  • Today we're going to discuss the difference between the terms Black and African American, and everything you need to know about African American genealogy, genetics, DNA and origin.
Be sure to let me know your thoughts on the rather arbitrary labels of “Black” and “African American.” I'm not telling people what to call themselves with this video, merely explaining the common American vernacular. Also be sure to share your thoughts on Black American history and please be cordial in the comments section. Thanks for watching!

Black Americans, even though they make just about 12.5% of the U.S. population has a disproportionate amount of influence in the culture at large especially in music, sports, and entertainment. Just about every popular American music genre (Blues, Rock, Jazz, Disco, Funk, Techno, R&B, Hip Hop, etc.) was created by black Americans, .

I'm from Chicago and I can attest Europeans have no influence on our culture because we are prejudice towards Europeans.

@Luka I don't know if you've been living under a rock, but most popular celebs are black. The music thats popular in the US is hiphop/rap so basically black people music lol. Same as fashion sense, which is widely influenced by black people. Black culture is very popular and you can't deny it

      What's fact and what's fantasy?
Because a lot of people believe the out-of-africa theory is pure fantasy but according to genetic scientists, who have study DNA of the many different ethnicities of the world. Africa is the birthplace of modern humans and everybody has a ancient African ancestor.
The facts are the facts. There's no getting around it.

This video brought me to a very interesting thought. Black American has become its own ethnicity in its own right and is very much separated from African cultures and is a genetic blend of several peoples from not only Africa, but also Europe. I think in the same way, White Americans are moving towards this same "conclusion" (if you can call it that.) The intermingling of different European ethnicities is creating a uniquely "American" look. Given a couple hundred to a thousand more years and, without any major intervention, I could imagine Europeans and White Americans would become more distinctively different.

+DUGGA 666 I bet you’re an Afro-American lying about being 100 percent African & most likely you probably didn’t do any dna testing like the initial commenter. Even if you were to happen to do genetic dna testing, and your results came back 100 percent African it doesn’t mean all your ancestors were African seeing that dna is dispersed in a random toss toss 50/50, that is being upon conception each one of your parents disperse unto you a random 50 percent of their genetic make ups, causing your genetic profile to be unique among all of your siblings. Therefore your ethnicity estimates in your autosomal dna test results is never representative of all your ancestors who were responsible for ultimately bringing you into existence.

He did a good job with this one. I did one of those DNA tests & 25% of my genome came back as Mali & 3% Senegal. I didn't think Black Americans could have that high DNA markers from the Upper Guinea regions. I traced my great great grandparents history & 2 sets of them were freed from Louisiana. I read that this area had the largest amount of Mandinka & Wolof slaves so my ancestry could possibly have ties to those ethnic groups or other related peoples. I just found it interesting. I also thought whatever percentage European that was in my DNA would be English or Irish..which is typical..but my genetic markers pointed towards Germany & France with traces of Eastern European (21% European). I found that strange.

Do your genealogy and you may find that you are American Indian and not "African American" which is a misnomer anyway (black also is a color/status not ethnicity). We were here before Columbus. You can also find informational videos on UA-cam pertaining to these "DNA tests" which are for "entertainment purposes", stated by the dna companies themselves (read the fine print).

African Americans are a distinct ethnic group in the United States, and deserve to be treated as such by tge United States Government. (As are the Lousianna Creoles -- who speak their own language and predate the modern U.S. -- but thats another story)
There is overlap with other groups due to the Pre-Civil Rights Era and Cross Cultural marriages and unions. But this is a fact.
Thank you for having common sense. But this common sense probably comes from you growing up around Black people who werent AA (you said Ethiopians) and also you being 1/4 AA yourself.
Its racist and ignotant to lump all Black people together. Not to mention culturally Afrodescent people are very different. That cant be stressed enough. There are (NonXenophobic) AAs who use to take it as an insult, but it was always just peope adknowledging who they are and their parents/grandparents/ancestors.
As far as the DNA thing goes, many AfroCaribbeans say things like "How am I going to be AA with a South Asian or East Asian parent/grandparent/ancestry?" As this is something common to AfroCaribbeans and the AfroCaribbean Diaspora, to varying degrees and admixtures. Aside the cultural factors so yes I agree. Like I feel Black around AfroCaribbeans, but lesser so around African Americans, so yeah.

      1. We're not all equally educated. If you know better you do better.
      2. As a group for a large portion of our historical presence we've attempted to homogenize. If you spend all your time thinking being someone else you will seek accoutrements to satisfy that feeling for better or worse. You spend your life being anything but yourself, literally.
      3. All the negative acts to hamstring cannot be ignored. (Black Codes, redlining, Jim Crow, etc.)
      4. We don't see ourselves as one group the way some first generation immigrants see themselves. (do you want to stand out or blend in? You can't do both.)

Just because the French have a lot of Iberian DNA from ancient admixture doesn't make them Spaniards. Just because the Choctaw have some Mesoamerican Native DNA from pre -Columbian admixture doesn't make them Mexican citizens does it? 🤔

It is true i have an AFRICAN ancestor that was bought her as a slave but Im born an raised AMERICAN. I love my African brothers and sisters but outside of our skin color.. we are different cultures. We dont look a like and you can tell a black american from an African and even those of Caribbean descent. I say an African American is an African that came to the US and now is a citizen OR has a child on US soil. That is an AFRICAN AMERICAN! Besides two generations before mine ( grand mothers people and her parrents) traced our history and kept a 100 Year old BIBLE that had the names and b days of family members not to mention old black and white photos of family. A lot of my family had jewish, and native american in them..it was discovered that we have Blackfoot and pistcatway native american roots as well and confirmed NOT JUST THE IGNORANT HEARSAY THAT " I got Indian in my family!" Nor to mention we have a lot of Proctor Newman in us and that was my grandmothers maidin name. I think you are mistaken in your reasoning behind why their are a high proportion of Irish and Welsh names among the former slaves. Neither were major slave owning peoples and the English had the greatest population and were the biggest slave owners. So that doesn't explain why English names don't feature heavily among the American black population. As for the Welsh, their numbers were small, albiet very influencial on the development of American society. The contributiom of Welsh Americans to Welsh society is far out of proportion for the size of the population. A nation of overachievers. Yet the history of Welsh Americans or Cymry Americanwyr is largely forgotten today. But they did not posess slaves in great numbers amongst them.
The Irish also were not a big slave owning people. Yes their was many Irish slave owners but these were mostly of what were known as the Scotch Irish as in those of Northern Ireland. They were mostly of Scottish descent having colonised the north of Ireland in the 17th century and make up just over half the population of Northern Ireland today. They are the group trying to keep the north under British rule. They have mostly Scottish names which are not prominent among the former slaves. So again your theory doesn't hold up that black Americans got their names from Welsh and Irish slave owners.
It is mostly accepted that freed blacks took the names of the men who worked to free them or the pastors of their churches who fought for the emancipation of the black people. These were mostly Welsh and Irish. As they too knew suffering under the White Anglo Saxon Protestants. The Welsh were seen as second class citizens both in the UK and the US while the Irish were seen as 'no better then blacks'. The Irish in places where treated the same as blacks and were even sold into slavery by the English and shipped off to the Carribean. It was common for boarding homes and hotels to implement segragation and it was common to see signs saying; "No Irish, no dogs, no blacks".

I know I'm late to the party to post this comment but I am confused as to where you got your information from. The Irish were enslavers and were evil to the American Descendants of Slavery. Please read the book "How The Irish Became White." Additionally you said the Welsh weren't slave owners but the freed slaves took on the name Jones; a Welsh surname because they took the surname of the persons that helped the most. I am an American Descendant of Slavery and Jones is my maiden name. Five minutes of research on Ancestry.com debunks your hypothesis. There are 39,751 pages of Slave Owners with the surname Jones on the 1850 United States Slave Schedule. Additionally the only reason the Irish weren't enslavers in large numbers is because they were poor and some couldn't speak English. Make no mistake the Irish directly participated in the broke man's wing of the slave economy. Irish were the overseers, they hunt escaped slaves to bring them back to re-enslave them. I personally have 5% Irish ancestry so they were rapping enslaved women just like the English, which to your point most of my European ancestry is English.

I just feel that "African American" applied to black Americans is somewhat inaccurate because they have little or no interest at all to connect with their African roots, language and culture. But if the person asked me to call them "African American", I will do it as a sign of courtesy. I'd like to know, too. I've heard of groups in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Angola, the Biafra Region, Benin/Togo, Ghana, etc...
