If your don’t seal the taillight it will eventually start to dim in spots and burnout. Then you will have to fork out big cash! Or hope your warranty goes through in a timely manner(if you have a warranty) Thank me later..
If moisture (but no pooling water) has already gotten into the assembly, do you have any suggestions on how to dry it out before sealing it? I'd hate to seal any sort of moisture inside. My only thought would be to run continuous air into the assembly, but there doesn't appear to be any convenient place to do that.
Extended warranty? Dodge isn’t giving anyone the time of day on it especially calling the service center. There’s no recall and it’s not covered is what they’ve told me
I have a 2017 and in 2020 I started to notice water in mine and fortunately I got it replaced under warranty. But after about a year I noticed water in there again. So I removed the the light and siliconed everything and haven’t had any water in the light at all. I did this after watching your first video you made about this. It was super easy and I appreciate the knowledge you put out there for us Durango owns. I just wish Dodge would address this issue and take care of their customers!
Thanks man, I have to drain the water everytime I take the car for wash, now thanks to you I'll use silicone to close all the gaps around the taillight. Keep it up 👍🏻.
I have no doubt this works, but if you want to skip all of that for the racetrack light bar, simply remove the bottom screw on either side of the hatch. Alex shows them at 2:30. This has served as an effective drain/breather vent on my 2018 for years now and seems to prevent moisture build up. I admit, we don't drive too many dirt roads with it and it is garaged, but dust working into the light has not been a problem. Light still works great
@@carrieyoung4118 center light is only $300 if buying from aftermarket not the dealer...LoL... clearly you're not getting anything better from the dealer infact I didn't notice a bunch of cracks in my eBay inner and outer set for my race track lights.

I just got my 2016 RT and didn't even consider this. Thank you to the algorithm to send me this video and thank you for posting it. Very well done and easy to follow.
I am going to do this this week. I will use a black silicone to seal the edges up and spray undercoating on the back sides of the lights to seal up and hair line cracks from the unit being over tightened. This is my 2nd light for the Durango. The first was a long wait and it was covered under warranty. I have a small amount of water in mine now. With the power disconnected I will add 90 proof rubbing alcohol and distilled water to rinse out some dirt and bugs before I seal it up. Rinse it out and drain it through a small crack and let it evaporate in the sun then hit it with the sealing. The undercoating will also be a slight sound dampening. Time to add a few LED bulbs for the reverse lights. Thanks for the walk through.
I have a 2017 R/T and water started getting in the right side light. To make this short Ill tell you how I fixed the leak for $10 and 15 minutes: I bought 3m black tape about a half inch wide made to put on a car as a trim piece. Amazon purchase. I carefully taped it along the entire length of the fixture and the painted hatch. After 2 months it’s still keeping water from getting in. Can’t even notice it unless you know it’s there. Maybe every spring I’ll replace it. Not the final solution but at a minimum it’s keeping water out now. I had previously removed a screw in the door so when the door is opened the water would drain out. No water now.
The main vulnerable area is the gasket around the two big holes on each side (where the electrical wiring runs through). You need to add some thickness on those gaskets to create a better seal against the car.
In doing a search for a fix, some class action lawsuits came up to force dodge to fix this well known. Flaw. I noticed some water in mine, did the side bolt drain trick, but it's still got many droplets in the center part.
Thank you so much for the info on this i just got a durango a few days ago so this is very informative and i will probably do this once its all serviced and at home. 👍
Why wasn’t this done at the factory? Thanks for the tip! I see Durango’s driving around with their race strip lights dim or completely off. Now I know how to fix it if I ever get this vehicle.
Good overview. Repair is not too bad of you are comfortable taking your tailgate apart. Sealing is easy and the locations are somewhat concealed so you don't have to have a perfect bead since it wont show.
Wondering if the 2011 to 2013 tail lights have the same issue as the racetrack tail lights? Wasn’t sure if it’s the tailgate design that is causing the leak or if it’s the race track tail lights themselves that are leaking. The body style is the same from 11 to 2023. Thanks for the instructions! After spending an hour trying to figure out how to get the yellow tabs to pop, I decided I'll be at the mercy of the dealership... Haha. If anyone can figure out a trick, let me know. I tried pliers, vice grips, and needle nose pliers and still can't figure out how they even work!!!
One part that was left out, is that you will need a child's size hand to get in and squeeze those yellow tabs down (guessing this is why it didn't get recorded). Also, my green tabs wouldn't budge and I ended up breaking the trim. Use cutting tools on those tabs and just have a new set to hand. Thank me later
Use a pair of needle nose vice grip pliers. Set them to lock super close and just slide them over the tabs and pull down on the trim. Made it so much easier.
Definitely cut the green tabs and just replace. My trim piece broke before the green tab did. I cut of the second green tab and got it off without damaging the trim. 😢
