Inspired by Hispanic Heritage month, I was reflecting on the tremendous impact of the Latino community on American Catholicism. The only problem was that I knew next to nothing about the subject. So, I did what I usually do in such a situation: find the smartest person writing on the subject and ask them lots of questions. On today's show, I am joined by Dr. Timothy Matovina, Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, who has over 150 scholarly publications and specializes in Latino Catholicism. In this interview we discuss everything from questions of assimilation to history, the future of the Catholic Church and much more. Be sure to stick around until the end for a moving discussion of Our Lady of Guadalupe. You won't want to miss it.

    About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a UA-cam channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.
    About the host:
Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 22 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. On any given day you can find me with my nose in a book or a guitar in my hands. Want to get to know me more? Follow me and say hi on Instagram at: @austin.suggs

Austin you should ask Dr. Motavina about the Cristero war? It’s one of many stories in Catholic history where the oppressed stood up to their oppressors. Many Mexican Catholics have a devout sense of pride . When remembering our fallen Brothers and Sisters that gave their lives during that war to be able to worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his church.

My only criticism of the Dr’s arguments is that he called the Spanish territories in America, colonies. They just were not. They had the same laws as the so called metropolis, and in instances the life expectancy in America was higher and more prosperous there. There was no taxation without representation, as it happened with the USA. The Hispanic Monarchy was the first to deal with human rights, the first global empire and it’s just sad when they compare it to England and France, when they were not on the same level. I could go on and on for hours explaining this but I am glad that Austin made a move into exploring the version of the USA that is not Wasp, but just as real and true.

Much appreciated, Austin! Thank you so much! Being from one of the most ethnic diverse countries in the world and having received massive immigrants throughout the history, just like the USA, it was a pleasure to hear our American brothers searching deeper for a complete historiography of Christianity in the midst of so much sociological tension one can feel there.
On the last part of the video. Our Lady of Guadalupe, albeit important, is not a very widespread devotion in Brazil. Because we weren’t colonized by Spain but Portugal (many don’t know it), where Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is the protector of their people arguably since its birth (in the 12th century) and officially the country’s patroness since the 1600s, that form of devotion played a part in the Portuguese colonies. Our Lady of the Conception “Aparecida” (“that appeared”) is the name of the patroness of Brazil. Curiously, the name is not due to an apparition but to an actual finding of a lost statue of Our Lady, in 1717, by three poor fishermen and a miraculous catch after that. And as it would be expected, the image of Our Lady of (the Immaculate Conception) Aparecida has a crown with twelve stars and shows her pregnant, the highlighted detail: it shows the Virgin Mary not only as Queen but as the purest vessel for Our Lord to enter this messy world.
For a Latin American, as we are kind of used to a wretched world, Christianity makes much less sense without the Most Blessed Virgin, who is the prototype of the Church Triumphant (the church of the saved who achieved glorification) - and people can fairly understand it without a theological degree, and just then make sense on what she was chanting about in the beautiful “Magnificat” (Lk 1, 46-55). The mystery of the Church is palatable, I guess, if we recognize Mary as the inter-testamentary connection bridge for Israel and the Church: when suffering Israel (the starting point) and the Church in glory (the resulting point) are seen together in a true line of biblical continuity. As a friend says, the messier the reality around (rectius: the more concrete our humble recognition of its undeniable messiness), the more sense one can make of Marian devotions in light of the mystery of Christ, Our Savior and Redeemer.
    God bless!

I'd venture to say it is incredibly important; from my review, more than half of the world's practicing Roman Catholics are in the Americas. No small accident that for the first time ever, the most recent Pope was selected from the new world - Pope Francis (birth name Jorge Bergoglio, I think) grew up in Argentina.

    • @1Hope4All

That's too bad that Bergoglio was chosen. It's funny you say "new world" because this anti-pope wants to start a new world order or new world religion. I want no part of it. He's even got it started already by speaking a lot of heresies and even with that demon idol "pachamama." Horrible. I wish Benedict XVI was still our Pope. B16 was *forced out.*

Austin, I’m no apologist, but I find apologetics a curious subject. Yes, I know it’s deadly serious, but I find it fascinating that one person can be told that they are a sinner and need salvation and, BINGO, they’re converted, while another like the atheist Christopher Hitchens can be presented with the most sophisticated intellectual arguments ever conceived and still remain an atheist, and Jordan Peterson can come so close yet be so far! Even more curious to me is that the tipping point for conversion is different for everybody and can occur anywhere along that spectrum. Without a doubt, the Holy Ghost works in mysterious ways.
Anywho, I’ve got a couple of videos for you that I find particularly compelling that argue in favor of the Catholic Church. Of course, I realize that you may not find them so, but I’m sure that at least you’ll find them very interesting.
The first is about Joe Biden’s encounter with the Pope, but the sum and substance of the video is about the Eucharist. It’s by John-Henry Weston, and it’s called, “Why are Catholics concerned with Biden receiving Communion? Hint: It has to do with John 6”. Actually the entire video focuses on just one aspect of John Chapter 6, but it’s a doozie!
The other is about Purgatory. Actually, it’s not a direct argument for Purgatory, rather it’s about the levels of prayer as taught by St. Theresa of Avila, and the huge mountain we have to climb in order to attain perfection, a.k.a. “sainthood”. Of course you know that the Catholic Church teaches that if we die in the state of grace but don’t attain perfection in this life that we go to Purgatory. This video describes the process of attaining perfection, and clearly shows how we are imperfect all along the way until we attain sainthood -- and consequently aren’t ready for heaven.
It’s by a world-renowned Catholic priest named Father Chad Ripperger. Father Ripperger is an orthodox Catholic philosopher and theologian in the school of St. Thomas Aquinas, a prolific podcaster who has also appeared as a guest on other Catholic podcasts such as Dr. Taylor Marshall’s and US Grace Force, and just happens to be widely regarded as the leading exorcist of the Catholic Church! The video is called, “Spiritual Theology Series: Levels of Prayer - Fr. Ripperger”. And even if you don’t agree with it, you’ll appreciate the theology in the video -- it’s brilliant.
    P.S.
Personally, I find it hard to argue with a guy who actually talks with demons.
    And God bless you!

I saw my life change when I heard the gospel preached and I was called to repent in public. Only then did my life change and the holy spirit fill me.

St Paul was the first one dealing with the heresy of the “judaizers”. Biblically speaking, alongside with Gnosticism, it was one of the first heresies in all Christian history and it is shown in the very text of the NT. Modern day heresies hardly ever are invented from ground zero; in general they are recycled and mingled with one another. A study case: anti-sacramentalism in general drinks from the Gnostic type of contempt for the matter in favor of a kind of spiritualism according to which the matter is objectively bad and the spirit is objectively good. Other example would be the Nestorian tendencies inside some of the hard core anti-Catholic ecclesial communities and sects: Mary is allegedly the mother of the human nature of Christ but not his divinity, as if a mother gave birth to a nature and not to a person (and that person is surely divine, the Eternal Word of God that is definitely proclaimed in our history). So if you study further, my friend, it is easy to see ALL kinds of heretical doctrines or at least tendencies are recycled from past heretical movements. And Seventh Day Adventism was a sect created in 19th century in Michigan, USA.

Funny how you call "Judaizers" those who obey God's 4th Commandment.
Do you believe God is a "Judaizer" because the sabbath will most definitely be kept in the new heaven and new earth!
      👉(Isaiah 66:23) 🤔????

@@protestant7778 a text taken out of context? I see. paul went to sinagogue on saturday because guess what? no one was going to be there on sunday. that doesnt mean he was observing the sabbath. he knew were and when to find them to presch the gospel. in fact after jesus resurrection, christians never gathered on saturday. maybe you should start asking why the adventist are the only one hanging on the sabbath aside from jewish.

I realize that this is a slight digression from your main mission, but the next time you do one, you could do worse than to delve into the story of Russians, native Alaskans and Orthodoxy in Alaska and the West Coast. Ideally, with Fr. Michael Oleksa, an incredible story-teller and expert in Native Alaskan culture and contributor to the Smithsonian. Again, a US/Christian history from a different, old & effecting perspective.

Austin, you GOTTA WATCH “Reasons You’ve Never Heard on Why Protestantism is WRONG” by Timothy J. Gordon on UA-cam.
Catchy title, eh? How could you possibly NOT watch a video with a title like that? But I’m not going to give away the content except to say that THIS WILL MAKE YOU STOP AND THINK.
Anywho, Timothy J. Gordon is an orthodox Catholic podcaster who is an Aristotelian/Thomistic philosopher, author, Church history teacher, and attorney (but we forgive him for being an attorney). By the way, when you watch his podcast, the scary looking sign behind him that says “Rules for Retrogrades” is the name of his show and the title of one of his books. The book contains tactics to ethically oppose the left, and was named in opposition to Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals”. And “Retrogrades” aren’t evil -- they’re people who harken back to tried-and-true moral principles passed down through history.
God Bless You. Love your show!

All these people talking up majority catholic countries live in the U.S. ( a majority Protestant country) and would never want to live in a majority catholic country. Why is it that a country like Mexico that is majority Catholic has people dying to leave it and come to a Protestant majority country like the U.S. ? Why are immigrants so desperate to leave Mexico ? If the country being majority Catholic is so great why don't you, Andrew want to live there instead of USA? You wouldn't.

I don’t know who said that, it is white countries that people want to live in. It has little to do with religion. The US is mostly secular if you haven’t noticed.

Answering your your first two questions. It’s about the economy not religion. Every major rich country who is surrounded by a less prosperous country will have an influx of immigrants. This is not unique only to our country. Yes I was born in the USA.

You will have to update from which countries Latino immigrants come and the reasons for leaving their countries, specially if you want to create a ministry for them. Your 90s data is making me giggle.
