You Americans are getting absolutely decimated with rent lol. My mortgage on a large, detached three bedroom house with large garden in a capital city here in the UK is the equivalent to $400 a month, and it's already 3/4 paid off.

Why are you comparing a small city in the UK to NYC? Real estate is based on location, first. Obviously your rent is going to be a fraction of the apartments here, they don't come with a Manhattan view. You could also get a 10,000 square foot palace in rural India for your mortgage, but who wants to live there? Also, the US is the richest economy on earth by GDP, so salaries are much higher here, especially in NY. So you can't compare your UK salary against what she is paying for rent. You can make 30-150% your salary in the US for the same job.

I’m worried the agents are scamming me. I was charged $180 for application fee and another charged me $150 for application fee. I’m I being scammed?? I haven’t received a viewing date yet.
You never have to pay before seeing a place
$20 is the most they can charge for the application. Please be cautious.
