It seems like back then car mfrs and consumers didn’t care much about safety besides Mercedes and Volvo. After my mom got into a car accident in her Camry she insisted we get a Volvo and Mercedes.

They were testing the design of the ribbed rear lamps also to show how they could still be seen with mud and backspray on them, led to the 2nd Gen ribbed rear lamps
It held up damn well considering the speed. And it wasn't a standard S class - it was bullet proof, and these cars are damn heavy, around 7000 to 8000 pounds or 3-4 tons. Additional energy that has to be absorbed. Anyway, Diana would be alive today if she was wearing her seat belt.
Most 90s cars would have been completely toast after an accident like that, the passengers too. The W140 was maybe the safest vehicle available back then.
That was the era that companies still inovated and came with their own solutions and didnt only copy one another...
TheMpamMpam sometimes copying is only solution
@Ross Bourne very true but regardless the reason, innovation and originality suffers because of it
Lol the car industry has been copying each other since it's inception. Get off your pedestal.
What you see now are solutions that survived and worked. How much innovation can you work out in limited space like a car?
3:37 ok that's nice when you hit a pedestrian the headlamps can clean themselves.
It’s the small things that add up
Mercedes until 2000 was the most reliable car in the world .
