  • Hello and welcome to Portugal on a shoestring. We are Brian and Diane and in 2023 we bought a 120 year old abandoned property in central Portugal. Join us as we begin a new life, renovating our house and managing our land on a shoestring budget. Watch as we learn new skills, make mistakes and discover our new home.
    We welcome any and all questions and suggestions. One thing that we found difficult in our preparations for moving to Portugal was finding our about costs and processes, so we would like to be as open as possible and will try to answer your questions as honestly and openly as possible.
    huggy112@yahoo.co.uk
    On this week's video we finally get the floor laid and grouted, did we make the right decision with the tiles? e also had a wander round the market at Figueiro dos Vinhos which is about fifteen minutes from our house.
    We hope you enjoy and hope to hear from you all soon with all your very welcome and interesting comments, questions and suggestions

    Thank you for showing us the tile cutter! No dust or expensive machine needed!! Labeling the tile and floor is such a great idea! You’re given me hope that I can retile my bathroom! Thank you for teaching us how to tile! It looks amazing!! I hope your wife enjoys Wimbledon . 😊🎾🌸🌺

      You are so welcome! Go for it. You don't need to get a cutter as big as mine though. You can get smaller ones which are ideal for tiles up to about 300 mm for around €20. I only got such a large one because upcoming tiling projects will be using 600mm tiles 🙂

    You've done an amazing job in such a short time and the kitchen is looking fantastic. Mad skills on the tile job! You must be so proud of the new life you're creating. I was so excited to see the market. We've purchased a property in Figueiro dos Vinhos and will be retiring there full time in 6 months. We've been so busy during our trips to Portugal that we haven't made it to the market and it was a real treat to have a tour. We enjoyed every minute of this video and watched the market trip a few times already. You must be somewhere close to us and hopefully we can connect when we arrive. The very best of luck to you both. 😊

      Hi thanks for the reply. I'll most likely be wanting building materials prices. Where abouts are you near. I'm going to be near a place called Fratel,

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  Місяць тому

      Fratel is quite a way from us, we are about halfway between figueiro dos vinhos and Ansiao. You are quite lucky to be fairly close to maxmat. I have found them to be among the cheapest of the big DIY stores here. They have a website www.maxmat.pt the other big one is Leroy Merlin and they are similar to B&Q. They have a website and also an app you can download. There is another called bricomarche but they are a little smaller and don't seem to carry as much range. These are all probably the easiest to use but for normal building materials, sand cement, blocks etc you may find a local materials de construcao is better. 🙂

    • @greencheek4561
      @greencheek4561 Місяць тому +1

      Thanks I'll look at the websites. I don't think there's going to be a great difference in prices from the UK. Some things probably a bit dearer and some cheaper,

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  Місяць тому

      As a quick example sand/aggregate from a local yard is about €20 per cubic metre. Cement €4 per 25kg bag. Plasterboard €12 2500*1200*12.5mm. timber is horrendous price, 50*50*2.5m is over €10. No one use 3*2 or 4*2 because of cost, it is all metal studwork or tijolo(hollow brick) for internal walls. OSB isn't too bad, I got 19mm 2.5*1.25m for €31 per sheet👍😁

    The tiling was a good job, but it's heart warming to see that traditional local municipal markets still exist in Europe, with stalls selling all types of goods, but with a focus on locally-grown products.
    Here, in the south of the UK, these trader markets all disappeared decades ago.

      I agree re the pullets squashed in crates😢 I'm m sure RSPCA , Portugal, have inspectors checking. There were lovely hens with space in the end crate. I would hv bought the lot. They make great pets, all characters and reward you with bright yellow eggs! I loved my hens so much, I turned vegetarian 36 yrs ago. Never regretted it. We are spoilt for choice!

    Hi guys,just found your vids.at last! Someone who actually tells it how it is.ive been to Portugal looking,like you did,unfortunately Portugal finished the nhr.can you tell me the tax liability on your uk passive income

  • @michaelharfield2622
    @michaelharfield2622 Місяць тому +2

    Sorry,that sounded too inquisitive.what I meant was my tax liability seems prohibitive.is there a way round it

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  Місяць тому +1

      Portugal didn't actually scrap the NHR, but they did put quite a few restrictions on the types of income that qualify for it. However, they have just announced that they are looking at reinstating it as it was, in order to encourage inward immigration and investment. We started the process of applying for our visas in 2023 so we are still eligible for the old scheme. We are liable for standard income tax in the UK because our income is from property rental and once we are full tax residents here and are on the NHR we will have no tax liability in Portugal. Otherwise it I believe it is around 28% on everything over your allowance (around €4,000 I think) minus any tax you have paid to UK inland revenue. Please take any of these figures with a pinch of salt as I am definitely not a tax accountant and are only the amounts I have been told about by others, not from any official source. Have a chat with a tax accountant and they will be able to give you an accurate assessment. Good luck and if there's anything else please ask👍

      @Portugalonashoestring  Місяць тому

      I advise everyone to use a guard on an angle grinder. It is a personal choice, which I accept is more hazardous, but I prefer the improved visibility of not using a guard. Thank you for your concern though 🙂

    Are the fruit trees expensive?

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  Місяць тому +1

      Tree prices depend on what they are and how old but bare rooted trees about 3 years old seem to be around €5-7 and potted trees about the same age €11-16 each.
