    Welcome to Video Poker Genius! This is part 2 of a series of videos designed to help you become a better video poker player.
    In this part, I play 150 practice hands of 8/5 Bonus Poker with live commentary. There is no quiz for this part because the strategy for Bonus Poker is nearly similar to Jacks or Better with no major changes to proper strategy.

    So I've always wondered... for the hand at 9:07. Why do you get rid of the ace? Does it have something to do with straights? I'm confused cuz the potential for four aces has a large payout? Thx

    • @ClubMikeV
      @ClubMikeV  5 років тому +3

      Yes. Part of it has to do with straights. Holding KJ brings the possibility of either a king high straight or an ace high straight and the rare chance of a full house or quads. If you hold all 3 high cards, there is only one way to make a straight (ace high). A payoff of 400 for 4 aces in Bonus Poker is not high enough to justify holding the ace alone. That changes in Double Double Bonus when the payoffs increase to 800 for 4 aces and 2000 for 4 aces with a kicker.
      Hope this helps.

    Great video Mike what training software is that

    • @ClubMikeV
      @ClubMikeV  6 років тому +1

      The training mode seen here for this and all video poker variants can be found at videopoker.com. To access training mode (traffic light on bottom right) and custom pay tables, you would need to pay an annual subscription. If you want to only access the games, then the site is free to use.

    Is there a certain amount of hands you should play ?

    Do the returns vary on these type of games from state to state and/or casino to casino?

    • @ClubMikeV
      @ClubMikeV  Рік тому

      Yes. There are several pay tables for each video poker variant that a casino can choose to set and put on the floor. This video shows the pay table for 8/5 Bonus Poker, but the casino you play in might have the 7/5 pay table instead. They may also vary from machine to machine within the same casino or even vary by denomination within the same machine.

    If you have Jack Hearts nine diamonds seven Club King spade a ce diamond then why would you pick the king and the Jack instead of the king and the ace if Ace is a better payout and both the ace and the King are higher than jacks? At 9:13

    • @ClubMikeV
      @ClubMikeV  Рік тому

      In this case, holding the king and jack has a slightly higher expected value than holding the ace-king. Most likely due to the fact that there are 2 ways you can make a straight holding KJ and only 1 way when holding AK. The payoff of 400 credits for 4 aces is not enough to close the gap in expected value but it comes close. The EV of holding KJ is 2.392 coins and the EV of holding AK is 2.35 coins. Therefore, KJ is the slightly better play. Hope this helps!

    Also quick question do you ever use the double down feature. ? And if so when and how many times. I understand there is no house edge and doing so just increases variance but I wanted to get your opinion

    • @ClubMikeV
      @ClubMikeV  6 років тому

      Hey Thomas,
      Personally, I rarely use it (assuming it is available) unless I feel bored. I tend to use it when the amount being risked is small. A few older videos on my channel show me using the double-up feature while playing for real money on a gambling site.
      Ultimately it is a matter of preference. What about you? Do you use the double-up feature? How often?
      Thanks for the question!

      Hey Mike thanks for the quick response. I'm over here on the east coast in New York most of my vp play is in Atlantic City. I can still get a few of the 9 6 games at a dollar denom and even one or two full pay dueces still exist but besides that the games can be tough. With that being said I tend to double down on even money payouts in games like double double just to try and make a unit rather than just a push on pair or two pair but even that eats away at the money quick. I'm pretty much the same way if I'm up a bit I'll try it once or twice but never more than that I always want to hear other players opinions on it though. I know plenty of people who double three or four times hopefully turning a pair into a full house pay out lol and at the other spectrum people who will just disable it from the beginning but I know at Harrah's ac it's on automatically unless shut off for every machine I play. I guess I'm right in the middle of the two

    Why not go for inside straights? What is it going to hurt?

    • @ClubMikeV
      @ClubMikeV  4 роки тому +2

      It just so happens that in Bonus Poker and Jacks or Better, the expected value of discarding all 5 cards is slightly higher than holding an inside straight draw. In other variants such as Double Bonus and DDB, the EV of discarding everything dips below an inside straight simply due to the reduced payoff for a 2 pair from 10 to 5.

    For bonus poker if you're dealt 3 A's and a low pair do you keep the full house or go for the 4 of a kind? (since they pay more for Aces here) Never played Bonus before. =)

    • @ClubMikeV
      @ClubMikeV  5 років тому +2

      Hi Kenny,
      The strategy for Bonus Poker is almost the same as in standard Jacks or Better. The best play is to keep the full house. A payoff of 400 for 4 aces is still not high enough to justify breaking s full house.

    How long are your session and do put a limit on win and losses per session

    • @ClubMikeV
      @ClubMikeV  6 років тому +3

      Personally, it depends on my budget for the trip. I usually play single hand VP at $0.25 denomination. If I am winning, I will usually put an amount in my head that I must cash out with if I start to lose. For example, I put $20 in a machine. I win $90 and my credit meter shows $110. I then decide that I will cash out once the amount of credits falls to $80. If that happens, I cash out.
