27:26 made me cry more than the ending of Toy Story 3
Hey, do us all a favor and please tell Ryu to continue the series.
I remember when this came out, eating Turtles cereal in my Turtles pajamas playing this Turtles game. Marketing was pretty efficient in 1990
Yup. Same here dude. Had many rage quits til I beat that game. This game and double dragon III were hard to beat.
Turtle bedsheets too
Some of my classmates were reluctant to become friends with me because I was constantly humming the Turtles theme song...
I have at least 100 nes games but this one isn't here. My parents gave it to me for Christmas and I hated it so bad I am pretty sure we smashed it. Shit was too freaking hard. I am about to do that with Tyson's punch out. Tyson is so frustrating
@@dsm091 "It has ceased to be, it is no more." Wasn't that Monty Python? It's funny you say that, I don't think I ever once played Punch out. Boxing didn't interest me.
"We're gonna find another hole and see if we can get lucky with that one" -Story of my life!
You've won the internet dude.
Damn 😂 Same!
Played this literally thousands of times as an 8 year old and never beat it. I finally beat it as an adult. One of the greatest accomplishments of my life. 😂
@@faraazalarakhia4131 use an emulator
@@faraazalarakhia4131 i got it on my phone, there's a good free emulator called john nes that plays nes and snes games. gotta be careful where you download games though, there's only one site i've found that doesn't feel at all shady. mosf sites i've tried, when you click download on a game, it brings up a page saying you've won a prize, and i'm assuming that prize is some nice spyware. i only found one place that never does that and downloads the game every time like it should.
@@faraazalarakhia4131 the site is called vimms . net
it has just about every nes and snes game on it. if you have a ps4 or xbox one controller, you can use it with the john ness emulator.
"Donatello is the only one worth a damn."
He really was though...
@@dgalleg2 And not just in the game. Leo had the whole leadership thing going but Donny could do that in a pinch too. And Raph and Mikey were always utterly useless.
when I was a kid we hated the water level not because it was particularly hard, but because it could easily drain your health and kill your turtles before you get to the next, much more painful stage.
“You can just walk over it” AVGN!!
Swimmer Gainz i was looking for that
This is my new favorite series.
yes! me too! I can't wait to see what all Ryu brings us. XD
why? hes terrible
My biggest memory of this game is also level 3. The water level was hard, but I usually got through it (despite usually taking a ton of damage). Level 3 was just so big and confusing. I only made it past level 3 twice. The first time, I died close to the end of level 4. The second time, I made it all the way to Shredder, but with just 1 turtle with super low health, so I got destroyed lol This is high on my list of games that I need to go back and finally beat.
I revisited this game when I was 16 (back in 1996) and made it to Shredder, but didn’t beat him. Still, I had made it much further than I did when the game came out.
"I can walk over it?!" Great memorable AVGN reference
Conveyor belts? Pick-a-sewer? Are you sure this isn't...?
Yeah, I actually beat this game for the first time as an adult - back in 2007, on the Wii VC. It's beyond ridiculous. Like Zelda 2, except at least all the difficult enemies don't respawn in that game.
I was actually planning on leaving the tip about the respawning pizzas here until I saw you discover it later in the video. The one at the 17:05 mark is one of the easiest / most convenient ones to do so with.
Anyway, nice run, and entertaining video!
Rocky2418 zelda 2 wasn't that bad. Just jump duck stab the whole game. Figured that out as a child. This game though..... never tried it again after a rental.... so bad
Memories of my childhood!!! I use to play those all the time, I would always die at the technodrome level, sometimes getting to shredder could never beat him. I finally beat the game in 2004, after dusting off my NES, have never ever beat it since. Can still remember every detail and where to go and what to do....
I love Ryukahr, and I love the TMNT.
I found this game just about REQUIRES farming of pizzas, even in those sketchy situations.
You know a game is brutal when you feel tense while just watching it. Thanks Ryu!!
"You can just walk over it." - AVGN
This game was a catalyst in shaping me towards my love of hard games, as I'm sure it was with many others. Keep up with this series!
I was at a wedding with my family last night reminiscing about how NOBODY in my family could get out of the 3rd level, we all got stuck on some roof.
Tyler Weston I wanna see him play welcome to the game 2
I always hated the roof levels/baxter
"The first level is no big deal..." Half his turtles are beat all to hell.
26:05 "Gonna find another hole and see if we get lucky with that one" .. Sounds like one of my saturday nights :P
Love the series!! Thank you for your time and efforts to entertain us. Greetings from The Netherlands!
Memory lane Ryu, I like this a lot man thanks! I always thought I just sucked extremely bad at these games but low and behold they are just crazy hard. The lag on nes games is a killer
These old games are far more life like than the new games that come out: You can never win them, everything becomes harder and moves faster until you die.
This was one of the few NES games I had growing up. I couldn't even get to the water level. This game and Ghouls and Ghosts destroyed me. Bless you for powering through this!
"Every other Turtle is completely useless" as Mikey makes the impossible jump lol.
Ryukahr, can you please play Battletoads next week? Thanks, and I love your vids!
I second this and it's sequel.
The turtle game made you think of toads..
Battletoads is stupidly difficult if you try to play through the whole game properly. Check out TheMexicanRunner's speedruns of this game, there's a whole bunch of level skips and glitches etc.
Battletoads will kill your nes btw, if you have to emulate it.
when you find a pizza near the entrance or exit of an area, just go in and out healing all your turtles. it respawns every time you enter
This is the only reason I beat the game. Plus I got tons of that scroll/cannon thing and murdered everything.
Wish 7 year old self knew that
@@natedog3542 Agreed
I had a bad habit of whenever I found a trick like that in a game I'd consider it cheating and not use it SMH
@@twismtwism4792 They made games this hard because of arcade games, meaning they only made the games hard so you would spend more money losing, so I'd say the game developers were the ones being cheaters.
Here are a few suggestions for future games in the series. Great idea btw!
These are all on the NES:
- Rygar (I dare you to beat the final boss first try)
- Snake, Rattle 'n Roll (one of the worst ice stages in a video game EVER)
- Solstice (extremely fun, challenging isometric 3D platform / puzzle game but good god is it hard)
- Ninja Gaiden (fun but SO HARD)
- Ghost's n Goblins (you have to play it to experience how excruciating this game is)
- Bionic Commando (an absolute blast if you can live with the awkward control scheme. Still hard though)
Growing up in the 80's-90's G.I Joe's and ninja turtles were my toys... This game pissed me off to no end.
26:05 LMAO best line ever!!!
"It's a dinosaur!".....serioisly???
That's a giant Mouser dude, lol.
Trendkiller when I was a kid I thought it was a dinousaur lol. When I grew up I finally realized it was a mouser lol.
@@OnTheRide1 1990 @ 9 years old it was clearly a mouser & not a dinosaur.
🙄 I was fresh out of the womb and I knew it was a mouser
@@scitizenkane1 LMAO!!!
I'm in a shitty place right now and really needed some Ryu content, figured I'd finally start this series and I am not disappointed! I actually count this as my favorite NES Turtles game! The van, 2D sidescrolling, sound effects, music etc... I just prefer it over the beat 'm up stuff. And that Technodrome, hot damn!
GAME GENIE FTW
@23:00 That is a giant mouser. Mother of all the little mousers you've been fighting this whole time.
When he got ninja stars in place of scrolls at 13:55 I almost choked on my sandwich. Ryu is not ready for this game.
zombiemouse for me it was like that Mr. Crabs meme when I saw that lol. Those dang things are so OP! Specially at the Technodrome.
you saw that too? Glad I wasn't the only one.
"It's a dinosaur"
No, it's a bigger version of the Mousers.
"Wait, you can just walk over it???.....you can just walk over it! Cowabunga? Cowa-piece-of-fuckin-dogshit!!!!!!"
Oh man i feel for you Ryukahr sir. I have enjoyed your Super Mario Maker playthroughs so much because i absolutely suck at Mario, but i can consistently playthrough this game without losing a turtle and 0 continue's :'D
Excellent! One of my favorite games for the NES. It's good to see there's a youtuber that enjoys this kind of retro games. I am waiting for Battletoads. :)
Greetings from Mexico!!
Bro the amount of memories it just came back in the first minute of watching this is astounding. Thank you.
It was actually within 25 seconds 😭
Where your memory fogged up, so did mine, I don’t believe I ever passed that stage, as well.
the nostalgia...i feel old now lol
Jazzi b lol
You should because it became old when the soviet union was a thing.
I know right... if you're like me and are old enough now to have seen the creation of this game (or was old enough to play it when it came out) it will make us feel old FOR SURE (mid 30's).
Nice tits.
I thought I never made it past the water level as a kid, but those fire guys looked familiar, so maybe I beat it a few times. But I certainly never made it to save splinter, fly a blimp, or find a technodrone.
Thank you for showing me more of this game than I'd ever thought I'd see.
Brought back some painful childhood memories with this one!! I was in the same boat as you, never beat stage 3, it was so damn big, I never did figure out where you’re supposed to go!
This game actually this series brings back a lot of memories playing these games growing up. I do remember beating this game when I was younger but it did take me forever. I remember the van part took me hours to figure out!
Love this game!
Santa brought it me, one Christmas, and I never stopped playing.
I played it the hard way, I was obsessed with Raphael so played with him as much as I could, and I never realized that you could win easy by stocking the “moon power up”(as we called it).
I got to the corridor before shredder but could never get past it due to being pretty young and trying to rush through.
Man I remember spending hours trying to beat this game, until i found a sure way every time. In the 3rd stage there are these extra weapons, not sure what they're called, but they would destroy everything. I loaded up all the turtles with them and used them to carry me to the end of the game all the time. Without them, the game was stupid hard, and unbeatable for me.
Called scrolls
that jump gave me ptsd flashbacks from when I was a kid.
Geez, I was 100% sure you would barely pass the water section, but you owned that game so hard all along. You're amazing.
OMG THE NOSTALGIA. I remember playing this game so much.
Daaaamn. This game was my jam back in the day on NES. The bombs underwater wrecked me for quite some time!
Love this video Ryukahr! So much nostalgia watching this video. I hope to see you play this game again and beat it so we can all see the ending!
That AVGN reference, nice little touch! "You can just walk over it?"
This is one of the bains of my life. As a kid, got as far as the level past the fight with the fake turtle. As an adult, only slightly further. Out of curiosity I save stated later just to see what the levels were like and, seriously, this game is much longer than expected and hard as hell. Who ever completes this old skool-no saves, has got my undying respect.
my complete childhood. i made it just past the bomb defusing stage and i never knew the path to finding splinter. good nostalgia for sure.
LOVE THIS SERIES SO UNIQUE PLS CONTINUE
I'm loving this series Ryu! Keep it up!
Starting to really like this series, seeing you play the poopy i played as a youngster and games that AVGN reviewed way back in his first episodes
Kind of a double nostalgia feeling, keep it up!
Leonardo speciality:
No matter what, he dies
Raphael speciality:
Always appears tied up
Miguel speciality:
Where is he?
Donnatelo speciality:
The real hero
Oh man... Brings back great memories!
Just gonna find another hole and see if we get lucky with that one." -Ryukahr 2018
She said that
Love this series dude!
Donatello is the BEST. There is that clipping glitch where if you hit hard into the ground the staff will Pop down from the top of the screen! His staff is easier for hitting and dodging at a distance
I actually loved the underwater segment and when you save your dead turtles (they’re usually tied up someplace )
I can vouch for this game being extraordinarily hard! :P
I like these new series, i hope to see you continue :)
Nice another classic game I played as a kid. My eyes will be on the look out for the other 4 hard games I remeber. Ghosts n Goblins, Battletoads, Friday the 13th, and Mike tysons punch out.
Loving this series idea!
That mid-air collide with a bad guy slow motion fall back and drop into the sewer water bullshit feeling.
The old school famous trick for refilling your health. is entering and exiting the pizza room repeatedly to gain health.
Same trick works for all weapons and rockets
This is a great series man! Keep 'em coming, please!!
Amazing series, Ryu! Loved it! This game is very special to me, as it was the first video game i ever owned. As a kid (6 years old) I was able to beat this, so im sure you will be able to as well.
Love the new series, Ryu. Also, really enjoyed watching the SMM race at Calithon.
This was hilarious. Thanks for feeling the pain of TMNT!
I totally remember this game from my childhood. Never had a NES mind you. Must have played it on my Spectrum 48k.
This game gave me fucking fits as a kid. Thanks for dredging up memories of pure rage.😆
It hurt at the end of the first level when you said that was the easy part...that was the only part I had ever fully completed when I was playing this game as a child. You've got great skill Ryukahr; otherwise I have none.
Back then, that was our video games. We dealt with stuff like this, Ninja Gaidin and Battle Toads through practice and memorization. No check points. No autosaves. No saving anywhere you like. And usually, no infinite continues.
You "got gud" or owned a 50 dollar paperweight you forgot about.
This guy? Bebop and Rocksteady! Love seeing the old games.
Ryu there was this lion king game I used to play back in the day that was impossible to beat; even I couldn’t beat it as an adult and I think it would be right up your alley for this new series. I hope you try it yourself and keep up the good vids!
I loved Lion king as a kid, had it for dos. I always found it a beautiful game, and fair, even though it wasn't easy.
Love love love the nostalgia.
Man, I love old NES games. So great.
I love this series!
HALARIOUS.... LOVE THE RETRO STYLE GAMEPLAY. IM A 80s baby and this.. is truly one of the hardest games ever played. along with mike tyson, battletoads and burgertime
This was one of the games my friend got when he got his nintendo. We were 7 at the time. We didn't know it would go down as a notoriously hard game. To us it was just a game we couldn't beat.
Awesome series so far
Classic, The turtles can swim in open water, but not during platforming stages. LOL
Yeah as a kid it was always - half of runs end at water stage - of the half that get past, all end somewhere in stage 3. I believe I saw the mecha turtle boss of stage 3 a few times, but only when the older kid down the street came over and got to it. We must have never beat that boss, since I have no kid memory of level 4 and beyond. This game was definitely always in the "Fun but are you really in the mood for impossible?" pile of games, along with Battletoads.
You're amazing. I was certain that I had rescued Splinter before until I saw what came after and had 0% recollection.
26:04 hmmmmmm drunk Friday night? you dog RYU
I never had a problem with the underwater stage either. like you, Stage 3 is what always gave me fits.
I can remember being in 7th grade, me a my friends playing this, bringing Polaroid pictures to prove how far we got till one day we all finally defeated it, good times
man the memories
I remember the water level in this game is so ridiculous, there's a timer or something that made me only beat that level once i guess
6:32 when you press pause in the water stage, April will tell you how many bombs you have left
I played this game as a kid. Made it to Shredder once. He won.
I remembered reaching Shredder with 4 barely alive turtles and never had the heart to do it again after I got beat. The third level you have to get lots of missiles but also fill your turtles with 99 energy arcs that can destroy everything on your screen. But you will always end up losing those arcs by jumping on a star.
This is such a great series, Ryu!
Don is the best character. His staff has a longer reach than all the other turtle weapons
Keep up the great content. Much respect and greetings from the Netherlands.
Many of these old games I beat as I child. I can't remember that 6-8 year old me struggled with them. Metroid, Zelda, TMNT, Kid Icarus, Life Force, Punch-Out to name a few hard games. But today...
I remember playing this game. Memories... and many, any tears
I always died at those jet pack bastards right before Shredder. Also, I’m surprised it took you so long to realize you could farm pizzas 😂
Brings back a lot of painful memories of Child Me playing this game for hours in vain. I could get past the swimming section, but I always got lost with the barricades and bombs. I never did beat it back then, and I'm not sure I even wanna try it now... If you can't do it, I certainly stand no chance. lol (Also, the "dinosaur" boss was a giant Mouser, I believe - a big one of the little ones he barfed out.)
Each turtle has their own strengths and weaknesses that you were pretty much ignoring. Leonardo is good for clearing large groups of 1 hit things because his blade sweeps and is longer than Michelangelo and Raphael. Donatello and Michelangelo have slower attack speed. Raphael and Leonardo have faster attack speed. Raphael has the worst range, but the speed and damage are decent. Donatello is basically for bosses.
