In nuclear reactors there's things called control rods, which are inserted between the fissive material (uranium/plutonium/etc) to control/reduce the rate of fission. The fins on Godzilla's back in this version eject like control rods being removed, and then his radioactive heat ray charges, before slamming them back in and expelling the excess radiation. It's such a cool little detail.

Everyone criticizes Noriko for her reaction, but misses the cut right after shes blown away that shows how everything was flattened almost instantly. Everything else we see was slowed for cinematic purposes, but Noriko literally had a split second reaction to a nuke exploding a few blocks away.

It's not made clear in the movie, but in regard to Godzilla's "beef" with humans, I believe the director said the reason is that it was our nuclear bombs that turned Godzilla into the giant monster he is.
This change in his anatomy causes him to live in constant, severe pain that he can never escape. Also, being the reason he walks like a robot, each step hurts. He's pissed at humans for doing this to him and wants to inflict as much pain on humans as he can.
He's a victim of humans and taking revenge. It's very much like the original 1954 movie. So, as much as we root for his demise, he is suffering as much as anyone else in the movie.

Here's a bit of trivia, during production of the first Godzilla film that came out in 1954, the producer of the film, Tomoyuki Tanaka named the monster right after one of his employees at Toho the company that made Godzilla and his nickname of Gojira. Which is a combination of the Japanese words gorilla and whale. And that roar was created by a leather glove rubbing against a double-bassed instrument.

    • @LiveFromThePorcelainPalace

This was the best film of 2023 for me!
30:00 - Unfortunatelly, no. It is a split-second decision. There have been quite a few documentaries explaining what happens when an atomic bomb is detonaded. In the film they slowed it down...it is really terrifying!

  • @agresticumbra

LOL they didn't pinch the little girl. It took a long time to get footage of her doing certain things, because she's obviously not acting, just being herself. 🤓
What you saw with the fish was their innards popping out, due to rapid ascent. The gases in their bodies expanded due to the quick decompression. One can assume that's what gave Noda the idea for stopping Gojira.
Also, the folks on the boats are saluting Gojira, not Shikashima. They basically defeated a deity, and formidable foe, worthy of respect.

  • @Fauxknight
    @Fauxknight 6 місяців тому +7

Godzilla is the embodiment or personification of nuclear power, and was even created shortly after WWII to the point. This particular version hits it precisely with US nuclear bombs creating him and is very on the nose with his trademark atomic breath actually creating nuclear explosions.
Godzilla is always depicted with the atomic breath, the regen is kind of hit or miss in some movies. He's generally assumed to be able to regenerate, but this is one of the strongest representations of it.

So Godzilla Minus 1 is a new film but also a retelling of the original 1954 film.
Godzilla was originally created by Toho studios, a Japanese film company. But recently Hollywood has been making American versions, the ones you're seeing with Kong and the other monsters, known as the Monsterverse.
Minus 1 has nothing to do with those versions. it's a stand alone film.

  • @AlexanderAddams

Everyone asks what Godzilla is. Godzilla is a representation of Nuclear War. Destruction. Chaos. That's it. That's why it comes to cities. It doesn't matter if you are a soldier, civilian, politician, etc. When the bomb goes off, everyone dies.

When the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki the explosion seeded the clouds and caused a Black Rain(Kuroi Ame) to fall shortly after. That rain, filled with radioactive particulates coated everything. Because homes and infrastructure were destroyed survivors could not change clothes so those particulates remained on them. With few sources of running water people boiled what they could find to drink, but the Black Rain had washed into the water they found and unknown to them boiling would not remove the radioactive particulates. So that rain that falls after Godzilla strikes with the nuclear breath has very deep significance in Japan as detailed in a 1965 novel named Black Rain. The book was made into a Japanese film in 1989 but it was overshadowed in the US by Ridley Scott's film of the same name, which also came out that year, about two American Cops who go to Japan and become embroiled in a case when the prisoner they were extraditing to Japan escapes.

Awesome video! Some quick clarifications and background (I've made my own video about this movie due to being a massive goji fan lmao):
    1. Not every movie takes place in the same universe. This film has nothing to do with any of the other movies (canonically speaking) and is a standalone story.
    2. Across all the movies, Godzilla's origins were never that he was once a human being experimented on. He's always been just a really big lizard; the reason he looks kinda human in proportions is because of the suits the actors needed to wear back in the day. The look just kinda stuck lol
    3. The original 1954 movie (simply titled "Gojira," the name Godzilla is an American invention) was created as a social commentary about the horrors of nuclear weaponry, something the Japanese people were all too familiar with after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki only 9 years prior. This is reflected within Godzilla himself, who was an undiscovered deep sea creature mutated by American nuclear tests in the Pacific that actually did happen (as you can see, Minus One also went with that part of the original story). The dirty "Castle Bravo" bomb in 1954 specifically went horribly wrong and would've been covered up for years by the USA, had a Japanese fishing boat not been sailing nearby and its crew returned with horrible radiation poisoning. That event directly inspired the Gojira film.
    4. Godzilla's abilities vary depending on the filmmakers' interpretations, but they are always nuclear in nature and almost always includes his signature "atomic breath." Most films also make the point that Godzilla heavily irradiates his surroundings wherever he goes, since he's supposed to represent a walking nuclear holocaust. His design reflects this; his craggly skin is directly based on the radiation injuries suffered by those who weren't immediately killed by the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It was the National Diet Building that Godzilla landed in Ginza and attacked with his atomic breath. It has long been believed that Godzilla is a "Tatari Gami" (God of Curses/God of Wrath), a gathering of the souls of people who died in war, and it is thought that this is why he targets the National Diet Building in Tokyo, the political center. The radioactive light that appears when Godzilla collapses into the sea can be interpreted as the souls of those who died in battle. Godzilla is also associated with the perspective of being a victim of radiation and war, and it is said that this is the reason why everyone saluted at the end.

Opening scene is the pride of Japan, the Zero Japanese Fighter. Sirens sound as the line, " Is that a new Yankee weapon?", is asked. Answer is Yes, to the tune of 300 long range B29 Bombers & thousands of newly developed Incendiary bombs, Napalm. That rained fire on the civilians of Tokyo in March 1945. The premise of the movie is the survivors of the "Tokyo Fire Bombing on March 10th, 1945". Mankind's worst, had more casualties & lost in history to the Hiroshima Bomb. The "Black Market" scene with Tokyo's venders, prostitutes & hustlers, that introduced Noriko & Akiko to Koichi is brilliant. The date March 1946, marking the one year anniversary of the "Tokyo Fire Bombing", it's heavily raining outside. Ironically Koichi is drenched in water instead of fire. As he shares good news of finding steady work. The sudden bombing of Godzilla by the "Takao" is ironic as the Takao was involved in the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.
On March 10th 2024, on the 79th anniversary of the "Tokyo Fire Bombing", Takashi Yamazaki & Crew is awarded the Oscar in Hollywood California. Takashi Yamazaki tells a great Japanese WII story using the great Japanese monster "Gojira", that the world wouldn't be interested in anyway. The pairing of Harley Davidson Motorcycle, Koichi's Motorcycle, and the Japanese Imperial Army was a surprising discovery. Among many others. The last line, Noriko looks to the side of the camera and says, "Is your war.........now finally over?"
I read in Japan, theaters after the movie, people applauded.

Alright so Godzilla’s been around for 70 years with 38 movies in total. Godzilla started in 1954 and was a metaphor for bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII. After a few movies though Godzilla evolved into more of an anti-hero batting more evil monsters. Godzilla’s “laser beam” is his signature atomic breath which he uses in every movie, it just been shown different throughout some movies and the effect it has. Godzilla started out as a threat to humanity but would morphed into more of an anti-hero then they would flip flop him and tell different stories. It’s all fun to enjoy
