- Kundry's mesmerizing seduction of Parsifal in Act 2 of the opera.
Waltraud Meier in her signature role as Kundry gives an electrifying performance of combined vocal and dramatic prowess for which there is little historical precedent.
PARSIFAL
Composed by Richard Wagner, 1882
Berlin State Opera, 1992
Kundry - Waltraud Meier
Parsifal - Poul Elming
Conducted by Daniel Barenboim
Staging by Harry Kupfer

Lucky those who got to see W. Meier live in her great wagnerian roles. The intensity of her acting, the colors in the singing, have no parallel. Also, on a more superficial note, how gratifying is it to watch such a stunningly beautiful woman acting and singing the hell out of these roles...One truly feels like he is watching Kundry the seductress (and the damned) here, she embodies the character completely.
Meier is simply incredible as is Barenboim's conducting Elming is inspired to perform at this high level. Musically this is transcendent
What a miracle of art! What brilliant staging, acting, singing and musical direction! Thank you all.
93! Excellent: moving and intense performance. The decor at least does not openly undermine the drama to make a political point, as sadly often happens. I used to find the orchestration of Act II a little tired compared to the glories of the Monsalvat in I and III, but now at last I see that as Drama it is more than their equal. Wonderful stuff, Der Meister himself should be well pleased with the players and orchestra (if not the set designer) for conveying so intensely the essence of this great Gnostic Work, the crown of Music-Drama. 93 93/93!
Kundry-Meier makes the scene hard to believe: no mortal would ever resist such attraction!
Well the makeup that makes her look white as a corpse doesn't help
I don't think it's the makeup. I think it's the harsh white overhead lighting.
One of the great scenes in all of opera. And as for Waltraud Meier. . . She is magnificent in everything she does.
Wagner is fascinating
14:20 Those brilliant, brilliant microexpressions!
The good Mrs M was in good voice, by golly. (Transl. DeepL).
superb!!! Meier is the queen of this character.... I've been fighting with myself on which DVD should I buy. This espectacular one or the latest one at the MET with amazing Katarina Dalayman!!! hard choice!
I saw Dalayman & Kaufmann at the MET and bought the DVD but the DVD sound is extremely disappointing. Rene Pape who sang Gurnemanz has a big resonating voice but sounds small on the DVD. But the visuals on the MET Opera production is WAY WAY WAY better than what I'm seeing in this video.
Es gibt so viele sagenhafte Kundrys: Varnay, Mödl, Callas, Ludwig, Jones to only mention a few
but Meier is in class in herself.....BRAVA
Amazing! We have subtitles! Is the whole play available?
Must see this and also The Ring cycle; with translation/subtitles
Quelle merveille !
True artistry - a sublime performance
J U S T M A G N I F I C E N T ! ! !
Elming was always a mediocre tenor that spoiled many Bayreuth productions in the 90s. At that time it was very, very difficult to find a decent wagnerian tenor anywhere, true, but I believe he could have done something else with his instrument. Meier is gorgeous as Kundry (and as anything she wanted to sing), it's a pity that she very rarely got a male partner at the same level.

Mediocre? Really? I always found him vocally and dramatically very effective. He partners Meier superbly in this scene.
absolutely stunning performance! There is no one who can do Kundry like Mrs Meier. Just heard her again @Vienna State Opera in this role after more than 20 years - her performance is still electrifying
Really as fine a Kundra you will see overall. There may be better in one aspect or another, but this is convincing as a portrayal. I Khushroo SUNTOOK
Quite an amazing performance in every respect. Singing, acting, everything...
Waltraud, amor sacro e profano in te mirabilmente fusi: ecco tu sei l'eterno femminile che in alto ci sospende!
the first part before the last entrance of the flower maidens is decent.. but the flower maidens entrance is pretty slow.
I just watched Parsifal on "Met on Demand" and she was born to sing this role. That production was lovely and her singing, if you can imagine, even better. And I have to admit a fondness for Siegfried Jerusalem and his "can-do" attitude.
Indeed, Barenboim set a masterly performance with Kupfer and the singers.
Waltraud Meier makes you love Kundry!!!
Simply the best Kundry ever.
+Yves Gerard Please point us to your favorite. We can then make our own judgment.
Parsifal was the father of Lohengrin
Beautiful...everything!!!!!
from PERSIA with Passion
wonderful. ;-) she reminds me of the Borg Queen in Star Trek.
who said only pop stars show nipple.. Amazing Waltraud.. so Artistic nudity, so beautifully done, so in complete harmony with the character.. wooow
*****
I agree with you at all you say.. Netrebko indeed was a sensational Lady M vocally.. my comment was exclusively about the weak costumes and project of Sexualism of Lady M that looked idiotic and cheap
*****
LohengrinTh If you think this is seductive, and sensual, check out her Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix with Domingo on the Tube. The photo shown there of herduring the aria is astonishing. Let's just admit she is a ravishing mezzo and almighty Teutonic beauty as well.
frank rella
what is the origin and the exact meaning of the term Teutonic beauty
Whenever I see comments such as some of the ones below (wishes for people to be shot and tortured, xenophobia, hidebound thinking and just complete idiocy), I really hate the opera audience. But the comments speak for themselves. Great Meier, great Kupfer as well.
They represent a tiny subset of the opera audience. With no friends in real life, they post their pathetic comments here. Pay them no mind.
Interesting interpretation of the Holy Grail.
I would have given her one.
This scene is marvelous in every possible way.
The preceding scene with the video monitors is decidedly not. Wagner must have turned over in his grave so many times that he has bored his way to the molten center of the earth by now (where, no doubt, some ring or other is being forged). But back to the video monitors: When most of us are toddlers we slowly learn that many, many ideas come into our heads, and that most of them are bad. Herr Kupfer apparently never learned that lesson.
ALL THAT HAVING BEEN SAID, the power of the scene in this video is scorching, elemental, nuclear. "Electrifying" would be far too weak a word.
I wonder what Bach, Telemann and countless other composers of the past would think of the primitive horrors of today's pop music. Not to mention the disagreable noises of the cultural Marxist output by Boulez, Messiaen etc.
OUTSTANDING VOICE MANY YEARS AGO I HEAR HER AT THE MET IN WAGNER'S PARSIFAL WHAT A VOICE AND THE MET'S PRODUCTION WAS ONE OF THE BEST STAGING EVER,LEVINE WAS CONDUCTING THAT NIGHT...I CAN STILL HEAR IT...
Amazing ! W.Meier and Maestro Barenboim ! Merci ! 👏🙏❤️🎼❤️
Another Eurotrash production but with glorious wonderful singing. Love Waltraud Meier! Elming is a great Parsifal.
lighting, set design, costumes - everything is artistic and deliberate and contemporary in its time, none is tacky or kitsch or a vulgar traditionalist pastiche. at your age, you really ought to stop applying petit-bourgeois and pedestrian standards of your own 'personal taste' to productions that aim much higher than that.
Waltraud Meier Thank you
AGUANTE PARCHIFLAL
a bizarre, repulsive and stupid sets and costumes--must be German as they seem intent on ruining their national music---luckily the music can't be wrecked.
why is set design ruining the music? the world envies germany for the artistic wealth and creative output of their national theaters and opera houses. nowhere else you can find such daring artistic productions that always strive to create new experiences in favour of tired pastiches and petit-bourgeois clichees.
MARAVILLOSO RECORDARLOS
Beautiful singing, though I'm not a fan of the production
Inconmensurable
17:09!
Indeed!
the stage as a darkroom
wagnmer is pure musical fantasy it does not mean anything clear he was a a crazy visionary
So powerful...
Since 6'45" untill 11'50 ... The perfection of Wagner lyrism ... Listen to Regine Crespin : same level of voices !
Who downvotes this?
Simply the best
Wie wundervoll
I saw this in Bayreuth, Meier was stunning.
I really appreciate for sharing video and others
Le jeu, comme le chant... Quelle interprétation magnifique... À couper le souffle.
Brilliance !!!
MAGNIFICA
I love her interpretation of "Ich sah das kind".
...is Poul Elming
Waltraud Meier was 26 years old here. it's unbelievable. one of the best Wagner performers.
She was 36
@@joelrodeback2145 even 36. same comment
Thumbs down, for the regie's crap done here.
It's a wonderful regie, Harry Kupfer is a master.
Waltraud ti amo!
anche io

Excelente 👋🙏👍🤣🥴
Marvelous singing by two great attists as Siegfried Jerusalem and Waltraud Meier!!!,BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John Schofield I think that's Paul Emling. If it's Jerusalem he has changed a lot including growing taller.
I like Emling very much here, but Meier less so. I hear a beat in her voice.
Patrick Boyle Thank you dear friend (he looked like Jerusalem to me, but when you mentioned Paul Emling, found out he looks quite similar...did not saw none of those in person, so don't know how tall they are).I tend to be be cautious about the sound in an artist like Mrs. Meier, because I heard her a lot into soprano and then mezzo, so I am little confussed about her vocal characteristics. In my own case (due to some good advise given by friends like you), I am trying to stay at the lyrico spinto roles, because my sound comes quite diferent in ligther roles (I felt too much effort and pushing in a ligther repertorie...which I made easy some 10 years ago. Now recently, I almost lost my voice by trying...also was ill those march recitals, which made all worst, uuugggh!!).
Always looking foward for your comments and advise. Saludos desde Lima, Perú. John
Thank you very much; I agree with you (did not knew her background as a soprano in her beginnings); I am myself, a spinto tenor who is always atching and analysing singers as Mrs. Meier (always in the search of learning and improving my own singing). So never tried to be so inquisitive in any collegue; specially great ones as her (I am a humble singer; know I am not the best, but I always try to be at least informed). Thak you again for yourgreat friendly analysis and data about her. I remain of yours sincerely. Muchas gracias. Saludos. John Schofield (I will look for the video or registration you mentioned; Wagner repertorie is very good for my voice...but have little chances to be hire for those...sadly they are too expensive and italian repertorie is more "marketable" in this days!!!).
John Schofield John as I remember you are in South America - right? Actually in America Wagner draws some very loyal fans. If you mount a production of some standard Italian opera like Traviata you may get a audience or you may not. But if you put on Rheingold I guarantee the Wagnerites will fly in from everywhere. Of course Rheingold is a bit harder to cast that Traviata but people really do want to see it. Talk to your local opera companies.
Patrick Boyle dear Patrick I tend to think like you.We can try stage one of Wagner's operas and see resultd ( even if we can put a 40-50 reduced orchestra and a couple of international 'reinforcements',we still need some support of that American Wagner Societies...do you know some?, please let me know).
I was trained to sing Manrico at Il Trovatore and will try soon to stage it again(I was ill for some years;but now again in good health...my voice is comming back again!!!).Found very good support also (very good organizations, singers and musicians)in Panama and Costa Rica; actually we are singing a Cavalleria in all three countries in oct-nov 2015(Peru,Panama and Costa Rica). If you can help us,I will propouse this great idea (never at least in Peru,a Wagner opera has been presented...staged or not!!!).Saludos y gracias!!!John
Absolutely decadent interior decoration!
-sexy sexy sexy-
In which language they sing? Anybody know?
German.
Grazie!
Yes, i agree.. was so hard but no words get in my ears even consonants. But god its such a great work!
GERMAN !!!!

Any suggestions?
