Based on Balaoo by Gaston Leroux. Reminiscent of The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells, Murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allen Poe, and Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. About the 19th century was an interesting time for literature. Detective & Horror were really developing. The Fantasy/Science Fiction of psychology was also developing.

Manchester UK born actor, George Zucco plays Dr Renault.
Sinister portrayal, as usual. He played an American 5th columnist Nazi in Sherlock Holmes in Washington with Basil Rathbone. Lynne Roberts [the bride to be] is an actress I hadn't heard of before watching this film.

The first thing to do when learning of a colorized version is look for the original B&W.

I am usually not a great fan of colorization but this is the Best in have seen... I actually prefer it to the black and white.
I remember when Ted Turner bought the Warner Bro. film library and wanted to colorize all... that was the beginning and didn't look good at all. the original black and white of course remain. This is a very good job of colorization. Cheers !!!

I find I’m always interested in noticing how sound-effects were made in early films and radio programs; in the scene where the dog is chained-up at the dog-house, I could swear the background noise lol of ‘Crickets’-chirping was naked by sleigh-bells.
    Anyone Else notice that?

Interesting, Nash certainly looks different than Charlie Chan in this movie, but speaks in much the same way. I haven’t checked to see which films Je made first, re the evolution of his acting style.

CARROL NAISH was a hell of a wonderful actor! I saw him as Charlie Chan too, and as Prince Daka, a wicked perverse japanese infiltrated in the US during World War. It was in "BATMAN", (1943) not a regular movie but a 15 chapter Serial produced by Columbia Pictures. He operated from a hidden torture chamber, disguised inside the "Tunnel of Horrors" at an amusement park, where he alternatively electrocuted his victims or threw them to a crocodile pit.

Colorized movies are more pleasant to watch. That's why more people watch them.
People who don't want to watch the movie shouldn't......and also shut up about other people's choices.

    Poor Noel.🥹
I’m both this film and the Charlie Chan movies, Nash was excellent at portraying Individuals considered ‘Inferior’ by the majority of Society at the time in a way that showed their Superior qualities - including intelligence, caring, thoughtfulness and a kindhearted-nature.
…His Characters seem also to be on the Outskirts, somewhat lonely and feeling ‘different’; in these two cases that’s understandable, but I wonder if the Actor himself also felt that way?
(Makes Me want to learn more about His Life.)
Thank-You for this, a variation on the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ theme!

I can understand why Viewers at the time were excited to see ‘colorized’ movies, but sometimes it’s more distracting than an improvement. The scenes with flickering/wavering candlelight in this film seem to make the colorized effects more variable.
