al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī used to say: ‘O son of Adam! Do not let your heart (qalb) cling to anything of the worldly life; such is a wicked clinging. Severe your ties with it and shut its doors before you. Restrict yourself thereof, O deluded one, with what allows you to reach your destination. Beware thinking that you will boast on the Day of Judgement of your fortune and children. How impossible it is for any of that to be of use to you on that Day. That is the Day when the worldly life vanishes entirely, and only the deeds remain on the necks of its doers.'
