    The check engine light ON is a new feature for 2023 , they want to make sure you get used to seeing the light because it will be there 90% of the time.

    I just want to see more options like this for the more mainstream brands. Heck this powertrain design could be pretty nice in a pickup truck and I think I’d like having that range and mpge more than what the projected Ramcharger will be delivering.

      I'd say the closest mainstream option is something like Jeep's 4xe system. Although there's less EV range it's also a lot less expensive. -Travis

    “GOOD LUCK” is pretty much the entire Range Rover customer experience, innit?
    But I’m still so disappointed that there isn’t a single decent PHEV that’s available and affordable in the US

    Great review Alex! I have a 23 RRS PHEV that you reviewed a few months earlier with the same powertrain. I have been very impressed with the EV range even in winter. I have averaged between 45-65 miles on pure EV battery. One of my favorite aspects is the seamless transition to the gas engine after the battery is depleted. You mentioned the change to a higher output motor on the 2024 models but there are some key differences between the 2. First, the new P550e models are not direct replacements for the P440e in 2023. They are replacements for the P510e model that we did not receive in the US. The direct replacement for the P440e is the P460e which is not offered in the US. Hence they decided to go with the higher output PHEV for US market Second, that change in the motor has led to a significant increase in price for both 24 PHEV models. The RRS PHEV went from 104k in 23 to 118k in 24 while the RR PHEV went from 106k in 23 to 141k in 24. One would think that the pure EV model will be north of 150k. Lastly, the 24 models have removed lots of physical controls to the infotainment screen and have been replaced with black plastic. What was a "sea" of black plastic is now an "ocean" of it. I think the 23 models will be seen as a good compromise of features and value moving forward. I'm happy with my purchase so far.

      @@Ignignot1 Good point. Granted it hasn't been THAT cold in the northeast this year, driving a cold battery and heated seats/steering wheel/climate control really kills range. The solution to this is preconditioning. Preconditioning alone also kills battery/range, easily 20% over 30 minutes. I tend to plug in while preconditioning and then drive away with a warm cabin and preserved range.

      X5 competes with the Range Rover Sport. R1S could be crossed shopped but I doubt it due to it being EV only.

      @@jtothada06 Alex himself literally compared the R1S to a Range Rover in his review. If you’re looking for a luxury off road-capable SUV with a plug, I’d say they’re pretty direct competitors.

    apparently the gloss black trim is lacquered wood and is a $1,300 option and I can't imagine spending that kinda money on something that looks the same as what's found in the center console of a versa

      I think Mercedes was the first to offer this abomination of a trim choice and indeed, it originally was lacquered wood. Hence the term "piano black". But then everyone figured out you could just do black plastic and replicate the look for 1/2 a percent of the price and now look where we are. LOL.

    Shopping for a PHEV in October, there were none of these on the west coast. Eventually, after I'd bought something else, 2 local dealers each had one, for which they wanted $20,000 over MSRP. No thanks. Also, after this runs out of juice, the MPG is pathetic. I ended up with a Lincoln Corsair GT III. Yes, only 27 miles of electric range, but yesterday driving with an empty battery from the Palos Verdes peninsula to Santa Ana I got 44 MPG, and the lowest MPG I've gotten in extended freeway driving at 75 was 35 MPG. I'm completely happy. Plus I paid Invoice and financed for 4 years at 0% interest rate.

    Too bad press cars (I'm guessing this is one) come in such a bland black interior color. Jags/Land Rover can have such beautiful interiors and unique colors. While I'm not pushing for some aggressive red, I think a beige interior shows more contrast and detail on the inside, especially if you get the light colored ceiling. Too many reviews that are just black interior make it looks like any other boring Audi interior.

    Impressive spec and design, but honestly this is more like a taste of what's to come with the eventual arrival of the Range Rover EV. That being said, while it is very sumptuous and has your typical Range Rover elegance & luxury, part of me thinks that the R1S has largely eclipsed this Range Rover PHEV version entirely in its powertrain department & challenging it for its long unique staple of being the "luxury off road adventure" vehicle of choice, at least in perception.

      The PHEV, especially with this much range, is still quite a good option. In the last 10 years I've owned a diesel SUV, two full BEV's and now a PHEV. Why did I "settle" on the PHEV? Because I live in a state with LONG journeys and not much charging infrastructure outside the metro areas. We do tend to do longer trips, especially in our SUV where having a full BEV would add probably 90-150 minutes of charging time for a one day trip, and closer to 3 hours on a 2 day trip. Our PHEV is rated at 30 miles of range and is now coming up on it's 10,000 mile service; of the 9,500 miles we have covered, nearly 6,800 of them have been in electric mode. That's a combo of full electric mode, or operating in hybrid mode. Also, our highways here are fast. Many are rated for 70 or even 75 MPH and the average travel speed is in the 80's. Not so good for EV efficiency. If, say, I still lived in the NE Metro corridor and drove up and down 95 where there are more charging locations? Yeah, different consideration. But when you're driving through an area where you might not see a gas station for 40 miles, good luck when you arrive at the one charger within 100 miles and it's offline / derated / taken.

    Nice review. You had the vegan interior which is why the steering wheel is not stitched. I am surprised by your db reading. Some reviewers have recorded 60db at similar speeds.

    Really great vehicle and I want one. Lots to go wrong with all the mini motors and annoying when manual would be fine. Bit pricey really.

    After owning a 2013 Rolls Royce Ghost and a 2018 Bentley Bentayga, I thought I had experienced the pinnacle of luxury and performance. However, my new 2024 Range Rover P550e has completely changed my perspective. The Range Rover P550e combines sophistication, cutting-edge technology, and unparalleled comfort in a way I never expected. Every drive feels like a revelation, and I can't help but think I should have met this incredible car sooner. It truly sets a new standard for luxury SUVs.

    It's truly mystifying how these are sold in the numbers they are. You would think very wealthy people would do a little research or pay someone to do it for them on how unbelievably easy these things break down . How does a vehicle that coset over 100k not have better mechanical engineering ? Year after year it never changes its amazing

    38.2 kW battery and only 51 miles. Whereas 100kw battery on an EV9 gives 270+ miles. Why does hybrids have lower EV range for such a big battery?

      Probably a bit worse in terms of aerodynamics, and likely the electric motor and battery setup is not as efficient nor is it able to provide any regen like a pure EV does.

      It’s carrying around a huge engine and gas tank that is dead weight when in EV mode. That’s why PHeVs are terribly inefficient

      @@DemonXplaid you could say that, but, in my PHEV I can run it in EV or gasoline, so I need to lug the extra weigh around. For the mission of my car, a PHEV does the job. 4.2 miles per kWh, and 48 mpg. The best part is the 630 mile range of the car.

      @@Qrail This phev is getting 1.3 mi/kwh. Most people dont plug in their phev daily. I did the math with a prius prime and the cost for electricity vs gas was essentially the same in my area. While it has certain use cases, I would either go hybrid (if charging is a problem) or go fully electric. A model Y is now cheaper than rav4 prime

    Hey Alex, I currently own 3 Jags right now; F-Pace Diesel, F-Pace SVR, and an F-Type R; the diesel needs a new DPF but other than that, all smokin' hot cars. We know Jags and Ranges are built by the same manufacturer but what I don't understand is WHY are Ranges ALWAYS in the shop! It's a cryin' shame that EVERY Range has continuous issues...

      Just had to ignore the check engine light. Assuming its just "gas cap". I don't think its that bad. I remember TFL's LR was able to drive 150miles or so before it broke. Yes they had to use 3 for the test series.

      I’ve put over 150k miles on mine. Not a thing has gone wrong. I know it’s possible though. But just a pleasure to drive. I have 6 autos to choose from each day. And the RR gets my daily driving because it drives better than anything I’ve ever driven.

      Bear in mind the motor is driving the wheels via a an 8-speed transmission and a full-time mechanical 4WD system with a 2-speed transfer case

    50 EV Miles with a 38 kWh battery? Really? with that battery, I would expect 80-100 miles. Even heavy EVs get about 2.5-3 miles per KWh.

      I think the 38kwh figure is total capacity as well, so usable capacity will be a bit less.

      Well, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV use to get 20 embarrassing miles from a 13.8 kWh battery. The new one gets 54 WLTP miles from a 20 kWh battery. Don’t know what the EPA miles will be but this car maker is not alone in being the trailing edge of EV tech.

      @@ltkwok Electrek says this is rated for 70 miles WLTP and has 31.8kwh usable. Of course it’s not going to be as efficient as smaller, lighter and potentially more aerodynamic vehicles. I think this weighs like 1000lbs or more than the Outlander and has a much more powerful (less efficient) inline 6 engine.

      Remember that 38 kWh is gross, usable we don’t know. But the real factor is that it’s a traditional drivetrain other than that, so the motor is driving a brick through the air via an 8-speed automatic and a full-time 4WD system with a locker in the back.

    Good review. A couple niggles from a long-term Range Rover owner, there is no short wheelbase RR, this is the standard wheelbase, with an optional long wheelbase. Also the long wheelbase is meant to be a chauffeured vehicle and is designed and sold accordingly worldwide, it is really only in the US market that it is actually sold mostly to owner-drivers. The standard wheelbase is plenty roomy in the back, I suspect most US owners of the LWB version are completely unaware that they have bought what is a limousine in most of the world, they just assume well it costs more this must be the ultimate trim level.
