Charlamagne Tha God: Harness Your Superpowers

  • Charlamagne Tha God (The Breakfast Club radio show, Comedy Central’s Hell of a Week, bestselling author, philanthropist) discusses his journey to discovering his true self apart from his famous radio persona, how CBT therapy taught him to unlearn, and his positive and frightening encounters with the spirit realm. He opens up about his history of panic attacks, the vigilance he developed while selling drugs, and how anxiety can sometimes be his superpower. Charlamagne details growing up Jehovah’s Witness, why he believes God is a woman, and the origins of his dark sense of humor. He explains why he uses his authentic, unapologetic voice to touch on touchy subjects, especially around mental health gaps in the Black community, including the intergenerational trauma and institutional racism that can prevent minorities from seeking support. Mayim and Charlamagne consider anxiety around returning to our hometowns and bond over their love for Marvel comics and Judy Blume books.

Jonathan talking about going home and feeling like you have to be the version of yourself they used to know. I felt that way every time I came home to visit for the 9 years I lived across the country. Now that I've been living at home (right back to my childhood bedroom) for about a year, I can't help but feel that way at least a little every day. I spent my 20's healing & it's hard to show my family that 32 year old me is not the same 22 year old that moved out.

Jonathan, that was such a nice observation to say that Charlemagne Tha God's superpower is keeping things calm, while speaking his truth and holding his space. At the start of the show he had no idea who you were. Your superpower is being able to listen well, and engage any guest one on one, calmly and intelligently, no matter who they are.

What an interesting unknown (to me) person! I’ll buy his book ab anxiety after watching this episode. Btw, Dr. Shefali’s THE RADICAL AWAKENING dedicated by Mayim I “won” on one of MBB give away & that was my best birthday gift, is an EXCEPTIONAL one! As Michael Singers ones I read in Spanish, Steve Leder’s “The beauty of what remains”, or Dr. B’s both ones, or..LOL! I’ll need new shelves & space on my Mac to read all books recommended here!
As a woman, I love when Charlemagne speaks about God beeing a woman, though I, as my agnostic grandad used to say, think that “if you can understand and explain Him, is not God”. Thank you MB & JC for this (my) one and only podcast! You make my life better! And that is precious and priceless!

I thought I'd listened to all the episodes and today, just thank you. I was obviously meant to hear this today. My son struggled with anxiety his whole short life. I tried to get him therapy but he was still struggling with trying to self medicate. He given up alcohol but was substituting what ever drug a friend had on hand. He was really trying to stay sober for his young son. But at 28 he died 4 years ago today of what was probably a cocktail of whatever drug he could lay his hands on to calm his mind after work. It helped him sleep and he just never woke up. This has been the hardest year yet for some reason. But this was a beautiful helpful episode. I listened on Spotify, now I'll watch it again on you tube. And then on to his books. My heart thanks you.

I never thought about that before, that a child is a different person,,looking at the world differently, at every first day of a school year.. When Charlemagne the God said he felt panicky the first day of first grade, but didn't remember feeling that in kindergarten. We can't expect our kids to be ok with school just because they may have already attended there before. Each year brings new worries as they get older. I could relate to not knowing kids as I didn't go to kindergarten so when my mom sent me on the bus to first grade I had no familiarity with the kids, the building or the experience. Those things leave their mark in our memories and on our cell memory that gets triggered in the future by similar experiences.

So many cool things about this interview! I’d never heard of Charlemagne tha God before this episode, and now I can’t wait to listen to his show and read the books he’s written. I was also raised in the same faith he was, and while I consider my experiences traumatic and “culty”, it was refreshing to hear him be really so upbeat and positive about how he loves Christmas AND he appreciates how his parents raised him with a spiritual awareness. There’s high notes and low notes to being raised JW, like anything else in life really - what we learn and take with us from all those experiences is really up to us to make the most of. Clearly, Charlemagne has that life skill perfected. I really love his energy and uninhibited self expression, and I agree you both about how awesome he is. Jonathan called it out perfectly though - Charlemagne tha God is an energy magician…alchemist…wizard…? Maybe energy MARVEL is a good way to encapsulate what he brought to this interview. However anyone says it - the man has a contagious magnetism and I’m so glad I got to listen to this interview today.

Cancel culture is rooted in religions. 😂 I was "cancled" for getting divorced, no one cares that it wasn't a healthy relationship. Or a positive environment to raise a family. Then your church family turns their back on you. God never would -

This was such a good interview. I agree with them that Charlemagne has the super power of being able to speak the truth, hold space through other's strong reactions, and de-escalate tense situations by making people laugh yet still stay serious about the discussion.
53:00 THAT PART. I need to make a short clip of that and send it to people whenever I don't want to go somewhere.

I love the honesty about his belief in intelligent design, a concept many scientists, if they are honest, come to agree with.
I think he then offers a good example of a mistake all of us make at some point of projecting a self-centric, man-shaped box onto God and attempting the explain His edges into it. An understandable error, a byproduct of the reality of our very limited understanding, especially as compared to His/Her infinite knowledge.
I could be wrong, but I would guess that by definition God has no gender, or is all genders, or both, whatever. I heard and believe God is love. Enough said.
Well, except, thank God for that. Love is the sunshine that illuminates, warms and melts every dark, cold, temote hard thing. It's so so good.
But it's a cool idea. I like to help knock down the old white man in the sky image in my mind by reminding myself that God is an older Asian woman. He is al the people He created in His own image, and THEN some, right.

Speaking of growing up in the 90s…take a trip down that road sometime! Every. Single. Show!…day, night, Saturday AM…sexual innuendos! Age appropriate. Age INappropriate. Dumbing down of women (of the Nickelodeon dads sort). The difference?… it’s not fluffed up with stupid a** PC terminology created to make others comfortable. It’s straight damn forward. Gross.
I just have to say that a common thread in serial killers is also a neglectful, absent, or abusive mother. Again…the importance of the loving connections w mom as discussed today.
    Love you guys.

As a white Boomer-generation, Jewish back ground, New York raised lesbian, I am so in favor of as much media, as possible ( whether, books, video, etc) that not only speaks to Black folks, speaking within their community to each other, but that brings (as much as one can) the full spectrum of experience/history to white folks. We must as a society come to grips with our past, in order to heal, bring equity, and synthesize a path forward for the USA. And it angers, frightens, and disgusts me, when I see/hear of so many white parents/ school boards/ communities denying our country’s past, under the guise of “well, we don’t want to make our kids feel terrible, and teaching CRT, (aka real USA history). So, it’s really wonderful that these books are out there, perhaps it can expand into an interactive series in and of itself.

Religion is authoritarian, and authoritarians are controlling. Between men and women, men set the emotional tone/vibe socially, and women reciprocate what men present to them. The tone is mostly authoritarian. What is one thing authoritarian men want control over the most? Women.
What is the exact opposite of a controlling attitude? Humility, honesty, respect, and non-violence. Having a controlling attitude is the ABSENCE of developing character towards women socially for purposes of mating and sex. So what is the purpose of religion? To appear Godly and spiritual socially WITHOUT developing character within.
With authoritarianism, ALL MEN BLAME WOMEN for dishonesty socially. Kind of mean, f*cked up, and manipulative, don’t you think? Considering men are physically bigger in frame, physically aggressive (violent), angry (authoritarian) all the time, and overall control the tone/vibe of how men and women interact socially.
Why is almost all violence and machismo in some way or another affiliated religion? It’s not hard to see the truth: to get rid of religion socially worldwide is to also get rid of amorality, indifference, conformity, authoritarianism, and violence towards women.
All war, ultimately, has to do with control over women by authoritarian (lying) men.
God is love, and love is a collective consciousness filled with humility and honesty, and an absence of a violent, central authority.
Only “alpha” males focus on religion. They are the most manipulative, materialistic, and conniving of men, as well as the most violent. Not all alphas are religious, but almost all religious men are alpha (authoritarian).
Evolved men are too honest for religion or atheism. They focus on telepathy. The only way to focus on telepathy is to be honest and humble socially.
Men focusing on the spiritual focus on spirituality NOW, which is telepathy. They do not wait to form spiritual personalities until after death (religion), and then play head games in the material with money, weight training, martial arts, and anger.
No one cares about religion at all. People only care that life after death is real and that telepathy is real.
Religion is a head game. It is shallow. It is corny.
