Welcome to the VoicePlay rabbit hole. The hardest thing when you first start going through their catalogue is the fact that they have historically been a five-member group, but they've had many changes in personnel, particularly in the past four years. The core group is now 1) Geoff (who you obviously know), 2) Eli (pronounced like 'Ellie', it's short for Eliezar), the bald tenor who was seated in the center, 3) Cesar, to Eli's right, didn't get to hear much of his solo voice in this, but he covers baritone through tenor range and has such emotion in his voice, and 4) Layne, beatboxer, who occasionally also sings baritone and, as you saw, plays a mean violin (hence his nickname 'VioLayne". The featured performer, or guest, in this video was J None, seated between Geoff and Eli. He was their baritone before leaving to join the US Navy a few years back, but has been coming back more and more frequently as a guest, and lots of VoicePlay fans are hoping that he will rejoin the group when his naval service is completed. Anyway, you'll see lots of 'featured' players and in older videos you will see Tony (their baritone before J None) and Earl, a husky fellow with an incredibly high tenor voice as part of the group. Also, Geoff didn't start growing out his hair until a few years back, so you may not recognize him with short hair at first.

With VoicePlay it's easy to forget that it's a capella. Their arrangements are so full and complex. And whatever genre they are covering they always give it all they've got.

Great reaction! You recognize Geoff to the left, member of the group from the beginning 1997. Next to him is JNone, a former member, 2018-2021, but at the moment serving in the navy band, and he comes to sing with the boys now and then. The man in the middle is Eli (Ellie) who has been in the group since 2010. Besides him, Cesar who came to the group when JNone left in 2021 and last, but not least is Layne, a member from 1997. You keep digging. There is a lot to choose from.

Yes, please check out more. They are the best acapella group out there today in my opinion. They really do suck you in 😅

My top two Voiceplay are #1 Valhalla Calling. I listen to it every other night for a few hours on "Repeat."
#2 Hoist The Colors. I actually sleep to this one, so last year, according to Spotify, I listened to it over 43,500 times. No joke. I love it, it soothes me. Beyond that, it gets harder to rank them. Nothing Else Matters is definitely in my top 5, though. Who says you can't do Metallica acapella!

VoicePlay is like no other group! They can't be put in a box in regards to music genre, they sing it all. They have all the elements needed for superb entertainment.

Loved your reaction! EVERYTHING they do is amazing - because they're that good - but also because they see each project as an art piece and won't release it until it is. Creep is an unexpected stunner - great song, but their spin is fabulous. What do you do with a Drunken Sailor is pure comedy - but also gorgeous music from an old ditty that isn't known for it's beauty. When you do Halo - be sure to listen to the end. You won't want to miss what they have to say, and you'll also get a strong picture of who these guys are. They just released Black Hole Sun a few hours ago, and it's another jaw dropper.

Back nearly 3 yrs ago, I was watching UA-cam news and this little box came up - Geoff Castellucci doing Monster Mash. I found out that he also belonged to VoicePlay and I've been down that rabbit hole since then. So many great songs - so much variety. Glad to have you! You have just heard Layne (VioLayne) do that violin solo at Geoff's request. It was only the second time Layne has done that since 1997. He and J None both had their violins when they did Warriors (Imagine Dragons) the first of the post-apocalyptic trilogy, followed by Dream On (Aerosmith), then by Seven Nation Army (White Stripes). Valhalla Calling (Miracle of Sound) is an epic sound. If you are into Gaming - try Dragonborn Comes Skyrim, Halo, Sleeping in the Cold Below, Geoff solo - Unshaken.

@@LythandieLive as a gamer myself, I second what was said above, and would also add their cover of Still Alive from the game Portal, as well as their ACA Top 10 Video Game music video for a really fun older video (old enough to be their original lineup & Geoff has really short hair lol)
Anyway, welcome to the absolutely chaotic, goofy, and wonderfully whacky rabbit hole that is VoicePlay & Geoff Castellucci! You're gonna LOVE it down here, be prepared to make yourself at home because this is one rabbit hole you'll never want to get out of :)
If you'd like an amazing, purely vocal (no beatboxing) performance that'll pluck at your heartstrings, you should react to I Can't Make You Love Me... it's one of VoicePlay's most beautiful covers & is a great example of how they're not only insanely talented singers, but they're incredible performers as well. They pour their hearts and souls into every cover they do, and it SHOWS in the quality of their work (which is almost 100% done by VoicePlay/Geoff themselves... from doing the arrangements, to costumes, lighting, set design, filming, editing the video, and doing the initial audio mix as well before sending it off to Ed Boyer for the final mix)

I love instrumental music (give me Gary Clark Jr. or Brian Mays letting rip, I’m in heaven), but there’s something about acapella for me.

@@LythandieLive Gary Clark Jr and Brian Mays are both guitarists. Gary has his own act so you can find him by name (check out the crossroads Music Festival )Bright Lights Big City) concert. Brian is the guitarist for Queen. Anything you check out will be awesome, but their Live Aid concert is still considered the best rock performance in history. Well worth the 20 minutes.
But yeah, by more like this, I meant more Voiceplay reactions like this!!

VoicePlay is one of the 3 biggest a cappella groups on UA-cam; the other two are Home Free and Pentatonix. All are 5-member groups, although VoicePlay is currently down 1 permanent member; one of Home Free's long time permanent members has announced that he will be leaving in the fairly near future. Of the three, Pentatonix is the only one with a permanent female member; Home Free is all-male, and VoicePlay has been using featured artists for a few years to make up for their lack of a permanent member, and often uses female guests depending on the song they are covering.
All three groups were also contestants on the NBC TV a cappella competition show The Sing Off in the early 2010s. Pentatonix competed and won season 3 in 2011; Home Free and VoicePlay competed in season 4 in 2013, and Home Free won the season.
Recommendations for VoicePlay: My Mother Told Me and Valhalla Calling (their Viking duo); Warriors, Dream On, and Seven Nation Army (their post-apocalypse trio); Halo theme, Enemy, The Dragonborn Comes, Sleeping In the Cold Below (just some of their video game music covers); Little Mermaid and Moana medleys (a couple of their many Disney medleys).

welcome to the voiceplay rabbit hole and acapella in general. the 2 other heavy hitters is pentatonix and home free. the bass gang is finally starting to get the recognition it deserves. hallelujah, official music video, is where most people start with pentatonix {ptx} and man of constant sorrow with home free. for the bass gang, i think their latest video is if i had a heart from vikings. all groups have very loyal, very passionate and very knowledgeable fans. where their group(s) go the fans will follow and you'll see your subs go up. i know several successful channels built on these groups.

Has anyone mentioned to look in the description box for each video, too? It will tell you which one did the arrangement (usually Geoff or Layne), who did lighting (usually Eli), etc. Geoff’s wife, Kathy, is their Production Manager. In the video for Creep, Cesar’s mirror is even credited in the description box. ☺️

Aren't they AMAZING in this video? Here's the "rules." I'm copying so if I'm being redundant, that's why.
Rules for Voiceplay! (And also some info on them.) I just came up with them on my own, but after years of being a Voiceplaya, I've found they're necessary for optimal Voiceplay (and to a degree, Home Free and Geoff as well) listening. If you've already got some of them down, know I'm just posting the list, not criticizing your reactor skills! The rules:
#1) VERY important! ALWAYS watch to the very end of the video, or at least a ways into the patrons scrolling. Often times it may LOOK like the video has ended, but there's an outro. Also, watching to the end lets you see their awesome cover art, and listen to their music a bit longer!
#2) Always leave the closed captions on. Geoff's wife Kathy (who helps with their videos, she also appears in some, such an amazing woman!) has hearing loss, so sometimes there will be little hidden gems in the CC.
#3) If you pause a video to speak, rewind it five-ten seconds before you start it again, to make sure you don't miss anything. #4) Don't look away from the screen, or close your eyes for more than a second, because, again, you might miss a visual gag or clever moment. Their videos are loaded with them.
#5) Don't go into their videos with expectations on what the song will be like, i.e., that it will be the same as the original. These guys put their own spin on things. The only thing to expect, generally, is to be blown away by their sheer talent.
#6) Unless you have a REALLY great speaker system with stereo sound, ALWAYS wear good headphones/earbuds with Voiceplay and Geoff. They do amazing little tricks you can only pick up with those hearing devices. Plus, some of Geoff's notes are so low you practically can't hear them without headphones
Oh, and FYI, Voiceplay is: (Left to right.)
Geoff Castellucci. (Said Jeff Cas-teh-lou-chee) He's the bass, with long hair. He has a solo channel of low bass covers, well worth checking out! His lowest note, currently, is a B0. You can hear it in Voiceplay's "Valhalla Calling." You almost feel it more than you hear it.
    J. None. Currently on reverse leave, he is away from the group singing for the Navy, but frequently does videos with VP when he can.
Eli Jacobsen (pronounced El-ee, NOT E-lie!) Tenor rock god.
Cesar De La Rosa, their newest member. He brings the feels to every performance! And he flirts with the camera, and it flirts right back!
Layne Stein, their beatboxer. Sometimes he sings, and it's always a treat to hear his voice. He's also known as The Carrot Lord and VioLayne.
Glad to see you were blown away by them! As we all were, even those of us who have been their fans for years! This is my favorite Voiceplay line-up too, with Cesar and J. None. There have been different line-ups through the years, so don't be surprised if the core members' faces change as you go back farther in time. With J. None on a sabbatical of sorts (the Naval Choir asked him to sing with them), they have different guests for each song. But fear not, because they always find the PERFECT guest for each song! I could tell you all sorts of facts and opinions about each member, but I'll let you discover them on your own! Enjoy! I know we will watching you!

    Left to right....
    Geoff Castellucci - bass, arrangements.
J None - guest, baritone, in US Navy Choir.
Eli (like jelly) Jacobson - tenor, rock tenor, lighting, arrangements.
Cesar De La - baritone, tenor.
Layne Stein - beatboxer, baritone, arrangements, co-owner of Pattycake Productions.
Geoff arranged this one. Usually Geoff and Layne switch each month.
Every now and then Eli does one instead. Black Hole Sum, Creep and Eleanor Rigby so far.

I love Pentatonix and Home Free, the other two acapella powerhouses. But nobody comes close to the amount of expertise, vocal beauty, and visual excellence that Voiceplay does.
I'd suggest since you like Geoff that much (everyone does :) ), next check out their cover of "Valhalla Calling". They also do a great "Queen in 5 Minutes": and "Boy Bands in 5 Minutes" and "Little Mermaid Medley" and their triple 'apocalyptic' covers of "Warriors", "Seven Nation Army", and "Dream On" are unparalleled in my opinion.
And then, for a not-the-last-but-awesome version once again of Geoff's bass, check out their "Dragonborn Comes: Skyrim":.
