    Great comparison Colin, its what I would expect. In most cases a beam should out do a wire however i did do some experiments some years ago with a friend in Leicester who had a field and used wire verticals. The beam won but the margins were smaller. His noise floor was also very low. Doesn’t matter about apples for apples comparisons, these are the tests that matter for the individual within their own QTH boundary. If you can achieve that low angle of radiation with a vertical you can get good results but i don’t see it beating a beam. Happy New Year, Regards Mike

      Your spot on Mike, everyone's milage will be different so its preferential to experiment yourself. The results are not always what you think they will be. Happy new year 🎉

    More than a bit late noticing the video, but that was decidedly interesting. It really is a pretty significant difference. In the heat of battle for a difficult QSO, the Moxon is going to wipe the floor with the OCFD in practice.
    Now, a vertical with a reflector though. That’s quite an easy thing to set up and would be quite interesting to see back to back.

    • @MM0OPXFieldRadio
      @MM0OPXFieldRadio  6 місяців тому +1

      I agree on the difference. For the higher bands I find the Moxon easy and it doesn't need much of a mast. You can turn that easy vs parasitic verticals. I will be getting back to phased verticals soon.

    A well paced comparison Colin, too many people post comparison videos where it is difficult to keep up with them switching rapidly. As for noise in general, have a look for GM3SEK "Clean up your shack". I made a few of his mains filters with integral common mode choking and the results were remarkable. But as the doctor would say "use as directed". 73

    • @MM0OPXFieldRadio
      @MM0OPXFieldRadio  7 місяців тому +3

      Beleive it it not I built the mains filter and its fitted here, PC and Radio into it. The PC's PSU is just so dirty. They have acknowledged this, just trying to agree a suitable replacement. I wish I had a twin RX radio for simultaneous comparison but the 590 does a fine job for what it is.

      @@MM0OPXFieldRadio hope you get the PC noise issue resolved, it can take a lot of the fun out of the hobby. I have a few rigs with diversity receive, it really is a game-changer but understandably it may not be an option right now. Your Moxon does appear to work well, quite impressive. I have fairly limited space and it is a challenge to get the aerials for every job.

    The Moxon wins hands down on both RX and TX. With the gain on the Moxon your ERP has to be approaching 2KW. The ERP on the OCF antenna is going to be less than the power you are putting in with coax and balun losses plus the relatively low or no gain present with an OCF even on 10M. Even though it's technically 2 wave lengths, your not getting any gain from that unless it's at least that many wave lengths above ground. Achieving gain on an antenna is important in amateur radio communications where you are competing with a lot of other stations in Europe and North America running a KW plus plus plus. Great comparison video. I really want to build this 2 element Moxon and stick it up on the peak of my house roof at about 10 meters. A cheap simple TV antenna rotator would handle it no problem. At a wave length above ground, it has to be in the neighborhood of 5 to 7DB of gain. Cheers to the station manager for keeping you in line with planting antennas in the garden :)

    • @MM0OPXFieldRadio
      @MM0OPXFieldRadio  7 місяців тому

      Great comments 👌. When I was testing the 5/8 vertical, took me a few calls in the pileup but the Moxon it was first time every time. Thats the ERP your talking about, makes all the difference. I've had one of those TV rotators and yeah more than beefy enough.

      Not sure how you get 2KW Erp....moxon maximum 5 Db forward gain...same as Hexbeam....
      I doubt it's even 1 Kw but still useful gain.

    I have found many people getting hung up on Antenna Modeling dealing with radiation patterns. Keep in mind, it's an idea of what your pattern may look like. It isn't set in stone, and it isn't absolute. It has been my experience those peaks and nulls are far more dramatic in graphs due to hard edges going from one point to another. There is no smoothing of the edges, and can really make patters look worse than they are.

    • @MM0OPXFieldRadio
      @MM0OPXFieldRadio  7 місяців тому +1

      Yes I agree, real world testing is always preferential. At least this was I know for sure.

      That my opinion anyway. I had an Italian station stronger on the back of the moxon over the OCFD. Thats some null!

  • @radiotests
    @radiotests 7 місяців тому +1

    I replayed the antenna switch and watched the S meter. 3db is what I saw. The side and rear rejection is also better with the Moxon. I'm going to use an OCFD for my general band and hope to get some help from local hams raising a 10m Moxon with 2m and 70cm on the same mitary mast. It will have the "armstrong" rotator. 😂

    • @MM0OPXFieldRadio
      @MM0OPXFieldRadio  7 місяців тому

      So on the Kenwood, 1 S unit is 6db, on my Icoms its more like 3db ber s point. On The stronger signals S7+ the drop was 2 S units so thats minimum 12db. I didnt include all the clips or the video would have been so much longer. The OCFD is still a very good all band antenna, no regrets. Good luck when you get your general 👍

    Hi.... I need your help . Seems like we have same radios . I have same noise level with my vertical sirio 827. You think using a similar moxon antenna or EFHW could be better ? But I am not for the performance tho ....

    • @MM0OPXFieldRadio
      @MM0OPXFieldRadio  6 місяців тому

      So its not just as simple as that. Your noise coild be coming from anywhere. Your antenna is very good for 10m. Turn off your mains electricity and run your radio of a battery and see if the noise is still there. If it is then you are not causing it. Its unlikely of of your suggested antennas will have less noise.

    Your new computer noise issue could be a result of the cpu frequency/ multiplier. Is your cpu speed fixed or variable. Also switch on the computer then remove connections for monitor, keyboard mouse etc to see if noise is generated withe the case or the connected cables. Cheers GM0EEH Jim
