  • In this video I paint 10x terracotta plant pots with leaves and an autumnal theme. I made these pots for my friends wedding but if you want to paint these designs yourself you can use them to sell at markets or on your Etsy store, or to give as gifts or keep for yourself.
I paint 5x small pots and 5x larger pots in pairs, and each pair is a different colour and has a different leaf design. I start out as I always do and paint 1x coat of acrylic Gesso primer to each pot. I then paint the base coats and draw on my leaf designs. The longest part was painting the base colours with acrylic paints as every time you paint 1 coat, you can only do the top half and then wait for that to dry, and then go back to the bottom half and wait for that to dry. With some of these pots needing 4-5 coats of base colour, this became quite time consuming. There are definitely better quality acrylic paints than the ones I use so if you have better quality paints you may be able to get away with applying only 1 or 2 coats of paint.
When drawing my leaf designs, I use a gold Posca Pen, and I had a thin one as well as a thick one which I changed depending on the size of the pot I was doing and what design I was doing, however you can easily do the whole design only using the thinner pen. Some of the designs I had to go over twice with the pen, if there was a thicker line for example, I would need to draw it once and wait for it to dry, and then draw over it again with the posca pens.
Once I finished all of my designs, I painted each pot with 1x coat of mod podge. I do this because if I go straight in with my varnish, I risk the posca pens smudging or smearing as the varnish can sometimes cause that to happen, and in the past I have ruined a design by not applying mod podge 1st. It takes a little extra time but saves me time in the long run if I have to fix up the design and re-do parts.
Once the mod podge has dried for a few hours, I then go in with my Polyvine Heavy duty wood varnish. I usually apply 3x coats of this to each pot, leaving 30 minutes to 1 hour between each coat. I would recommend leaving for at least 24 hours once the varnish is applied before putting any plants inside as it takes several hours for the varnish to cure.
I love how these pots turned out and I was really happy with them. I always love how glossy and shiney the pots look once the varnish has been applied. The person I made these for was really happy with them as well.
I hope you liked this video and please let me know what you think of these pots by leaving me a comment. Let me know if you try any of these designs out for yourself and how you get on!
If you have any suggestions for future videos, please leave a comment below and I will consider for 2022!
Thank you so much for watching!
