Not just female rappers, but when it comes to ALL rappers, there are very few who can flow like Lauryn. Lost Ones flow is top tier. So many songs the way she spits puts most people today to shame.
When Lauryn raps, I can always visualize a smile on her face on certain lines. Soooo much charisma and cockiness but she was VERY VERY VERY good at rapping so it fits perfectly. Her verse on Manifest is still one of the best verses I've heard in all of hip hop music. Miseducation is just a PERFECT album imo. All the tracks are meaningful in their own right. To Zion is a beautiful song (with guitar by Carlos Santana) which was a dedication to her newborn son. Absolutely beautiful, and as a man I believe it gives me some sort of insight on what a mother feels. Lost ones is an absolute banger of a rap track. Ex-factor feels like every single breakup I've ever gone through, with lyrics that still cut me like a knife (Loving you is like a bad wound, and we both end up with scars). Doo Wop was an excellent choice as a radio single, but she really shines in those verses too. Every Ghetto, Every City is a fun track that makes you think about the simple things you loved as a kid, even if you don't share the exact same memories her's remind you of your own. Everything Is Everything is both a great song, but also had one of my favourite music videos of all time. Also, the interludes with the classroom of children talking about their thoughts on what love is/means both bring it all together and gives it a bit more heart and feel.
Before this review even starts I need to say that "Tell him" is one of the greatest album closers ever made. Edit:Harmonies on the miseducation of Lauryn Hill are also legendary.

I adore this album. So glad we got a review on it. Typically when somebody's a rapper, singer, and a songwriter, they're usually okay at rapping but great at singing or okay at singing but really great at rapping and song arrangement. Lauryn, however, is that rare instance of being fantastic at all 3. Her musical skill never overreaches or stretches out thin

That was the year where hip-hop really took over from a sales and artistic standpoint. Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, DMX, Outkast, Big Pun, Mos Def/Talib Kweli, Busta Rhymes, Juvenile etc all had insane years with their releases.
This album is a personal favourite of mine. It stands up to the most intense critical scrutiny, with a brilliant aesthetic and acute lyrics. It just happens to be immensely enjoyable too.

She's so talented but still hasn't released a follow-up album to the Miseducation yet (except for the MTV unplugged performance album).

Her flow on “Zealots” and “Family Business” from the Fugees album is even more impressive.
Listening to the miseducation of lauryn Hill from beginning to end was honestly one of the most beautiful and impactful moments of my life.
