Great summary on ibond interest....I couldn't figure out value and didn't realize they back out the last 3 months interest! Thanks for making this so clear.
Thank you so much for holding our hand and helping us cross the road. 🤣🤣 This might be very basic to some people but I could not figure out what that section was telling me for the longest time.
Jennifer, loving the new color-blocking sweater! Always guiding us and we so appreciate it. My husband is still snippy about the .gov with holding the last 3 months penalty saying every month, "Well I don't like and I don't like it!" Such is my life. It could be so much worse. You're the best- thank you as always. 😂😂😂
So it takes 5 months from the issue date for any interest to show up? Is there a way to tell what the rates are for the I bonds purchased, for the duration of the time they are held, to check to be sure we are getting the correct interest?
Good vid as always. I was planning on reporting my interest annually, but I now realize that the interest would always have to be known from January 1 of the previous year so you could do the subtraction from this year's January 1 amount. That's fine until you forget to look at some year until February, then you'd be screwed, it seems, because you wouldn't know last year's exact interest. What a mess. As much as I hate to wait and pay taxes on everything at redemption, at least I'd have a 1099-INT in my hand and it would result in much easier procedures come tax day.
Some ideas for videos: 1 - ok, I bought a bunch of t bills and cds from Fidelity based on your info... some are now maturing in the next week... how do I cash them out?!?! 2 - when are you going to start trying to predict i bond interest for May 2023? Thanks!
I love the current value of my I-Bonds! What do you think about a round of I-Bond gifts between family members right now to be received in 2024 vs other treasury bonds?
Is there a place to see a history of the monthly interest earned on an ibond on the treasury direct website? I can see the cumulative interest earned but it would be nice to see the monthly interest earned amount?
I had to go through the painful process of calling support for an unrelated issue. While I had them on the line I asked this question and the gentleman’s reply was “ I don’t think so”. He tried looking around for a short while and said “ I don’t see that”.
Any one else feel like they are tip toeing through a delicate glass forest when logging into Treasury direct? Feels like one wrong move and the whole thing will come crashing down.
Is their a way to find my “fixed rate “ on my i bonds. I’ve been purchasing them at different times and i haven’t been able to determine witch bonds are at 0% fixed rate and the ones that have a 1.3% fixed rate? I used treasury direct.
Happy New Year. Kinda off the subject. I notice my Treasury Direct C of I balance is higher than what I think it should be. For example, although I purchased T-Bills from C of I the balance level has not gone down after T-Bills have been issued. Wondering why?
Hi Jennifer What are your thoughts on the debt ceiling crisis and does that affect your purchasing of Treasury Bills or bonds in general? Would limiting purchases to 3 month bonds until this "crisis" comes to a head, possibly by mid year, be prudent. Or, just stay the course?
Can you do a tutorial on how to take your I Bond out at the one-year point if you want to with no penalties? I have 6 months so no rush, but I'm not sure at this point if I will need to withdraw. I understand if you do it at the end of 1 year there is no interest penalty. How exactly do you do that? On the one-year anniversary date or days prior based on government processing? Thanks and loving all your tips and guidance!
What about the interest on the I bonds in your gift box? Where is it displayed? For you as an example, where is the interest from the 20k you have in your gift box?
Some sites say it is best to redeem "after the first day of the month." It is best for me to redeem in Oct,. 2023, so can't I get all interest through Sept. 30 2023 if I redeem today, which is Oct. 1 2023? "After the first day..." could be interpreted to mean waiting until Oct. 2, 2023. Did my current value update from yesterday allowing me to redeem soonest, which is today?
If she bought the Ibond b/4 Nov 1 22 it would still show the 9.62 rate. So she could've got 10/31 and it'll pay her 9.62 for 6 mos, before moving on to the 6.48 rate 🙂
@@SuperGari2 you can buy $10k per calendar year. So for 2023 you can buy up to 10k then you gotta wait till next year unless you want to buy gifts, but that's another story🙃
Hi Jennifer Thanks for the refresher course. It's probably a good idea to go into the account and keep familiarized. Thanks again for your expertise. I'm quite sure that my next purchase will be T Bills, which are paying in the 4.77 for 3,6,9 month bills. They are close to overtaking CD's and no state tax. Can you have a class on them? Any idea why Treasury Direct won’t provide the ability to download a statement showing all of your current holdings? Something in Adobe pdf format or even a CSV. Seems the only thing you can do is take screen prints to try and prove you have holdings if something were to go awry with their system/website.
Hi. I bought a $10,000 iBond in June 2022 at a 9% interest but I checked today, 1-18.2023 and it only shows that I have gotten $320 interest. Shouldn't I have gotten $900? Is that what you mean by them holding the rest because it's a new ibond? When will the see the $580? Thanks for your informative videos.
How timely! I was just checking interest yesterday. However I can only see the interest for the 10K for myself and not the extra I bought as gift for my husband, is this normal? Does it only show up when we deliver the gift? Thank you in advance.
QUESTION: I bought 5K of I bonds w tax refund last year. They arrived in paper bill form about 8 wks later. The denominations were ridiculous! $25s mostly! Can you please do a vid on how to transfer this paper pile to my Treasury Direct account? Thanks!
Jennifer has a video on how the interest is calculated from last year. You can watch that for all the details. Short answer is, interest is added monthly, but only compounds every 6 months.
Thank you as always!!!! After 6 months, will my Ibond balance automatically receive the next current interest rate? And will that balance include my total or because of the pre calculated penalty, will my eligible interest only be 3 months worth? Ex: I purchased $10K at 9.6%. Will my balance of $10,960 carry over and receive further earnings of the new rate? or will only $10,480 be eligible for the new rate?
Great video as usual! I do have a Treasry Direct related question….I am aware that form 1099 for tax purposes is only available online. Under the manage direct tab for taxes I am only seeing a list of each of my individual securities for the year that have paid interest. As it is still very early in January, will treasury direct create a 1099, which covers all interest earned from all securities? (A 1099 for each security would be cumbersome!) Thank you so much and again, I love your videos.
Thanks. I'm not sure about this actually given that we're getting our first 1099 from TD this month as well. Perhaps some of the more experienced TD folks might be able to answer this question.

Yesterday I redeemed my IBond I purchased in 2021. It did give me the option to redeem either all or partial amount. You can put the exact amount you want to redeem. Hope this helps
Jennifer. I want to gift an IBond to the recipient, but it is now worth $10,080, not worth $10,000. Can I gift the $10,080, or only the yearly $10,000 limit. Thx. I wondered about this, and I have a friend who is wondering about it. Odd that Treasury Direct doesn't seem to answer this question.
You shouldn't see any interest if that's when you bought your I-Bonds. Here's the video on how I-Bond interest works: ua-cam.com/video/9hfHoSijJEk/v-deo.html
I’m not 100% sure. My understanding if your doing it through TD, you can only reinvest for same term. I parked my money in their c of I security that earns no interest then waited till the term I wanted to reinvest in. The account is used as a source of funds like your bank. I am not a financial advisor but that’s how I changed terms.
Thanks for sharing Leslie. As Leslie said, auto-roll/ reinvestment typically only works for the same term. You'd have to wait until your 6-month matures & use those proceeds to buy a T-Bill with a different term.
Can you please tell me, when do I first see the interest I've earned on my i-bond? I thought the interest was compounded monthly! How many months before it shows me how much interest I have made on my I bond?
