Trust me, I hate the title too.
Have you ever wondered how an Nth Review comes together? This is the hecking moment where I spill my guts on how it all comes together! From conception to completion, I detail all of the steps in-between.

A lot of people won't care about this video for various reasons, but I super appreciate it. The information is insanely helpful (e.g. Running out of steam at the end of sentences), and it's obvious you spent a ton of time and effort into making it. Thanks fam
Glad it was helpful!
Can't believe this doesn't have 100k views already. Solid video, thank you.
I have yet to finish making a single video essay, but it pleases me that I did a bunch of things like you do already.
One thing I do a bit differently is that when I'm writing the outline, and have ideas for some jokes or specific sentences, I write them down under the separate sections (potential visual cues/gags, potential jokes, etc), just so that i can offload it from my brain and not worry whether it's good or not.
Just found you through the algorithm, i do not understand why you are so underground. Love your stuff keep it up man. Wish you the best.
Thank you!
It's always interesting to find out more about the creative process of a great youtuber, this channel will grow bigger and bigger, can't wait for more videos :)
I appreciate that!
The start of the Taco Salad budget lol… Also thanks for the nice listening experience!
lol, yesssssss
re the end of the video, i made it all the way through and am actually watching this almost a year in the future.
shout out quake dad for the rec!
One other tip is when something happens in game stop and start the recording. It will have a recording cutt allowing for fast access to that clip.
Have a literal notebook while playing. Proably a great resource to have.
Yes, TubeBuddy or whatever is mostly useless.
Lastly. I still have no idea how any of this works and every time I hear someone talk about it, it gets me more confused.
This is the perfect video i needed to start my journey in long video essays. Thank you sir ❤ you're doing the good work 👍
All the best!
Amazing, thank you very much! Both insightful and inspiring.
You are very welcome
Insightful and instructive, I love it! 🤘
Cheers!
Thanks for all guidance! Love your work
Thank you!
Amazing video, very insightful!
Thank you! Glad it was informative for people.
I appreciate you sharing your process and taking the time to discuss your inspiration for creating your own reviews. I grew up reading and collecting issues of GameInformer magazines. I would scour them and read every word of the reviews and guides and whatever else was in them, then go seek out the featured games. Then I would purchase a physical copy and read the whole box and the handbook that came printed in it. All of that lead up would really benefit my experience with games, I feel like it helped me appreciate all the little details and all the hours developers worked on them. Nowadays things feel different, faster. There’s no more preamble to the gaming process, it’s just instantly stream a game from a massive library. Which is awesome, obviously, but I find it easier to get burned out, because I can’t take the time to really get to know one of the games, I just blaze through a handful of them at once and connect with them on a surface level. Anyways, I appreciate your work, keep it up! You’re great to listen to while I’m at work!
Thank you!!
Thank you for making this good Sir, it was very helpful and inspiring to me. 2 years is a long time to not feel rewarded, respect for your will power and mental clarity.
Appreciate it!
New follower, been listening to your stuff while editing for my day job. Order so far has been outer worlds, Prey (Arkane), prey 2006, then this one - interestingly enough. Up next today is probably Deus Ex. Fantastic content by the way.
Thank you!
Nice video sir ❤
This was excellent; 4 pages of notes.
Wanted to ask; what do you do to reduce the echo in your audio?
Also; when it comes to your streams; where do you do it, and would you consider UA-cam streaming?
You reduce echo by not allowing it to happen in the first place lol. I had to reorient my desk so I was against my wall (as you see in this video) on one side and my monitors on the other. You have to reduce how far sound travels and then what it does when it gets there.
I streamed on UA-cam and Twitch and each have their pros and cons, but I would usually use Restream.io to do both.
@@NthReview Thanks for the feedback; similar approach to that echo haha I blame the damn tiles in my room.
Also cool to hear about the streams; looking forward to the next one
Thank you. I have been thinking of making one myself just for fun but it's kinda intimidating since I have no experience. But I always got bored writing scripts for 10 minute videos since theres basically no room for actual nuance etc.
Give yourself time to think and write down everything that comes to mind, then let it assemble together in your head. It's not the length, it's what you do with it ;)

Hey there Nick. Hope all is well!
What's up, duder?!
@@NthReview Nothing too much, I have giant arms now! Nothing much to do out here but gym and study for license. For fun I have a few cooking videos. I'm nowhere near fast food... or people... so yay learning how to make everything from scratch!
@@frozenfreezerbirb1421 I can't quite make out who you are from your tiny avatar and you're not in your videos!
@@NthReview it’s Sam
@@frozenfreezerbirb1421 Oh rock on dude! Don't forget leg day!
watch out nth review there is a new coloradan game reviewer who hasnt posted a single video only concepts (jokes aside this advice is helping me a crap ton)
Good luck!
thanks man just starting to really focus on my dishonored review and seeing you has been a huge inspiration and the main push into making these longer and better videos
@@XxAkiXx42 make a video at a length that makes sense, never feel pressured to go longer than you need to
So this one doesn't count. Guess I'll watch it twice ;-)
Thanks.
Oops. I skipped the ads. I won't skip on the second go.
Yay!
Kinda weird that you didn't have new video coming out recently... Or even 100k subscribers at least. Considering your level of editing and voiceovers subpars of channels like hbomberguy and Tehsnakerer (go check him out if that's a new name for you)
Thanks! Some day… the more Paterson supporters and people who share this channel, the better the odds!
@@NthReview Man, thank you so much for the reply. I'll spread the words of The Nth Review, and until then, there's better be new game review video for them new watchers 😁
@@frds_skce it’s coming….
Did you share your videos anywhere when you had no following? I kinda feel like my video would just get 0 viewers since I would upload it to a new channel. But maybe the youtube algorithm is better than I imagine. To be clear I dont care about getting a lot of views... but I do care about getting any views haha.
I did, but it was a lot harder to get the word out when I had, y'know, 5 subscribers lol. Posting to the Watch_Dogs subreddit, or any subreddit in those early days, was an easy way to get downvoted to oblivion. It was really tough in those early days and for the reasons I mentioned here, I didn't get any algorithmic lift either.
Ive found sharing in Discords and Reddits has really helped bleed some traffic my way
@@HighFunctioningMedium It is such a crapshoot that you may as well be standing outside your local c-store with business cards with QR codes hoping they just watch your video essay about .
@@NthReview ill take a minimal amount of effort for any slight push forward anyday, at least at my current size
@@NthReview this is very true. I had tried for about a year to run an informative podcast and the occasional review/retrospective but like you said, people hate self promotion even when it is half decent content.
Love listening to your videos and appreciate this behind the scenes look

also, subscribed and liked. thank you!
No, thank you!
@@NthReview thank you for your thank you) your thief video is awesome. i was so glad to see a fellow TAFFER and stealth appreciator in the almost empty vastness of the internets. ive played golden age when i was in early teens in 2001 i guess and this game really changed my perception of gaming. can say, today this type of games is, imo, considered snubbish, not for everyone, underground etc - of course, with quotemarks - but it really was a golden age of gaming and sorta coming of age experience for me. once youve dug thief games - i mean, original, golden age and the thi3f, its hard to find anything comparable in the medium of pc games. a forbidden knowledge, that makes other games feel like too shallow. maybe it takes out a lot of pleasure from my personal experience with gaming since then, but im glad ive got this counterfeit cd in the underground railway kiosk in the saint petersburg, its like to watch classic movie. everything is more like superman after that. damn, i miss the stealth action!..
