Beginners guide to Autopilot and Radio Navigation in the Beechcraft Model 18 in MSFS

- A beginners guide to autopilot, and radio navigation in the Beechcraft Model 18 in Microsoft Flight Simulator - looking at heading mode, altitude hold, pitch mode, and following both GPS and VOR routes. I make a couple of small mistakes along the way but as ever they are instructive - there's always a lesson to be learned when exploring the functionality of an aircraft.

Interesting observation, after watching back what I did - the HDG mode on the panel in front of the pilot is overriden by the NAV mode switch behind the mixture levers. NAV mode will be followed with the HDG switch OFF.
Thank you for another wonderful presentation.....I really appreciate all the effort you put in....(I'm a 65 beginner).... Roger... Pembrokeshire
Best video I've seen explaining older aircraft with retro fit modern AP systems. I've been practicing this exact thing with several different aircraft the last 2 weekends. I'll be recommending this vid to others in my group as a training tool! Well done! Many thanks :-)
Once you have the localizer tuned in, I think you are suppose to turn the knob (on the right side) from nav or heading to LOC NORM which is second to the right. Nice video, explained things well. I like how you showed your error with the heading; Is a learning experience.
Yep - I need to do a video exploring the other options. There's a bit of ambiguity in the interface - if you toggle the various modes, it forces them to take effect.
Fantastic vid. You shone the light on the mystery that was this AP.
You're welcome :)
Just got the Xbox. Just got mSFS. Just got the Beech 18. Love this plane. Would love to have an Electra but this is just as good. This video really helped me fly this. Thanks.
Nice video, thanks. This plane has a few nuances against many retro fitted ones, so nice to have a concise, clear explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful, thanks! I just picked up this wonderful little plane and am excited to try out radio nav.
It's great fun
Extremely well done and informative. Thank you for the excellent work! 👏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely phenomenal!!.
Great tutorials. I have been searching for good content like this for a while. thanks.
You're very welcome!
Thanks you for this one....I was totally not using the autopilot correctly....it was driving me insane. I see now I was making a simple mistake. I love the Beech 18....when I was younger I use to fly in one with a good friend of mine who was a freight dog...I got tons of right seat time as a teenager. Never will forget that. Shortly after that, I got my license and IFR ticket. Thanks again!
Glad it helped!
Great video, thanks. Just bought this in the sale. Saved to my mfs folder for future reference
You're welcome :)
Awesome video Jonathan, just what I needed right now, thank you. 👍🏻
You're welcome!
Very informative - THX...
Thanks for watching!
Wonderfull tutorial. Thanks a lot.
You are welcome!
Wow, thanks for this. Really well explained.
Glad it was helpful!
Superb tutorial.
Thank you very much👍
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for this 👍
No problem 👍
whoa.. that is super interesting!
Thankyou :)
Excellent tutorial ! Which flight plan were you using , I mean the one showing the details, VOR, Radials and other important information?
It's "LittleNavMap".
Kudos to Carenado for this one!..
thank you so much Jonathan, I swear I have Done what you did for Nav mode to make her follow a flight plan but for some reason doesn't follow the magenta line, I will try again following step by step what you did here, thank you for the video
I've seen the same thing - you sometimes have to toggle it off and on again - the autopilot will follow the LAST switch you moved.
4:55 Autopilot
7:32 Flightplan
Cheers for that :)
This was extremely helpful! Are you still planning to make that follow up video for the other options? I'm eagerly waiting! :-)
When I get a chance :)
@@jonbeckett I certainly hope so :-)
I have found landing on this beast a little bit of a hit and miss sort of thing. Can you do a tutorial on landing which will look a lot like it is in real life.
It's a case of knowing the stall speed, your weight, and having a sense of how high off the ground you are. Just get it above the runway, then cut the throttle and let it settle onto the ground :)
@@jonbeckett Well, not a bad set of tips. I tried it and it went rather well. What irked me somewhat was the compulsive swing of the nose just when I thought speed had bled off sufficiently. I stayed on the runway nonetheless. Must be my rudder sensitivity there.
@@peterbassey9668 The more realistic the simulator, the more the aircraft is going to move around. The engine torque, wind on the tailplane, and many other factors are going to cause the plane to leap around - the days of being able to point a simulated plane in a direction and expect it to go there have gone :)
@@jonbeckett Oh what glorious days they were! Never mind me, Lol! I do get your point Jon and quite interestingly, I actually descended on the Beechcraft today grimly determined to land it well, and Lo each attempt was better and better. I’m slowly getting the hang of it.
Nice, a hairy approach!😉
Yeah - I rushed things just a bit :)
Would you mind telling me what program did you use to see the VORs on the AWC?
LittleNavMap.
@@jonbeckett thanks alot
Excellent video! I do have one question with the altitude hold mode of the AP though. Let's say I reach 3500 and want to stay there so I use the ALT mode, no problem. But if afterwards I use pitch to ascend to a higher altitude, say 5500 and try to use ALT mode again to remain at that altitude, the AP will actually attempt to get me back to the 3500 I had set before. Am I doing something wrong or is there a way around this? I expected it to work like the heading mode that snaps to the current heading when you turn it back on.
I'll have to check (I haven't been flying at all this week) :)
Great plane with terrific authentic radial rumble sound...just been playing with it myself and watching your great video. I did find that when I trimmed nose down direction (towards DN), the aircraft pitched up. I also noticed that your machine repsonds similarly. Is this is a bug in this SIM model, or am I interpreting the function incorrectly? Surely winding the trim towards nose down should result in nose down pitch???
Interesting - I'll make a note to check that next time I'm in the plane!
Great and informative video! This is one of my favourite airplanes together with a couple of others from the same era. A pity though that there is no documentation (performance, limitations, etc.). At least I can't find any. Do you, or anyone have any tips on avaiable documentation.
Just search online for the POH (Pilot Operating Handbook)
@@jonbeckett OK! Thanks
If clickling buttons is not working, use keybids to those buttons. Planes is quite bugged for the moment.
Do you mean like the engine start button? I've noticed that doesn't always trigger a first click.
Hi Jonathan Thanks so much for this video I have the same A/P in my Commander 114 but I am at loggerheads regarding how to do a full ILS landing hope you can so us how to use the other switches. Plus if i was to plan a IFR using VOR from airport to airport at what distance do i set the next live frq Cheers, Jeff
None of the GA aircraft can do a full ILS "auto-land". They only do approach at best, using GS (glideslope) lock, and/or VOR lock (sometimes called NAV mode too). You should get to a decision height - sometimes marked on a chart - and decide if you can land in low visibility conditions. Usually it's somewhere between 500ft AGL and 100ft AGL. At that point, you turn off the autopilot, and land manually.
@@jonbeckett Thank you i was just wonder what the LOC was on the dial
Nice tutorial, very helpful! I see you pinned a comment about this, but anyhow...
The HDG mode switched off when you changed from VLOC to GPS mode, not when you turned the dial to NAV.
I've figured it out now. The HDG switch doesn't really react to anything - you have to toggle the various modes to make them take effect (which kind of makes sense, given that the mode switch and GPS unit were retro-fitted).
I'm on the fence about this one because I can't think when I'd fly it. I'd have expected more noise from thumping great engines that close to the cockpit, what's it like in the sim before you balance it for youtube ? That takeoff looked quite interesting too, at the moment I'm still on the fence :)
The takeoff was all over the place because I didn't use the tail-wheel lock :) The sound definitely needs adjusting, but only the levels. I'm sure they will get to it. It's worth noting that I had FS Realistic running in the background, which modifies the sound a lot too.
FYI, you can open the windows, and it sounds very different and louder that way. They really rip.
So what role does the CDI instrument (right next to the altimeter) actually play and why does it never display anything for me?
It relates to the nav radio. Once tuned into ILS or a VOR station it will show your position relative to it.
@@jonbeckett aah, thanks!
Mine for whatever reason wont follow a Nav path with the appreciate settings switched on and GPS. Autopilot in general also seems a little temperamental in this plane. Could be user error on my part but don't think so. I end up hand flying this still good fun though.
I've never had a problem with it
@@jonbeckett Funny enough just had a flight and it behaved itself. Rather weird must be a bug somewhere.
How would you rate this aircraft? I’m on the fence about a new plane to get and I like the older ones. The only real issue I’ve seen that I have with this one is how squirrelly it gets on takeoff and landing
It's ok. It's nothing special. It really depends what sort of plane you like.
When engaging autopilot with landing light extended it dont work right. After retracting landing lights it start to work normaly..
Really? I'll have to try that :)
I am having this same issue. Initially thought it would break after alt tabbing, but this seems to be the problem
I cannot get HDG mode to work at all. I'm in HDG mode on the selector behind the mixtures and it leaves the wings but never tracks my hesding.
That's very odd. I wonder if you have any other add-ons that might be conflicting with it ?
ok, so I followed everything you did in here and I had a very pleasant short flight, but the next 3 attempts hell got loose, no nav, no heading, no altitude hold worked, just drop from the sky like a rock and in an attempt that maybe Asobo sees this, "HEAR THE VOICE of DESPERATION, DISCOURAGE and IMPOTENCE" 😂😅 this is the WORST autopilot in any aircraft I have ever seen so far, just paid $15 for a nice looking aircraft that I will be hand flying once in a while when I decide to take a 10 minute flight
Never tried to fly an IFR descent from cruise then an ILS approach in one of the Justflight Arrows huh ? :)
@@ceegnz never!
@@forthydollars The autopilot in the Arrows is a single axis, it only controls direction. There's a cheat 'alt hold' clickspot that will hold your current altitude but no way of controlling pitch. Vertical speed on the way up and down is controlled by you, your throttle, and your elevator trim. This one looks a bit quirky but will do everything you need for a GA touring plane.
@@ceegnz looks like it sucks same as this airplane, this airplane has everything for a short flight, for a long haul with this crappy autopilot, no way
The only quirk I have found with it is that you need to toggle the modes off and on to get them to take effect - which kind of makes sense, given that it's been retro-fitted with the GPS on top of the original switch panel (i.e. which switch should it listen to?). I played with it again yesterday during a flight around Yellowstone, and it performed absolutely predictably.
don't work auto pilot 🤔
It works fine for me. Perhaps join virtualflight.online, and then we can spend some time online at some point to help you out? :)
it is a flawed piece of work..nothing to do with history..it is lazy developers and msfs 2020 should not put up with it. i am not buying another piece from this developer.
You have to remember that these simulated aircraft are complex. Also - Asobo are stuck, because they have to cater for gamers and the sim crowd.
