  • This dynamic warmup drill, introduced by club and high school coach Tod Mattox, gives players an active, game-like activity that focuses on middle transition.
Two teams play each other in 6 vs. 6. One player, a middle, is designated as the hot hitter, meaning he or she is the only player on the floor who can take a full swing.
Play begins when the coach enters a ball from the sideline to the team with the hot hitter. They pass, set and the middle swings away. The defending team is only allowed two contacts to return the ball -- and they can only bump, tip or shoot. No full swings.
The purpose of this drill is to get teams transitioning well enough off a dig that setting the middle is a viable option. This means "digging the ball to target" and executing a set that’s more challenging than a standard, left-side high ball.
By working on middle transition within a regular scrimmage, teams learn to become more versatile with their offense and more precise with their digging and setting. And a strong middle attack gives your opponent’s block-defense more to worry about.
