  • Nelson pass knows that the "best amplifier" that does everything does not simply exist so he created the "best" in its class ! how many watts do you need for an audiophile amplifier? 200 watts? 300 watts? quad zillion watts? The answer is no. Quality over quantity applies here.

lots of great information about a great product Jay... bringing more people into the world of beautiful high fidelity audio. It's ultimately about the experience and not about the numbers. Can you imagine people judging a bottle of wine based on it's sugar content or other measurable things like alcohol content? Ridiculous! We are living in a time where more efficient speakers can be coupled with sweet lower wattage amps voiced to be less fatiguing on the ears. thanks 🚀

And I actually appreciate the information you shared. You confirmed my thoughts on quality watts vs quantity. Although it doesn’t make the amp selection easier if one’s not familiar with a particular model. First Watt must be great!

Great Intro, Jay! First clear step into the Hifi Wattage Myth over decades. Thoroughly comparing the difference of wattage quality importance over quantity. And the description of how
the clean quality watts could possibly sound. Rarely I see reviewers mention the speakers, electronics he paired up for certain review (and come out the motion and feels). But you did.
Particular appreciate your passion and honesty. Thank you.

Very well described review of FW F7. Products of First Watt is something beyond explanation, it is a pure enjoyment. I have First watt M2 connected with a tube pre and I Prefer M2 more than my Bryston 4b sst2. I think First watt products matches very well with tube pre, because the M2 does not sound that good when it is connected with Bryston bp26, but it is totally exceptionally great when connected with my DIY tube preamp. And my speaker is only 87 db.

On the subject of power, it is important to understand how power relates to volume and the principles and reasoning behind power matching between amps and speakers.
Volume is measured in decibels (dB) which is a logarithmic scale that would be unfamiliar to most people. In the dB scale, a rise of 10 dB is about double the perceived volume. That is, 0 dB is twice as loud as -10 dB and 10 dB is twice as loud at 0 dB etc. dB also directly relates to power, a rise of 10 dB requires 10 times the power. So, a 10-Watt amp is twice as loud as a 1-Watt amp, a 100-Watt amp is twice as loud as a 10-Watt amp and a 1000-Watt amp is twice as loud as a 100-Watt amp. We can see then that if we require a small increase in volume, we need a much larger increase in power, assuming we are using the same speaker load and sensitivity.
How much power do we need? Well that depends on the size of the room and the efficiency of the speakers. If the speakers and or amp are inadequate, this leads to turning up the volume to the point where damage to these components occurs. It is important to match the amps and speakers’ continuous power to both the room and to each other. There are many definitions of power but continuous power is what these components can withstand without damage in continuous operation. One of the biggest destroyers of speakers is when an amp is clipping at high volumes. Clipping is what happens to the signal when the amp is pushed to its upper limit. Electrical signal is like AC voltage, just with a complex mix of frequencies. Graphing this voltage over time should look like a complex smoothly curving line. When an amp is pushed beyond its limit, the tops of these curves get cut off flat. This sounds like a type of distortion and it causes the speaker drivers to overheat and get damaged. Typically, the damaged condition is permanent and sounds like there is sand in the speakers but they may be burned out and just not work at all. This type of damage tends to occur when an amp is less powerful than the speaker. To avoid this, and assuming the speakers are powerful enough for the room size, it is generally considered good practice to ensure the amp is matched or a little more powerful than the speakers. This is fine because you only turn up the volume to what you are comfortable listening too, but it is conditional upon the speakers being more than adequate for the room. Obviously, if they are not adequate, you can turn up the power too much and burn them out. So, it is important to avoid equipment choices that have borderline adequate power handling and go beyond the lower limit by at least 10 dB to ensure you have sufficient head room for safe operation.
Maybe do some research on room size, furnishings and power.....
    Concerning the complexity of electronics:
All electrical components generate some self-noise, especially resistors. Each type of component, has various sub type options and these very in self-noise quite a lot. So, there are choices in component quality vs price and circuit design very significantly influences self-noise as well. Generally, though, you are correct that minimising components reduces self-noise, but it’s not the only consideration. There are design goals to meet and circuits are already designed to meet those goals with minimal componentry. Equipment that is exceedingly simple is not necessarily the best option because it also indicates a lack of adequate design goals, little things like flat spectrum response, low distortion, the ability of an amp to drive complex loads, high fidelity etc. You know that manufacturers do not cram in components for not reason. Every component adds to their manufacturing casts and they go to great effort to minimise that…. So just think about that a bit.
The fact that the amp produces harmonics that assist musicality means that the amp is not true to source but adding its own artifacts that are not present in the source media. While you personally may find this pleasurable, this is not high fidelity.

Just started using John Linsley Hood 1969 Class A amplifier which is all Class A 10W with minimal headroom as it's a single voltage rail amp, 30V max. The output is through a capacitor but seems to be low distortion and sufficient power for Proac Studio 3 that are about 86dBa average efficiency. Can still be pretty damn loud, and clipping is valve like being very inoffensive. I do have a 700W class A, a Krell which doesn't seem to have much advantage over the JLH except the bass and Max loudness. And this from 10W? You better believe it!

You don't need a ton of watts to get loud. But the more watts you have the louder you can go without distortion. Cause you don't have to turn the volume up so much

    • @Jayiyagi
      @Jayiyagi  4 роки тому +5

Not necessarily true. How many watts do you possibly need to start distorting due to loud volume? Usually when a 200 watt amp distorts its either the amplifier not being able to drive the load of the speaker or the person blasting it to oblivion. Again, if you are about blasting speakers past concert level... More watts required for sure

  • @gordthor5351

I have a 45 watt/ch Parasound amp and it sounds great in a small room. I thought I would try it in a big room where I have a 150 watt amp. They are both high current amps and I don't listen to music super loud. One might think that both would perform equally up to the rated power of the smaller amp, but that isn't the case with the bass. There is more bass punch (in a bigger room) even at lower volume with a more powerful amp (considering equal quality of both amps). Also, if a lower wattage amp is pushed to it's limit, it will sound stressed compared to an amp with more reserve.

  • @mikelm222

When Nelson says that the F7 works very well with Tube preamps it's because the positive feedback feature that can boost the damping factor of the F7 depends upon the o/p of the preamp being reasonably high. 1K ohm o/p impedance will be fine. If anyone has a good preamp with a low o/p impedance the adding a resistor externally will completely restore the damping factor boost function of the F7

It takes more than a few watts or ("4" watts 90,93,96 at 1 m) to get you to rock concert levels. Loud yes, but rock concert? Have you been to a concert lately? At 90 dB at 1 watt, you would need about 120 watts for 110dB...or more depending on where you are from speakers in theory. Rock concert SPL levels go right through you. Still, I and many mostly use no more than a few watts or so...until transients kick in requiring 10X power or more perhaps? As to having to spend thousands for quality amps, I hope not at least for most dynamic speaker designs. Should be lots of choices under 2K and even 1K that can do well. Except for Magnepans and the like.

Hey Jay That desription of dB deline over distance measurement is in error in a real world listening room. They are measured in free air ( open space with no walls) or an anechoic (acoustically dead ) chamber.
Its done that way to establsh a worst case scenario baseline without or minimal variables.
Once you introduce the biggest variable. The room and all that multiple reflection absorption, possible standing waves & sympathetic resonance weird shapes & dimensions & even open plan multi storey. All bets are off
The only way to know how YOUR room/ listening environment is affecting the sound is measure it @ the listening position/s on a case by case basis. Cheers

I don't know a lot about amplifier construction but, I have noticed that lower powered versions of the same series have a slightly more delicate sound-- a refinement? I've had as many as 14 different Bryston's over the years. The 50W Bryston 2B sounded better to me than the top of the line (at the time) 200W Bryston 4B. The same sound signature, characteristics and consistency but, I preferred the sound of the lighter amp. I've noticed the same thing in the Accuphase line. The E280 is often cited to be the nicest sounding of the line.

Nelson Pass builds musical sounding amplifiers , using the term "musical" that many shy away from but I embrace . I put Pass gear in the same listening category as Luxman in that both companies have many amps with sonic characteristics most easily said as musical . I don't know any better trait for listening to music. Don't underestimate the f7 , note the output capacitance of 60,000uf/channel , that resembles many very good 200 watt / channel ab amps. A class A design like this will give you full dynamic range even at low listening levels and perform better with some 90db+ speakers than higher watt amps.

A lot of you guys need to start including exactly what type of "music" you are listening to. Like naming the actual tracks. I listen to a lot of Rock so yeah its music but It would help if you guys would say this amp is great for Electronic, but sucks with Classical or its not that good for that. I have 0 interest in getting a DAC or a AMP that is awesome for Vocals, because almost none of the music in my library is Vocals.

Hello Jay, I'm a 30+ year pro sound veteran and audiophile so you know .if you go class D and get the Crown XLS you can get good clean sound ,low distortion, neutrality, high damping factor and high wattage as well as the ability to drive difficult speaker loads starting around $400-$1000 you don't need to spend $3000 to get good sound. It is a misconception that a good amp must be crazy expensive and get hot enough to cook on or heat your home in the winter

Incedently, I recently got the Hegel H90 and it’s pre out into my power amp sounds better than using my other Preamp’s (one is a tube pre), while using it as an integrated things sounded from poor to broken depending on the speaker (hint don’t try it with the Triangle Trio!) 🤣 Guess that’s synergy for you! So I have a Hegel P20 pre on the way 🍿Would love to try one of Nelson’s amps!

An excellent review as usual, thank you. The F7 should make for a superb pairing with Tekton speakers. I am thinking Moab or Double Impact. That would be one hell of a system for under 10 grand. I am with you on this one. I had a pair of Klipsch RP8000f, and it never sound good no matter what avr receiver I throw at it until I got a vintage Pioneer sx 737 with only 37 watts. But still was not satisfied with the sound, so went and got a pair of Klipsch rf 7, but then the Pioneer sx 737 sounded thin or very distorted, didnt sound good at all. Try a bunch of different vintage gears from 50 watts up too 80 watts and still didnt sound good until I finally got my hands on a Realistic STA 2100D at 120 watts. It finally sounds good. Vocals and instruments sounds more real now, everything is clear and control. I think most people pay more intentions to vocals and tend to forget that lower watts amp lose out music instruments dynamics, and control.

@@delvalle9256 I have the Pontus (just one week), can't say it sounds digital. I can't compare it with the ares. But the Pontus (like the venus and terminator) have had a upgrade with the DSP boards. Maybe the old boards sound more digital. I like the Pontus more than the topping d90 mqa.

@@delvalle9256 The biggest difference was in my speaker setup. En the main comparison I did was with the dac in my hegel H190. What Jay discribd in his video about the Pontus, I did hear. Beter and more precise soundstage. Wider and deeper. More holographic. I did hear te same kind of difference comparing with the d90 mqa. But I have not done extensive testing because both where not burned in.
In my headphone setup (using the topping A90 headphone amplifier) the difference between the topping and denafrips are much smaller. I still prefer the Denafrips Pontus. I will do some more comparison when all are burned in and my balanced headphone cables for my Quad era-1 headphone are arrived and a ZMF headphone.

A most confusing video. So more watts in an amp don’t impact sound?? So I am trying to determine if I should buy another Macintosh amp for a b&w 803 I may buyI (own an mc255 and use for 3 channels, so I get 250 w per channel-would get 200 per channel if I used 5 channels; 250w I hear may not be enough for 803 to achieve better sound quality as spkr is rated up to 500w). Was told that I should biamp by splitting unused amps in mc255 between the 804’s I know own and also can do this with 803’s which then give me 400w per 803 spkr. Sounds good

    • @Jayiyagi
