There is a technical service bulletin on it saying there’s a rattle noise on cold start up because of the vvt-i gear assembly (sprocket of intake camshaft) or because of the timing chain tensioner, good luck! For mine I’ve replaced both and no more noise.
Thank you so much for your information. How much did you pay for that vvt-i gear repair, I researched on it and it is quite a lot of work and expensive; however, it seems like it only happens when the weather is cold. I am going to monitor it for now. I am sure the warranty of my old 09 corolla is long gone. Thank you so much for your comment and thank you for watching.
Also this happens in cold season when thicken oil for few minutes at first start.. it is as a result of slow lubrication runs due to colleged vvt screen filters.. Please look around engine oil filler cap or the vvt both valves for 2 14mm flat head bolts , just open them and carefully remove n clean the screen filters with any non abrasive solvent.. and you have.. Yess you must then change the oil filter.. please use normal oil Non syntitec oil
@@diycheapdaddy2113 Ahmad is incorrect. You MUST use full synthetic engine oil. These 2ZR-FE engines take 0W-20 full synthetic oil. If you use non-synthetic oil, the cold start oil flow will be even worse. Synthetic oil flows easier than conventional oil. You want the oil to flow as fast as possible and pressurize the VVT system right away so that any noises last as short as possible each time you start the engine. Full synthetic 0W-20 flows the easiest and the fastest.
@@mannys9130 It makes sense and I used Mobil 1 5w-20 in summer and 0w-20 in winter. I will change it to 0w-20 all year round. Thanks for your advice. Thank you for your comments.
Just need new spark plugs and if possible new ignition coil. Also clean map sensor. Make sure you have a clear air filter. And by the way these Corolla were notorious for bad sprocket of intake camshaft. You probably need to replace them and new timing chain.
Hi sir! Very good video, u have to clean your trottel body ,and replace spark plug with denso iridium or better iridium TT! After this 2 thing to made u have to clean or replace PCV valve. Ad to your next oil change an additive from liquid moly like MoS2 or ceratec
Thanks for your comments. I was thinking the PCV too but I need to remove the intake manifold which is quite a lot of work, I may order the gasket first and prepare for it when the time comes. I used Liquid Moly 's Di-Jectron and Valve Clean but not MosS2 or Ceratec, I believed the LM's Valve Clean did make it run smoother but the mpg still not good, average 26/27 freeway and city combine. If city only it is 23-25 mpg, if freeway only, it is 30 mpg. It may be the PCV or old O2 sensor, however, the O2 sensor did not throw any Check Engine light code. I did clean the throttle body later on and recently change the iridium spark plug. the old iridium plugs still looks good; therefore, it is not spark plug issue. I also clean the MAS sensor. I am thinking issue may be on PCV or O2 sensor; however, no Check Engine Light codes so far. Thanks for your input 👍and thanks for watching.
Hi, Nick, Not sure , may be but for rough idle when stop, you may also want to clean your MAS sensor and the throttle. If it gets worse, you should get a Check Engine Light and you can scan the code after that. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching.
Mine is different and weird. I changed just the air filter along with adding some fuel cleaner and after driving for a while disconnecting battery and reconnecting, (saw that you can do that to reset the computers memory or something) and now the check engine light is off and no more lean code… idk I think I got lucky. Now my short term fuel trim is just about .6-1.8%. I think it should be close to zero to be balanced
Hi, Peter, May be. However, I am not sure where to get that O-ring and it seems like O-ring is ok because I did have a lot of resistance when I pushed that in and after it is inside, when I turned it, it is not that loose but that also can be a the reason. Thanks for the thought. I also got a new pairs made from Third Party (Brand is called ISUMO) but the resistance is on the minimum and the old ones are more within the range of specification. After installed the new one, I did not see any differences. I actually changed it back using the OEM. Thanks for your comment and thank you for watching.
Hi, Jonathan, I used Molly's lifter and later Lucas oil but the noise goes quieter but still there. I think it is related to some parts inside engine. Mechanic told me 185k is near the end of the engine. Thank you for your comments and thank you for watching.

I don't recall seeing any filter on the solenoid. On the solenoid inside the transmission, I did see there is a "Shield with holes" on it and you can clean up that way after you remove the solenoid. After some research, I believe my Corolla has a filter inside the engine; therefore, if I need to clean it, I have to open up the covered which is lot of work. The sound which you hear is from the timing chain tensioner it gets worn out with time and that makes this noise replace the tensioner to a brand new unit and your engine will sound like new again I had the same issue and it was due to lose timing chain coz the tensioner was bad and it wasn't putting sufficient tension on the chain which makes this noise whoever told you that this is the end of this engine is an idiot and has no clue about these engines these engines can go 400 to 500000miles if the oil is changed on time and maintenance items are done at the correct interval

Try cleaning the front and back of your throttle body. Also clean the maf sensor and see if that helps. Disconnect the battery first before you clean
