  • This film was commissioned by Prof. Patricia Anderson for a presentation on the state of public housing in Jamaica, circa 2005. The film was produced and directed by Gregory Lopez. The shortage of public housing in Kingston, Jamaica has been a chronic problem since the 1930s when the city experienced mass migration from rural areas after disease ruined Jamaica's banana crop. The colonial government made an inadequate attempt at building public housing in Trench Town during the 1940s. Politicians in Jamaica have been grappling with the problem ever since. McIntyre Villas was a part of Michael Manley's constituency in Kingston, Jamaica. In this film, architect Patrick Stanigar looks back at Manley's attempt to address the problem which affected the people whom he represented in parliament.
