I'm a 20 year old undergrad student studying computer science, and llike Jonathan, I've become disillusioned with my probable career path.
This lecture has truly been eye-opening to me because it is the first time that I've truly engaged with Nietzsche's ideas. I've taken over a page of notes so far and there is a lot that I have to think about.
Jonathan, I think these videos and lectures are awesome and I look forward to more, especially on Nietzsche!
If you want to truly engage with Nietzsche's ideas, you would do much better off reading his books directly - or are you not capable of forming your own opinions on his philosophy?

Thank you for making and sharing this. Listening to Pippin's later remarks in the conversation, about Hegel and against Nietzsche, made me think of Bernard Williams's similar observations: We "need each other" as Williams memorably put it in Truth and Truthfulness, "in order to be anybody." It's also fascinating to hear Pippin say so emphatically that the true problem isn't nihilism, it's global capitalism; I didn't expect such an unequivocal embrace of the view that the apparent philosophical problem is in reality merely a social one. I'm tempted to say that Pippin's resignation to the idea that all we can do is preserve is itself a symptom of nihilism. (Final thought: perhaps you might interview Miranda Fricker or Sophie Grace Chappell or Nikhil Krishnan or Vlad Vexler on Bernard Williams.)

Love it how the professor says he didn’t become famous for the right reason, but Nietzsche actually predicted the horrors committed in his name. He is being validated exactly as deserved in our modern era, we are half way through the nihilism timeline as he predicted.

I’ve found philosophy to be a place of comfort in knowing the questions and concerns I have with simply existing are not unique and billions of other souls are just as curious as I am to assign values and hear how others perceive the meaning they’ve assigned to their own lives
Being and Nothingness by Jean Paul Sartre is a book I hope Jonathan discusses in the near future
I believe it has great importance in assessing how to shift your paradigms you’re currently in in life but it doesn’t travel that road for you. Like it won’t show you in of itself how to energetically embrace life and tap into your higher/greater being. That takes natural curiosity to jump into and be brave. Realizing you don’t need to conform and that you are life itself and venturing to expand beyond current limits with intentional composed focus of course so you’re not all over the place like people are on smartphones/media addiction.
I tend to think of philosophy as broadly explaining reality and how it works. If I take that approach then all religions also offer interpretation of reality. So all philosophy is ultimately tested by how well it can explain our reality and help us make useful predictions. Nietzsche is only useful in the modernity context where “God is dead”. He laments the lack of purpose inherent in religions. So in our post-God world there is no single authority that explains it all. Science ultimately explains the how but not the why. And now in a globalised world all of philosophy is like a melting point which only adds to the confusion. So I think the direction of philosophy of the future is we’ll need new prophets and new revelations to make sense of the senseless.

You are an intellectual slave if you think the best way to consume philosophy is to have someone tell you about the writings of a philosopher rather than just reading their works yourself.

The only way to consume philosophy is by going within.
When you do this, several entities will stop you by distracting you from seeking the truth. They would inject thoughts that you would be swayed away by.
But if you are able to push through it all, the other side holds immortality.
Great interview. But can you also upload an unedited version of the interview? It seems Robert Pippin got cut short in multiple occasions when he was trying to elaborate his point and things started to get really interesting. We don’t mind the lengthiness of the interview. It doesn’t have to be completely and uniformly structured. Part of engaging in intellectual dialogue like this is its improvisation and spontaneity

i will be buying that book!! I have be paradoxically searching for that which inspires me enough that searching becomes irrelevant and becomes more like revelation that calls to me. To Waste Existence
I wonder,
what shall become waste within human entities?
As,
said entities seek simplistic existence,
what shall such,
attempt to be?
What shall become of thee?
For,
I wonder is waste,
tethered to that of reality?
Does that which the human create,
simply exist as,
waste?
For,
I wonder,
does the simplicity of an artificial existence,
lead only to senseless accumulation?
To the human,
existing absent why,
whilst tethering oneself to creation.
For,
in truth,
may we simply be beings of nature?
To take oneself from such,
may not only disrupt,
but,
of course,
irrevocably alter the way which the human seeks.
For,
that which exist as artificial,
in truth,
simply externalizes that of the organism.
Meaning,
it would seem the human,
simply seeks,
itself.
Rationalizing ways to exist tethered to the human,
whilst claiming said existence is tethered to externalities.
For,
that of competition,
is a simple internal existence,
relating to that of the organisms,
reproductive intention.
For,
each entity exist tethered to "Winning".
Being,
that which exist as a zygote.
The forming of an entity,
now tethered to being.
Tethered,
to the simplicity of,
that which exist as,
existence itself.
That of replication.
That which drives survival,
and,
procreation.
Simply to exist,
externally.
To be that which is simply able to be.
For,
within that of competition,
as it relates to the external.
There seems to be three forms which,
human entities continously exist tethered.
The first,
I would simply deem,
"Full Cycle".
Within that of the "Full Cycle",
that which represents the phallic system takes the form of,
the arm,
the leg,
the club,
the bat,
the hockey stick.
Each existing tethered to,
that of a deliver system.
That which propels,
semen as it attempts to reach the egg.
Such an existence is represented,
within that of the,
ball,
the goal,
the net.
The moment where procreation is actualized,
and,
existence begins.
The second form of externalizing internal reproductive intention,
one deems simply,
the "Race" stage.
Within such,
there is only a race to exist as number one.
The simplicity of being first.
Such an existence is plainly seen within,
of course,
racing.
That of nascar,
track.
That of,
swimming,
a marathon.
Each existing tethered to the simplicity of being dynamic beings,
seeking only to be first.
To be that which moves,
simply to be that which,
exist.
The third stage of externalizing,
that which exist as internal,
relating to that of the organism.
Is,
of course,
existence itself.
Within,
that of the "Existence" stage,
said organism seeks simplistic violence.
For,
there can only the one.
One tethered to being.
One able to exist,
within,
that of the egg.
Such an existence was seen plainly in the,
coliseum.
Where as,
gladiators fought to be beings.
To be that which,
draws breath.
To be tethered to,
existence.
Of course one sees such,
within,
that of,
fighting.
That of war,
the simplicity of conflict.
Each and every combat situation
essentially exist in such a way.
As to create,
the simplicity,
of existence.
I wonder,
since such is tethered to actuality,
what truly does the human,
create?
How is such an existence not tethered to waste,
if,
within such,
be not,
even a human mind?
Not even the ability to exist as such a kind.
For,
of course,
each human entity tethered to creating such realities,
knew not of,
why.
For,
all deem such to be apart of,
human life.
To be,
that which matters.
But,
of course,
such could never matter.
Could never be,
that which one deems,
not only substantive,
but,
tethered to that of rationality.
For,
I deem all that exist,
absent a mind.
Absent,
simplistic contemplation leading to immense comprehension,
to be tethered to,
nothing.
Nothing but,
uselessness.
Nothing but,
senseless ascension.
Nothing but,
a,
wasteful,
existence...

Nihilism does not exist. It is an adjective. How long does this Nihilism last? Moments? By what criteria do you define Nihilism? Something like (insert hand waving) when nothing means anything to a singular person and he adopts that as his philosophy. This world is indeed absurd.
Apparently, there is great meaning in nice suits, lavish old furniture and neat hair with the obligatory unread books as part of the background, and some piano music.
Apparently if we engage with "the texts" which texts? The buy bull with the talking snake and magic apples...we can delude ourselves into saying we learned something because we now have delusions about our own delusions.
I'm a man of science and I find "great meaning" in drinking a Pepsi and knowing that I do indeed find my carbonated high fructose infused soft beverage delightful. It means a great deal to me because I am addicted to the crap.
Now, music has NO particular meaning whatsoever and in any way shape or form does music have a meaning on its own, but you included it in your video, didn't you?
Where is this elusive "great meaning" and how can we word salad it into a physical manifestation?
The meaning of my own life is very very simple to state: I want to, in some small way, some how, make this world a better place while I am on this Earth and alive. That's my meaning. That is my purpose. I need neither sky daddy nor to delude myself with pseudo intellectual nonsense in order to achieve that. So far I have saved 8 lives from near instant death or the destruction of people's lives. They are alive today because I was there and I wasn't considering the meaning of anything other than....two (separate occasions) runaway trucks, somebody choking to death, and somebody in the beginning stages of dying from hypothermia. I've put out fires before they got out of hand. I've helped my fellow human beings wherever I could.
The "great meaningness" or "meaning" or "meaningfullness" of it all?
It stems from a singular idea: NOBODY, BUT NOBODY rises to the top on their own, succeeds on their own, or survives on their own.
We all need each other in order to survive.
Any meaning we make up along the way is just entertainment within our meaty brains.
Because the rocks will never care if we have meaning or not.
We are here today, and someday that will change.

Currently, right now, in "Modernity" there are people making the clothes you will wear in the future, and growing the food you will eat, and making things to entertain you, so let's show some gratitude because they don't get to wear nice suits and make youtube videos and pretend to be urbane and educated. (Spoiler alert, your material wouldn't even sum up a single course or even the chapter of a course on a college campus).
Don't you think other people have thought of these things before you did? Do you somehow believe that the Victorian Era was somehow superior and the height of civilization? Which period was it that was somehow the "ideal" to which we should all miss and weap for now that it is gone? I think that maybe just maybe people idealize the past. Spoiler alert, "Leave it to Beaver" and "Father Knows Best" are works of fiction and the world as portrayed in those television shows was NOT that way even during the time of production.
People feel "disaffected" by the world they live in because maybe, just maybe, they dreamed too big and had their dreams shattered. Perhaps just perhaps somebody got the job the promotion and the acclaim they deserved because of favoritism by a faction or a church towards somebody else.
Every single age and every single society is dystopian because NONE of them are utopian.

Dude if you want my advice as a 25 year know nothing I’d say trust & act on your intentions and your instincts TODAY. If you want to be a pilot start reading books and looking for the best academy today. If you want to be jacked start eating a hefty meaty diet and doing intense workouts today. If you want to know big words like inculcate and dynasticism start reading classic novels today. Don’t wait seize your youth and your vitality. Everyday we’re only getting older but if you begin your ascend, your inward journey, your life adventure NOW you will be something quite formidable come your 20s 30s whatever. And be formidable today by choosing life and beauty and excitement and instinct.
