Any reviews, how to videos or information given are just from my own experiences of koi pond keeping and may not be suitable for everyone. I hope you enjoy watching this video Regards Andy
The water board have a lot to answer for!! We've experienced similar I'm concerned It's from stw and unsure what to do
Get some of the seachem prime for emergency just incase you get any spikes but keep doing water tests and monitor it.
@DerbyKoi thanks andy 👍
Not good mate, glad you managed to get on top of it all so quickly… 👏🏼 👍🏼
Hopefully thats the end of it… 🤞🏼
Things are looking better now, and a lot more people are starting to have he same issues so hopefully it doesn't happen again 🤞
I had this when my pond was new. Mark from cuttlebrook said salt at. .75%. I was sceptical but desperate. Added 37kg of salt to 1100gal in 3 hrs and stopped water going in, fish instantly responded and improved in an amazing way.
Hi mate, the salt definitely helped calm them down, and thankfully, things are getting back to normal now 🤞
It’s a good thing you caught it when you did. Looks like you’re on the mend then. Thank you for putting out a video on this specific topic of water quality. A lot of new koi keepers don’t completely understand the affects of nitrite and nitrate on their koi let alone what to do about it. It’s great that you researched it as well and put all the time into it. I use the Prime too when my levels creep up. So thank you again for this video. I’m sure it will be very helpful to a lot of koi keepers, including myself.
Thanks, Susan. I appreciate that, and I knew about the effects it can have, but I never really researched it until now, and hopefully, it will help others who have issues in the future. Andy
Is there an expiration date on the Prime? May be a good idea to keep it in stock as DK said?
There are quite a few research articles online that have tested prime against nitrite. Seachem themselves say they don’t actually have any proof or know how it does actually detoxify nitrite sadly.
I hope things get better, water changes seem to be the only definite way to dilute the problem and salt. But salt only protects the heamoglobin, not the fishes internal organs.
Thankfully the koi seem to be over the worst of it, most of the redness has gone and much more calmer. However the Seachem works it definitely reduced the nitrates and gave me a bit of breathing space to continue water changes and using salt. Thanks for the comment. Andy 👍🏻
If anyone can sort it it’s you. I know you will be all over it. Best of luck Mate . Fingers crossed you see a quick improvement 🤞
Cheers mate things are looking much better now 👍
Sorry for the issues you've had, this video will help so many others that have this problem.
I will share this on our group.
Hope you get it sorted soon mate
Thanks mate I appreciate that 👍
Thanks mate I appreciate that 👍
So glad your in top of this must of been awful to find out it was your water board. Well done to Graham for catching it. See you Sunday 🎉
Cheers mate it's the only explanation for it, and I do have to give Graham the credit for spotting it. See you Sunday mate 👍
Andy mate, I've got similar issues.😬 I will do a video later to let people know what I had to do.🙏Your video has helped me 😊 cheers my friend 😅🐟
Cheers Gary hopefully you got your issues sorted out now. And hopefully we'll see you at the show.
I was unaware that high nitites were that dangerous, thanks for the information. Will save this video for future reference 👍
Thanks mate 👍
When I have this issue,
I reduce the flow off variopump down to 5000lph an turn the uv off, for the good bacteria to build up, to combat the high nitrite levels, it allways works for me.
Thanks, mate. im only running at 6000 and thankfully things are getting back to normal now 🤞
Pleased that things are looking better 🙏🐳
Thanks mate 👍
Glad you've managed to get on top of it Andy, we can't control what the water boards do, so we can only react, and luckily for you, you reatced super quickly 👍🏼👌🏼
Cheers, mate, it's the only explanation I can find for the rise in levels, and as you say, we can't control what they do to the water but luckily things are getting back to normal now 🤞
Prime is a great emergency sticking plaster for ammonia and nitrite spikes. There is a product called Safe, which is essentially Prime in powder form.
Much more economical if treating larger bodies of water.
Great video!
Yeah I use safe, much cheaper
@@dom4955 Served an apprenticeship keeping large aquariums before moving to ponds. Saves you a fortune.
Thanks, I will have a look at that, and every penny helps, especially in this expensive hobby. Andy
I had the same problem last year I stop using pond balls and it all came down to normal leavels .the pond balls went in the bin .
Hi mate, it wasn't the pond balls because my neighbour had the same issue, and he doesn't use them, but whatever caused it, thankfully, it's getting back to normal now.
Hi Andy, fingers crossed for you that things keep getting better with the pond and koi 🤞🤞. Hope you have a great time at the national. Gwen
Hi Gwen, things are getting back to normal now, thankfully. Andy
I hope you get it sorted Andy Microbe lift- Nite-OUT is also good and reduces nitrite quickly
Cheers mate I'll look into that 👍
I wonder if an RO system would have prevented this? Been considering one for a while…
I dont have sufficient knowledge of RO systems to answer that. There are very few hobbiest in the uk that use them
Me neither, that’s why I haven’t took the plunge 😂.
Yes - a reverse osmosis/deionization would remove everything leaving only pure water. You would have to add trace elements back into the water if you’re not just replacing evaporation though.
You've had a busy few days Andy 🙄
I've used that Seachem Prime before in my pond and does good work for 36-48 hours, which gives you time to resolve any water issues.
Hope everything is OK now.
Hi Keith, thankfully, things are getting back to normal now, but it was a stressful week trying to sort it out.
have you tested the tap water?
Yes mate tested it as soon as I found the issue and it was fine.
Andy, have you checked your tap water. We have been having problems for a while. If you checked the water out the tap, you get a good reading, but after a night, it is totally different. It's something that's being put in the water, and there's not saying what. On GKP last week, a person said it was carbon dioxide I think. and they say that they don't provide water for fish. So I don't know where they think we get pond water from . But there you go .keep your chin up, mate .but a great topic, see you Sunday remember job's a goodun 👍
Yes, mate checked the water when I found the issue, and it was fine, but thankfully, things are getting back to normal now 🤞
@@DerbyKoi glad to hear 🙏
Fingers crossed the koi will have no long lasting effects from the high nitrite and nitrate levels. 🤞🏻Sounds like you have things under control again so that's good. Just wondering, did you happen to contact the water people to see what, if anything, they were adding to the water? Might help prevent a similar problem in the future if they plan on doing the same thing again. 👍🏻
Hi ken, I did contact them, and all I got was a generic reply saying everything in the area is fine, so not very helpful, but luckily things are getting back to normal now, and hopefully, no long lasting effects 🤞
The Waterboard should have informed you that they are going to be doing major work to the water mains so that you can organize yourself.
I'm sorry for the issues it has caused you.
I hope that you manage to get it all sorted. 🤙🏼🙂🤙🏼❤️
Things are getting back to normal now, thanks, and all they would say is the water was fine to drink, and they are not supplying water for fish. 👍
You *Might* be better off going with Seachem's Safe, Its the concentrated powdered form of Prime . It does mostly the same thing but does not have the slime coat protectant that Prime tends to have but 250grams of Safe will treat 48,000 litres. It might be worth looking into if your Nitrate levels continue to be high.
Cheers, mate. I will definitely look into that because every penny helps in this expensive hobby. 👍
Hi do you only have a eazy pod for a filter?, I tell thats to small remember your koi are growing every year things don't remain the same.
I have a moving bed, upflow filter and just in the process of upgrading another filter, so four filters in total, my parameters have always been good, except recently which is now back to normal. Thanks for the comment 😊👍🏻
@@DerbyKoi that's good to hear. I recently lost all tambasaba goldfish. To high nitrite. Found out my waterfall got all full of muck. I had some monsters.
Thanks David, im sorry to hear about your goldfish. I have some in my pond thar belonged to my mother and are irreplaceable. Hope everything's ok now 🙏
@DerbyKoi yes I tore out waterfall. And after pressure filter water goes to bio filter with shower media and some mating inside. Weird, my ranchus and oranda survived.
Great educational video, glad you've managed to sort the problem andy. Ive shared this video 👍🏻
Thanks mate 👍
Oh M8 what a nightmare 😱. So frustrating when you get an issue and can’t get to the bottom of the cause Glad you got to it in time. Best of luck moving forward 🤞🏻🫶🏻
Thanks mate things are getting back to normal now, thankfully 👍
0,3% salt will help..
Thanks mate, i did use salt 👍🏻
@@DerbyKoi at 0, 3?
Yes mate 0.3 of salt 👍
@@DerbyKoi you can go up to double that if the kois are very ill.
Yes I've had it up to 0.6 on my grow on tank 👍
Place to see you got things under control good luck
Thanks mate 👍
Hope you get that brown blood issue sorted mate. I saw this video in the week about dropping Nitrate levels? ua-cam.com/video/DqMjWA8-J_M/v-deo.htmlsi=X50NXDxK0Bj5SKyi 🤔🤔
Cheers, mate. I did think about trying that, but as my nitrate was high as well, I didn't want to be putting lots of different things in the pond at the same time and stress them out even more. 👍
