Northern Grandma(since long past) and still my dear old mum had/have this favoured descriptor for my footwear, given I am a devotee of the covered ankle.
Makes me want a Clodbuster from Hamleys.
So the story "The Terror" is someone describing anxiety before it became truly discovered.
I guess, if that's what general anxiety disorder is. Anxiety itself is normal and mundane, there's always been a word for it. Seems like I shouldn't have to explain this.

I read Horla one night when I was very young, whilst camping, and feeling feverish.. It stayed with me for a very, very long time..

The laughter in the diary story is wonderful.
A wonderful collection! All were fabulous, but The Terror was my favourite. You have an uncanny ability to sound very natural- like you are simply speaking and not at all as though you are reading- it makes for a marvellously immerse experience! Thanks again for all the work you two put into this!
Hmmm.....sorry to disagree. . His
voice is monotonous and flat most
of the time . Occasionally he throws in a rather unconvincing
attempt at sounding " dramatic " .
It's bearable in short bursts but an
hour of it is impossible to endure.
I can only assume you have never
heard similar readings by someone with even minimal theatrical experience ?
@@2msvalkyrie529 Don’t apologize for disagreeing. It’s personal preferences or tastes. I have heard many readings and I happen to enjoy HB’s very much. If you don’t, that’s fine. The wonderful thing about the internet is that it is *full* of options, so I am sure you will find something you enjoy and maybe put a smile on your face. I hope you find it.

You mix Diary of a Madman with the Horla, you can resurrect Vincent Price. Beware: If you perform this ritual, you have to watch the movie. Otherwise, a curse may fall upon you.
Vincent Price still lives in the shadows in the darkest hours before the dawn. Didn't you know?

For a moment I kept sight of the glow of his lantern, and heard the rustle of the wire as he laid it down after him; but the glow soon disappeared abruptly, as if a turn in the stone staircase had been encountered, and the sound died away almost as quickly. I was alone, yet bound to the unknown depths by those magic strands whose insulated surface lay green beneath the struggling beams of that waning crescent moon.

Horror does not need be full of unnecessary blood/gore to give you a chill, it fills you with something closer to disgust. There is nothing poetic about it, writers could learn alot from these older, well written stories. So much trash out there these days..
Yes, many writers today think gore and violence is an adequate substitute for writing ability.

I agree and that's why I love this channel so much. There's something about the somewhat archaic language and powers of description that can make a single awful implication more frightening than a buzzing chainsaw and limbs flopping onto the the floor - no disrespect intended to Leatherface of course. Still the old horror babble is more frightening. It flat-out killed Warren.

dude i just read a disry horror and the guy was constantly clarifying that he was not scared unless something scary happened and did not assume anything wacky.... think he was also like day 27: IM FREE day 28: curse this horrible place

Did anyone else feel bad when the guy from the first story killed the poor bird? Like its one thing to kill a man the done you or another wrong but a poor bird that just sings its little heart out and keeps you company...that just is not cool. But still a story can cause such a empathetic part and make you feel sorry for the bird.

Guy de Maupassant was an excellent story teller. Some of his tales are Shakespearian , universal, and terrible.

Most people would say hello and introduce themselves. Not jump up and piss their pants when a woman walks in the room behind them.Could’ve been anyone for all he knows. The story doesn’t make sense at times

These are weird stories. Seems he had a knack for leaving them feeling unfinished.
