animations.
That joke aside, I really didn't realise how bad some of these animations are. Heck, before I saw you, even I was able to tell that SwSh's walking pokemon animations were taken DIRECTLY from the unused animations on the 3DS.
Here's to hoping gamefreak get the message, and great video.

Moral of the story: It takes roughly 16 years for a company to get complacent.
The animations haven't been good since the Gameboy. People bitching now is just how the internet is these days.
@Tom The Fish Yeah, that's totally better.
@@granthamlin8126 The Black and White series came out on DS, though.
If I'm being honest, I forgot Tropius existed
Look at how they massacred my boy Eelektross
It’s nicely animated in X/Y but it just looks more so awkward rather than cool imo
I always forget about Pokédex Pro 3D but they nailed how Eelektross should look in battle imo
OJorgeO it looks like a completely different Pokémon now
Eelektross looked MUCH better in Gen 5 than Gen 6 and fowards.
Honestly I wouldn't mind it if they took the models from Pokedex 3D Pro instead of the recent main models they use now.
Won't ultimately change my choice for buying the game, but I do agree that Gamefreak's current choices for animations are pretty lazy by comparison.
Eelektross is my favorite pokemon from gen5 so i felt so angry and disgusted when i saw his new shitty floating animation.
They did my boy so dirty.
The "animations" of the Pokemon who are flying always bothered the hell out of me. I never thought about how it was because of sky battles, and that really does just make it worse.
Unrelated, I've never noticed Tropius had bananas on its chin, and I saw plenty of them in the GBA games.
Xatu's my favorite pokemon and the 3D animation makes him look absolutely stupidly silly, and I'm mad to this day
Definitely my favourite psychic type. Such a cool and creative concept behind it, with a fantastic design to match.
Mystery Dungeon
After seeing that much more superior idle animation from 16 years ago, I actually kinda like him now. If he had that animation now, I'd definitely think he looks cool. I like that the older animations capture their personalities, and I definitely like Xatu's personality haha
Can almost guarantee Xatu is being cut in the dex culling.
@@C_Train74 He is absolutely getting cut.
There's some brilliant and expressive animations and those modes, and yet in battles, their
eye texture changes to be closed, and their idle animation slows down. If they already had such great sleeping animations, why on Earth would they make the game worse by not using them!?
The same reason they cut pokemon for no reason,
Because it wouldn't work with the attacking or damage taking animations
pokemon already close their eyes when they sleep
@@kirara4953 agreed. maybe in the future, if they actually are allowed to spend time on a game for once, they could implement a system like:
•pokemon is afflicted with a "sleep" status condition
•pokemon still standing but now has an additional animation where it's nodding off, rather than fulling lying down or just slowing the idle.

Yeah I avoid using a lot of Pokémon just because of their ugly sprites
not to be That Guy, but even in Archeops' dex entry it says it's barely able of flying well, so the fact it's flapping so wildly is a nod to the fact it can barely stay afloat
@@jackkolby909 And yet it can learn Fly lol
The comment above this one loves archeops lol.
Staraptor got the short end of the stick too, it looked menacing and intimidating in the 2d sprites where it was grounded, but when it's flying, they made it look absolutely stupid.
Wait. . . In the 3DS animation, Swellow has its wings open, but it. . . also has them closed? Does Swellow suddenly have two sets of wings???
@@unknownartpop21 Could they seriously not be bothered to simply animate the wings, so they just cloned horizontally?
Xatu also had a second pair of closed wings while floating, I think that bit at least is just part of the animation viewer being used. The animation seems to mostly be removing the closed wings and replacing them with a wing effect, which is kinda lazy as heck. The viewer being used just keeps the closed wings around for some reason while doing that animation.
I don't think anyone noticed this. That's reaaaally awkward.
@Smooshie Pug That's correct. As much as I'd love to shit more on Game Freak, this is a problem with the model viewer, not the model itself.
