    I worked on the movie for 13 months in 2021 and 2022, I'm so proud of the work me and the hundreds of artists did on this movie. It's the first project in which I got to see my name displayed on the big screen, I couldn't have picked a better one for it.

    Now I understand why the previous movies put so much effort into geting you to care about Rocket. This movie is dependant on how much you love Rocket, the narrative itself is driven by the guardians' love for him.
    And after the previous movie ended with Rocket finally accepting that his friends love him unconditionally, it's really cool to see the extent of that love and how far they are willing to go.

    Your review kind of got to me. In a couple of weeks, I'm retiring from a school district I've worked for for twenty years. I've been there long enough that I'm now teaching the children of former student, but because of geography and possible relocation, it's almost a sure thing that I'll never see any of those families again. It's already clear that the next couple of weeks are going to be rather tough to get through.

    This hit pretty hard. In a sea of samey "analytical" reviews that barely scrape the surface level, it's refreshing to see someone focus on the experiences and feelings this movie can put us through. Maybe this isn't how it is for everyone, but for some of us Guardians means more than anything, and Vol. 3 was dedicated to us, it's a movie for the heart - so let's speak with it too.
    Thanks for this review. And subscribed.

    This was the most painful and beautiful film in the MCU. I love James Gunn for many reasons and simply bringing it down to "open the fucking door", explains the canvas he has been painting on.

    Your comment about goodbyes and things ending gives those things meaning reminds me of one of my favorite things Data said Picard in their goodbye in the finale of Picard Season 1:
    "I want to live, however briefly, knowing my life is finite. Mortality gives meaning to human life, Captain. Peace, love, friendship. These are precious because we know they cannot endure. A butterfly that lives forever is really not a butterfly at all."

      @@soyborne.bornmadeandundone1342 Maybe James Gunn can help the DC universe to keep it from sinking. Justice League was a tire fire. Wooden acting, bad effects, etc.

    One more thing that's noteworthy is that you can see how James Gunn has grown up, as well. In previous films, there are the many moments where characters have emotional moments and then someone gets hit in the head by a tire or something. In this one, those emotional beats are there, but the tire never comes. The dumb quip isn't said, or if it is, it makes sense in context with the rest of the film. Gunn is confident enough to let the moments stand on their own, without a gag, and the film is so much better for it.

    Guardians of the Galaxy was one of those few movies to evoke a sense of "goofy fun" that many movies try for but few ever achieve. The original Star Wars...the original Raiders of the Lost Ark...Toy Story...and it's hard to think of many others. I sat through the movie with big silly grin, knowing everyone present was having a lot of fun, including myself. This was different from the blood-chilling adrenaline of Aliens or the epic sense of awe and wonder that I felt when I saw Lawrence of Arabia, Seven Samurai and The Fellowship of the Ring. It was in a class of its own. And that feeling has been hard to recapture. I didn't feel it with Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2. Even though that was a decent MCU movie, there was something about it that just didn't give the same sense of innocent fun. Will we feel this with part 3, I wonder?

Which is very strange because I was definitely familiar with James Gunn’s earlier work. I think he’s very funny and a talented actor And I was pretty excited to see him in Guardians.

    I’ve always liked guardians better than most of the rest of the MCU… Gunn has tended to make them unique from the rest. A lot of that is the look - they’ve been just more colorful than the rest. And part of it is the pure unadulterated… Gunn-ness of them. There has to be something said about a guy like James Gunn that has been able to make these movies his own when there is a massive universe obviously trying to make them more homogenous to the rest.

    Don't blame the impermanence of main character death on the modern corporate hollywood movie machine. It was a Marvel Comics staple from almost the very beginning!

  • @Nethershaw
    @Nethershaw Рік тому +2

    I cried in most of Rocket's scenes. "Empathy machines" is right.
    Look at my avatar. You can guess a few things about what I am. I choose to present myself as something other than human because I have been the thing in the cage; I have been the discarded animal; I have been the misled creation. But if this is true of me, then it is true of everyone -- I occupy no special place, and I have no special history.
    I have asked the same questions of God as those with which Rocket presses the High Evolutionary. I have parted with God on similar terms, though I can't say whether I left His face as bloody. I have been separated from my kind. I have spent the intervening time denying what I am and being mistaken for other things in order to survive. I have lost friends and I have struggled to find more.
    In the end, Rocket gets to reclaim his identity from his creator and speak his true name. His losses are vindicated and his truth is validated. I am... still working toward all that. I am still burning away from my cage.
    If I'm honest, I avoided trailers and discussions of the film before release once I knew it was going to be Rocket's origin story. I knew just enough from the comic book lore to understand what themes were coming. I almost didn't go in, even though these are some of my favorite characters and stories, because I know how shallow and trite and entirely off-point Disney's treatments of the subject of the welfare of living things can be.
    I didn't... expect to feel seen.
    Empathy is a goddamn superpower, and it's the only one any of us actually get to have.

    Agree - music may have been a bit much; some of the flix was overly expositiony; one fight scene went on too long. Least tight James Gunn film in a while. And yet - as much heart at the last two volumes combined (maybe more). Last third is one heart pull after another. Thoroughly satisfying send off.

    I was fortunate enough to see an advanced screening on May 2nd I've been watching videos on the film all week but yours is easily the one that resonated the most with my thoughts and feelings. Like you and many others its been my favourite corner of the MCU and it was hard going in knowing this was the end of the ride. Yes that fitting choice of song on the way home would have been a great way to end the franchise or perhaps "Don't you forget about me" My hat goes off to Gunn, if ever we had a Star Wars for this generation, this was it. A perfect trilogy that builds on the characters with each instalment and teaches us about empathy and overcoming or at least coping with trauma.

    Have you ever seen Tromeo & Juliet? James Gunn wrote and (supposedly) co-directed it. It is demented. Sean Gunn has a pretty big part in it too. Or have you seen James Gunn's small part as the scientist in Toxic Avenger 4? As a Troma fan going back 30+ years it's so weird to see him get so big.

    Fucking hell, I'm trying to build up to watching this one in public. I've turned out to be a seriously soft touch for Gunn's style of heartfelt storytelling, and I just don't want to annoy the people next to me with my sobbing.
    I was first introduced to the Gunn Brothers with Troma's "Tromeo & Juliet" (we'll miss you, Sammy!), and it's been incredibly gratifying seeing them rightfully ascend to this height.

    Something I think isn’t praised enough about Gunn’s writing in these movies compared to the rest of the MCU is how each character has such a distinct voice. It isn’t just a back and forth of hyperwitty self aware characters snarking it up.
    Credit for this specific detail: I love how he wrote Adam Warlock. With incredibly powerful characters, it’s so important to humanize or create some level of personality weakness that makes them vulnerable. That’s why Thor worked so much better when they made him a bit goofy and sorta dumb. It’s why Carol Danvers didn’t work with so many people; she’s just an invulnerable badass with no character flaws. It gives me the utmost faith that Gunn’s Superman will be fantastic and fully grasp what makes that character great.

    SPOILERS!!!
    There was one particular scene that broke me specifically as a trans person.
    Spoilers from here: The scene in question is where a young rocket is in his cage with the other altered animals and has become their friends. They were all brought up as experiments by the film's main villain, so they don't have any assigned names, only serial numbers. They have become very good friends and one of them brings up that they should think of names for themselves. and when that first person chooses her name to be lylla, I completely broke down crying because that felt so powerful. I'm still tearing up over it while writing this post.
    I know it's not a perfect analogy of course, but it still resonated with me so much.

The biggest complaint I’ve seen is the gore factor (not sure if that’s the exact right term for it but I think you get what I mean…) but I think even that was well done. It wasn’t needlessly gory. It was accurate. (Well as accurate as a movie about space pirates can be :p)

    Why is the mcu in a better place than star wars? If the passion that went into the new trilogy that they put into these three subseqint guardian movie films then maybe they would have been better.
    To be fair the amount of marvel comics is vast but so are the star wars books, comics and lore. So idk how they messed up but book of boba fett and obi wan were so underwhelming its heartbreaking

    • @middleagedcouchpotato677
      @middleagedcouchpotato677 Рік тому

      Obi wan in particular pissed me off. They made him so weak. When he finally got out his light saber and took care of business I think I might have cheered. The sad thing is that the series had so much potential. I think the difference is that with the MCU there are clearly people there who care about weaving stories and making sure they do their characters justice long term. Sure, they’re not perfect. But it clearly matters. They have a big picture in a way a lot of franchises don’t and, for the most part, we aren’t in conflict with how characters are portrayed so we are all in on the story. So they have the ability to build and build and then break our hearts. DC hasn’t figured that out. And, surprisingly, neither has Star Wars.

  • @Canuovea

    Yeah, I've got to see this film. It's good to hear Steve likes the film; that's usually a good sign.
    The thing is, I love Guardians 1. It was my favourite Marvel movie until Guardians 2 came out and supplanted it. Guardians 2 is still my favourite Marvel film. I couldn't give a damn about Infinity War, which I didn't care for so much I never watched Endgame, so Guardians 2 has remained tip top. I expect this to remain true, but if Gunn can outdo himself here? I'll be surprised, impressed even. If he can't, though, I'm happy to go into it with high expectations anyway.
    I wonder what this man can do with DC.

  • @Square_Peg
    @Square_Peg Рік тому

    Spoiler warning. I'm not a huge fan of the MCU movies, I don't watch every single one, I don't get all of the jokes, I don't wet my pants when some well known character shows up without introduction, instead I sit there clueless as to who the newcomer is and why they matter. But anyway, I liked the first two Guardians movies, they were fun and exciting to watch. But this one wasn't. I didn't enjoy this one. It was sad. And it also made me wonder why Rocket's life mattered more than all of the people killed in the process of saving him. Sure, he is a main character, beloved by millions and valuable IP that will never die off as long as he is bringing in the bucks, but in universe how many people died in the process of saving him? A whole planet of people died as the crazy stretchy face bad guy left their planet. The guardians didn't even try saving that planet. The only focus was saving Rocket while millions of beings died as their planet exploded. It made it kind of difficult to be happy Rocket survived when so many people died in the process of saving him. Could they have save the planet? Sure, let them see what mr. stretchy face was doing, have a 2 minute fight where the break into the blowy up room and destroy the planet blasters or whatever. In the process of saving Rocket they save a planet, but no, instead the planet of animal people all died. I guess that part of the galaxy didn't matter to the guardians.
