Hey folks! I want to get into sharing some more film recommendations this year on the channel, so big thanks to Radiance for sending over this absolute gem to review! Let me know what you thought in the comments 👇🏻
The final plant is definitely an object petit a. Some other elements that were particularly salient to me - the idea of the text being something that holds people, women especially, captive (letters freed from the page, no books on women scientists in the local library, that the letters read aloud are from the man, who quotes the woman, the text of the newspaper being decoded by Laura to find the caretakers, the men talking over their allotted time among some examples etc.) Also, the challenge presented to the idea of ownership at all, in reference to the burned down estate the books came from, or regarding the “stolen” car, the keys handed over to someone not in any “official” capacity anywhere, but still getting to the right person. But moreso the challenge to the idea of ownership of people, or relationships - also Godiva, also Kollontai, also that the woman didn’t want the creature to be “owned” or subjected to batteries of tests, also the boyfriend’s imaginary “ownership” of Laura, or the potential lover’s ownership of Laura, or the institution’s ownership of Laura. And the unfinished house with her boyfriend is doubled by the "accomodation room", also the burned out estate from which the books came - these reference the unfinished world which Laura perhaps enters in the final section - not inhabiting someone else’s space, but one uniquely her own, and which, by nature of all human life, is inaccessible to others. I could go on, but there's so much more.I was reminded of True Detective season one - "This is a world where nothing is solved," and Soderbergh's Solaris - "There are no answers. Only choices." It is a stunning piece of work.
This was one of my top films that I was able to see in 2023 and I absolutely adore it. I had spent nearly all year waiting for it to come out and was finally able to watch it late last year and it was marvelous
“That barely SCRAPES the surface” - if you are going to write up an expression on-screen, at least get it right! To scrap the surface wouldn’t make any sense anyway.

So so good! If i had seen it in 2023 it definitely would have landed firmly in my best of the year list
The Twin Peaks comparison seems so weird to me, it really feels more like a Rivette film than anything else.
