Anything to keep the milk from spilling is a good thing! I saw an episode of the Alaskan Kilchers many years ago where Otto made a "poop slide" for his milk cows. I guess necessity is the mother of invention.☺️😂🤣
Thanks for sharing this with us Pa. Had a rodeo or two when breaking in a new milk cow on a dairy farm when I was real young, it can be a chore for sure. Stay safe and keep up the great videos. Fred.
just got kicked clear across the stall this morning. Out of no where, and for no reason she wailed off and bam- holy cow. i have a set of these, so gonna have to start training cause this is the 4th time in 2 yrs she sent me flying. and her heifer is due to calf in march so she will also need to be trained, thanks for showing us how they work. blessings
I'm so sorry; sometimes when they do that to me it's usually a cut on the udder that I didn't notice when I grabbed on. Nevertheless, when they do that, grab 'em at the base of the tail and hold it straight up. It won't hurt 'em, but gets their attention; and if they know that's coming every time, they'll think twice before doin' it, and they only do it if they've got a really hurt cut or something
@@farmhandscompanion thank you so much. i will try to remember that if she does it again, i was in shock and when i picked myself up i just yelled at her and told her she was bad. and she didnt get her back massage or rub down when i was done like everyday, i will have to look and see if she has something going on. it is just out of nowhere and your brain is scrambled a bit. thank you. new subscriber thanks to this video. will binge watch . blessings
They still make them out of thick nylon strap and Velcro for cows and goats. Question: Do your children love the same old time way of living like you do? Anyone following in your footsteps?
If I were to make a set of hobbles, I would start with a dog chain. The end without the slot I would cut off the ring off to pass through the hole. Once that is accomplished, I would replace that with one of the grenade rings that are kicking around. If you don't have access to hand grenades, making or finding a suitable ring wouldn't be very hard.
It occurs to me that a better suggestion would be to squish one of the rings in a vice, pass that end through the hole and then make the ring round-ish again.
PaMac, are you aware of the state's agreement with Exxon-Mobil for precious metals mining in southern Arkansas? At first it sounded great to me, until I saw a couple serious comments about how disfiguring it is, because is it open-mining. What's your opinion?
I have a set of these hobbles and I can confirm that they do not work as described. Sure, they prevented my wife from kicking me, for the first 30 seconds anyway, but there was nothing to stop her from repeatedly punching me until my face was black and blue. To my horror, she managed to slip out of the hobbles within 30 seconds, and that is when the real beating began.
The minute you said "brand new shiny bucket" I knew exactly where that story was going.
I don't remember using hobbles much. Never really been kicked across the stable. But I've been flogged many times by a tail!
Thank you for this great video Pa Mac. I hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

We are getting a milk cow sometime in the next year! Any advice for keeping the flies to a minimum in the milking area?
