A little bit of additional info here: The 3DS/2DS family actually does have built-in IR Blasters in each console, but they don't work with these games or the Generation 5 ones since they're specifically trying to read IR data from the cartridge slot. It doesn't matter what cartridge is in the slot as long as it's a cartridge with IR compatibility. So for example, you could be playing a ROM of Pokemon HeartGold via homebrew with a copy of SoulSilver in the cartridge slot and you could still connect the Pokewalker just fine.
@@munchlaxsegundo3628 There's a specific patch for PokeTransporter and Dream Radar that lets you connect to ROMs instead of a cartridge. If you look up "PokeTransporter Redirect" it should be the top result.
The reason why the pokemon can't be sent back on another save is because the pokemon data is kept on the save file, while only a little bit of it is sent to the pokewalker. It's how you can retrieve the mon if you lose the pokewalker, just in case there's a really important mon on it.
Out of curiosity, how does one retrieve the mon if the pokewalker is lost / gone? I know I still have my copy of soulsilver, with quite a few mons on my long lost poke walker lol.
Poor wooper, spent decades on a pokewalker limbo, and just when they got the slightest hope of reuniting with their trainer, it got taken away, and they got erased from existence.
I miss my PokéWalker. I lost it when my apartment at the time caught fire and I never found it. The IR cartridges for HGSS and the Gen 5 games were definitely a really interesting feature! Like that you did a video on this
It's too bad your Wooper had to go away. I am glad though that the pokemon doesn't disappear when the battery dies. The battery in mine died with my Latias in it but one new battery and there it was.
It doesn't disappear, you have to unpair it from your game and/or the internals have to have been shorted in some way. It was probably dropped a lot by whomever. That never happened to me in years of using it. The device was rated to last for 4 entire months between charges or battery swaps. There is NO way they didn't account for system failure.
(Before watching the video) I dont think it will work because the fake doesn't have an infrared sensor. The only reason why the original cartridge is so dark is to allow infrared light to reach the sensor, like a TV remote. (After watching the video) (-_-)
@@misterkeevs685 if you have Pokémon heart gold, soul silver, black, white, black 2 and white 2 cart inserted you can use the pokewalker with a rom Version of hgss on something like twilight menu
You would have to insert a cartridge with an IR sensor for a rom to be able to use the pokewalker. With this method youre also able to transfer romhack pokemon to the pokewalker if the rom has custom data for the pokewalker. I cant find this person atm but theres a romhacker thats currently working on a hgss game that has a hisuian zorua transferred to a pokewalker
You can actually recover that pokemon back onto its original cartridge in case you lose the pokewalker. Apparently it doesn’t ever really leave the cartridge, it’s just not accessible to create the illusion that it left the game. Because of this, you can force it back into your save file.
I will never forgive child me for selling both HeartGold AND SoulSilver to GameStop. I still have one of my pokewalkers, but getting one of the games now is stupidly expensive, so seems it will continue to be useless for the forseeable future unfortunately. Thanks for testing this though! I had been wondering this for a while, so its good to at least confirm a fake cart doesn't usually work.
Lol I remember one time I went to Gamestop and I wanted to sell all my games and my ds but they only offered me like 30bucks (+ rejected my DS and told me it was in "too bad of a condition) and that was so ridiculous that I didnt take the deal. Idek why they shittalked my ds so hard. Its only a bit scratched up, actually good condition considering I was a kid. Anyways Im glad I kept my DS and my games (although I later threw away some of them.... which was was kind of dumb BUT i kept HeartGold)
You *can* use the Pokewalker with a romhack in a 2/3DS or DSi if you launch it through TwilightMenu++ and have an authentic Pokémon IR-enhanced card in the slot. It can be either HGSS or any gen 5 game. TM++ is just using it for its IR sensor so its save file won't be affected. You point the Pokewalker at the cartridge, not the back of the New 2DS XL though. Since it's a N2DSXL the cartridge is behind a flap so the flap has to be open as well. To run the romhack on a regular DS (without Pokewalker support) you need a DS flashcart like R4 or Ace3DS. Wooper is stuck because it never truly left the save it was in. Only a subset of its data is copied to the Pokewalker. The reset option in the Pokewalker menu will return any Pokémon that had been put on it back to you, which is useful if it gets lost, damaged, registered to another game, or the battery dies.
I glad still having my official HeartGold/SoulSilver and 3 poke walkers. I had lost my poke walker at my work hotel, my friend gave me a free poke walker. a few years later, I found my poke walker in my employee pants hooked the hanger. My friend graduated from school after I found it. so I tried to give it to him back but don't have his contact well.
so i didnt see any comments suggesting this, but aside from the few reasons i saw, another possible reason you can't haphazardly send mon to any game file regardless of save is because someone could possibly steal your walker and then send that mon to their own games. which makes that 'failsafe' of locking them out of the game to generate the illusion of them being gone look a lot smarter and feel a lot less daunting if you can't get a walker replaced or fixed.

There's actually a sort of romrack framework called HGEngine, and it adds the rest of the generations of pokemon to HGSS, and it actually works with the pokewalker! So you can send modern pokemon to your pokewalker (as long as you have IR capabilities on your system)!
@@sparklesparkle3370 i personally havent quite gotten it to work, someone would have to mod the encounters in, and i havent succeeded in using a randomizer either.. genning is different too since the rom framework itself has been changed..

I will say: yes, the black cartridge of BW 1 & 2 is because of the IR functions of the C-Gear. When I was a kid, I saw the IR and thought "Wait, where's the IR sensor on a DS then?" If I got Soul Silver instead of Spectrobes Beyond the Portals ($20 budget and my little sister thought Rydrake looked enough like Lugia), I might have put that together after seeing that "point at game card" prompt on it.

The roms are missing the little chip that communicates to the pokewalker, the feature on pokemon bw/bw2 that interacts with the dream world or whatever, won't work on multi-player similarly, because there is no chip attached to the cartridge
I haven't watch the video, but I can guess that it won't work just knowing that the fake cartridge doesn't have the infrared port needed to communicate with the Pokewalker.
What if you tried the rom game while having the original cartridge inside and seeing if the cartridge will act as a pass through antenna for the Pokéwalker?
i found out by using a white 2 rom with my white 2 cartridge in (my save got corrupted and i can't load the game normally) on my 2ds, if i use the IR features, it'll still pull it from the cartridge and the connection still works perfectly fine maybe something you can try is trying to connect the pokewalker to stormsilver by having the authentic soulsilver cart in, might be interesting!
