I am a subscriber and just finished watching you day in Vienna. At the end you said you were going to spend a month + in Italy. I spent seven weeks this summer (2023) in Italy before it got too hot. My itinerary was Rome, Orvieto, Siena, Florence (stayed in Impruneta), Pisa, Lucca, La Spezia, Cinque Terra, Turin, Milan, Como, Venice, Modena, Naples, Salerno, Amalfi coast, Pompeii, Paestum, Tropea, Matera, Alberobello, Rome, and Tivoli. I look forward to your upcoming videos. 👍
moved 20 years ago to salzburg(city) and it's probably the best thing i could have done. i travel a lot (aproxx 1month every year all around the world experiencing other cultures) and yet i always love it to come back. i've never been a city-guy and yet i don't see salzburg as a "city" like many others. it's just a nice mix of city and nature. a 15minute ride with the bike and i can hike up the untersberg. all mountains and lakes are within a short distance and daytrips to the salzkammergut that offers even more incredible landscapes with its mountains and lakes gives this all an incredible finish. when i met my girlfriend, she immediately felt in love with salzburg too, so it was not even a question who moves. now she moves to salzburg and adds just more to my life here. there are so many nice places in this world and i love to visit as much as i can. but this is the place i will always return. nice you enjoyed it. this said, i think you need to spend more times in cities to inhale the spirit and culture. when i travel, i usually try to give every place at least 3-4 full days(not including the transfer-days), or depending on the country 4-6weeks per country. that sounds a lot, but i think it's most of the time not even close to enough time to get the feeling of the places, the people and the culture. this often opens possibilities to get in touch with locals (depending on region in this world this may be easier or harder) that adds a lot to the experience.
Danke schön for filming Salzburg. It’s probably my favorite city in Europe. As you noticed, it’s gorgeous. Took students several times. We spent 3 days there each trip, and weren’t bored. I also sent some students to study at the University of Salzburg several summers. They were there much longer, loved every minute. Glad you rode the funicular down the hill. It’s fun and helpful for those with mobility issues, as are the horse drawn carriage tours. Wonderful, even in winter. Stay longer next trip. You only scratched the surface of what there is to see and do. -Elizabeth
I total agree with you on entrance fees , they add up and are nerve wracking. For example, when I visited the Acropolis in Athens I chose a walking tour around it by myself and saved the crazy waiting times, it was wonderful.
That's a great tip as well!! We always try to evaluate if it's going to be worth paying the price or not. It's not always easy as you don't want to miss something really worth seeing, but also don't want to waste money. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers 🍻
How funny, we are currently in Vienna for a month and took a day trip to Salzburg last weekend as my wife and daughter are massive fans of the Sound of Music! We agree, Salzburg is one of the most beautiful cities that we have seen on our travels so far.
@@thevinsea Yes we did! We vlog our full time travels so I filmed my wife and the children recreate the scenes in Mirabell Gardens! We did the official Sound of Music Tour as well which was really good and managed to visit many film locations.
I spent about that same amount of time in Salzburg, when i was stationed in Germany. When i went it was late winter and snow covered. I always say that it is the most beautiful city that i have visited. Looking forward to seeing your Italy stops.
The Sound of Music bus tour was one of the greatest things we've ever done for a number of fluky reasons. If you are a fan this is a must. I can't tell you how great this was
I'm in awe just seeing it on video...My passport finally arrived & I'm dreaming about getting to Germany & Austria; Salzburg is top priority! Thank you for the tips & sharing your experience!
I understand why you guys needed some time off as you produce good quality videos, which are extremely well edited, may I say with an artistic flair in places,, with the right amount of music that marries up perfectly with the various scenes, which at times feels so dreamy and relaxing to watch. And all of that takes time... Salzburg looks so clean and picturesque. Cheers for another quality video showing me more of my home continent. :)
Thank you so much!! The time off was nice and plan on doing a bit more of it! We went a little too fast and started to burn out. We are now rejuvenated and ready to go with some new ideas! Thanks again!! Cheers!!🍻
We were in Salzburg in 1993. It did not cost that much then. We had a tour guide that taught us a lot about the castle. There was a tunnel from the fortress to the priest's mistress in town and he had a bunch of kids from her. We couldn't go inside the nunnery but could see it from the gates. Also an interesting fact is the Trapp family did not go over the mountains when they escaped. But we did get to see the mountain field where she sang. I wonder how much things have changed. I loved Salzburg....
We were in Salzburg last month and made it to Die Weiss too. Yum! The Salzburg card was great for us. I think we went to over 200 Euros worth of attractions, many things I ordinarily would have skipped. We made it our goal to really get our moneys worth out of the card!
Another nice video! It hasn’t seemed too crowded esp considering height of tourist season. Very much looking forward to your Italy vids. We’ll be there next year for a month. Safe travels!
Hi! We really are happy to hear you appreciate that. I know on our first trip to Europe years ago, that was something that stood out to us and made us aware of the challenges some may have. Thanks so much for watching a following along. Cheers!!
Enjoyed your video and it Brought back memories of our very recent 4 night / 5 day trip to Salzburg in mid July this year - we did side trips to Hallstat for one day, travelled out on the buses to Hallstat and came back via train - there are a number of youtube videos that describe how to do this and its very easy and quite reasonable in terms of cost, going out on bus is worthwhile though you have to use three buses in total but you get to see a lot of the Salzkammergut region and pass via / through lovely villages and lakes Wolfgang See, Bad Ischel and St Gilgen to name but three - we also went to the Salt mine at Bad Durrenberg, again by bus and return to Salzburg - we did this trip on a day when some rain was forecast - the rest of the time we enjoyed Salzburg and all it has to offer - I would definitely go back to Austria and indeed the Salzkammergut region, I was really impressed how clean everything was and really enjoyed the interaction with every Austrian we met - they were very polite with regard to my attempts at speaking German, that said I always think if travelling anywhere that some basic phrases get you a long way even if you don't pronounce them exactly as they should be
We sure do hope to make it back to this area so we can see so much more. We absolutely agree, learning a few phrases is always a great thing to do for each county you visit. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers!!
Looks awesome! Italy is my favorite place in the world. Just know that it will be HOT but that's what spritz's are for. Cinque Terre for at least for a day trip.
Haha - I want to see Brian sing that as well!! If we had the time and would have made it to the gazebo location - a duet of 16 going on 17 was definitely on the list of things to do 😂. Cheers!!
I am originally from Salzburg, currently packing up and leaving Seattle after 32 years. I'm 55 now and I'm moving back to Salzburg 😊, I'm super homesick and this video was wonderful ❤️🇦🇹. One day is definitely not enough. Need at least a week. Next time drive 45 minutes southeast of the city into the Lake district of St Wolfgang, Red Bull headquarters is also on the Lake Fuschl,,, the gondola rides and the train rides to the top of the mountain such as Schafberg to the top of the mountains to the restaurants everywhere,, and the best part is the little town of Hallstadt. Hallstadt was featured on "Ripley's Believe it or not" back in the 1980s and they were showing the 1000s of skulls and bones in the cave next to the church. Above Hallstadt is also famous for the salt mines that go deep into the mountains and the long wooden slides. Thanks for the great video. ❤ (Salzburg will be home base however we will be doing same slow-travel you both are doing)🎉
Glad that you made it to Salzburg. I think I was there in the 70s. I'm happy that you made it up all of those steps. You've burned off enough calories to have two beers now and throw in a Bosna. LOL! Greetings from Los Angeles
Hey guys! Salzberg! I am thrilled that you got decent weather. First time I was there it was the "sheet rain". The second time there was more rain. I did, in fact, go on The Sound of Music tour the first time, I can tell you that there are various places through the City for the locations. Some are the fronts of buildings, and others the back. Outside of the City is the church for the wedding. The gazebo was long since taken down at the backyard of the estate on the pond. But there are some cool spots to check out. I would likely recommend a trip to Halstatt more than taking the Sound of Music tour quite honestly, but it was still memorable many years later. I really enjoyed attending in 2018 a string quartet performance of Mozart at Mirabell Palace. Always great content. The Mozart marzipan chocolates are overrated for me. A walk to the fortress above was very scenic.
Brian….I thought your comment about feeling like a string puppet was going to earn you a walk back down the stairs! 🤣😂🤣😂. The castle and the Abbey were amazing! Looks like you had perfect weather for your trip there, too. My husband will be excited to check out the brewery and I’m looking forward to trying the pretzels and rye bread. 🤤. Stunning gardens! 😍 Another terrific video of a beautiful city! So looking forward to your videos from Italy! Safe travels. Before I forget, again, I just wanted to thank you so very much for all the hours y’all put into making these fabulous videos! As a new slow travel UA-camr, and a beginner video maker, I know there is so much work that we never see that makes your channel my favorite channel ever! I look forward every Saturday to getting my Brian and Carrie fix. 😉. You have inspired my husband and myself along our new adventures traveling the world. Deep respect and gratitude! ❤️❤️
I was in Salzburg in 1996. Many things look the same but lots of changes too. However, still just beautiful and old world. I wish I could go back someday but I'm afraid to fly with all the craziness going on in the world.😮 You huts did a great job on this video.❤
We were in Salzburg in July 2023. More crowds but still a beautiful and incredible experience. If you have the time and you want a convenient means of orienting yourself in Salzburg, ride the Hop On Hop Off Yellow bus. You can catch it at the Mirabelle Palace and it'll take you on a ride through the city and to Hellbrunn Palace and its water garden (and the Sound of Music gazebo). Get off when you want, get on when you want.
Loved this. I definitely have a pin in Austria. I think I'd almost prefer Salzburg over Vienna if I had to pick just one. What do you think? Looking forward to Italy. Very cool that you're staying there for over a month!
We would stay in Salzburg over Vienna, but Vienna does have a lot to offer if you can afford all the attractions. We are very excited about our Italy series and getting back to slow travel. Thank you for always watching, Stacie!! ❤
I agree with Brian. Salzburg over Vienna. But my reason is Vienna is a big city while Salzburg is a town. Both are gorgeous, but Salzburg feels “homey”. 💜
I am living in dalzburg and can assure you would have a great time here. Vienna isnt that beautigul but you can see way more things. I don't know whats more important to you
Hello from Phoenix. Another great video. I am sold. Will have to get over there soon. After watching your Bellingham video, i was determined to get out of the 110*F plus and go up last month to cool off. Unfortunately, a heat wave had kicked in as so much of the country, it was in the nineties. Still better than Phoenix. Sure enjoyed Fairhaven and a west coast ipa at the Black Cat. Cheers!
That is awesome that you made it up to Bellingham!! We used to frequent the Black cat often and Bellingham has some of the best breweries in the PNW!! We always look forward to going home!! Thank you for watching our channel!! Cheers!!🍻
True, Salzburg is a very beautiful and clean city. I'm a big movie buff and do remember the Sound Of Music. Perhaps unknowingly, the Mirabell Palace Gardens and old town of Salzburg where you walked are specific locations the Sound of Music was filmed. I didn't get the name of that castle you both climbed up to, but no doubt it was most likely filmed there as well. The Trapp family actually lived in Salzburg. I think it's cool visiting places where famous people in history have been such as Mozart or historical events took place. Not that you have literally walked in their shoes, but that connection makes it more real and wondrous. I digress. Like Brian, I too have a fear of heights. However, while visiting Canada I did take advantage of the Gondola ride Peak2Peak from Whistler. As much as I'm afraid of heights, I couldn't pass it up, though it was a white knuckle experience. Seeing you two live so close to Canada, am wondering if you may have gone on it. It went even faster than your ride in Salzburg, I think taking 11 minutes from one peak to the next. Great video! Thanks so much for sharing!
Yes, those were some of the filming areas. I'm unsure about what scenes, if any, were filmed at the castle though. But like you said, just being in these historical places, truly a wonderful experience. I haven't been on that Gondola, but have seen it. Not sure I could get Brian to brave that one. Cheers!!
So cool! Sarah Gabl's dad Franz, my 2nd Dad, was born in St Anton Austria! I have to admit that I've never seen the sound of music, I just know the Doe song from high school! :)
Austria has some of the most beautiful countryside, we want so badly to go back and spend more time. You and Brian should watch it together when we're home 😂😂. I know it by heart so I'll sing all the song for you.
Salzburg is the best choice if you only have a day or two. Vienna is amazing but you need at least 3 days to see everything. We were only able to see what we could do if we had more time.
Amazing video. interesting tips. My passport finally arrived & I'm dreaming about getting to France & Austria; Salzburg and Innsbruck are top priority!
@@roadtofreecollege6337 I totally forgot that rule! I remembered this one though “if two vowels go walking, the first one is quiet and the second does the talking” 😄
@@michellelkphoto1543 Yes. The pronunciation of ei or ie used to confuse me, until I remembered ein is an easy clue. If it’s spelled like ein, it’s pronounced like ein. German is simpler than many people believe. Few, if any irregularities.
My wife and I just got back from there(5-25-24) after a short stay at Leopoldskron Palace, please do yourself a favor if you go and take a week.....or more.
I've been in Salzburg city now a couple times since my gf lives very close by. I'd say if you take a local with you, you can get alot done in the old Town in one day. But on your own or as a couple from abroad probably not.
Brian just wondering about ur kit setup their. I see an osprey backpack and a sling. Would love to know what u find works for day trips on these sorts of days.
I actually wish I had a bigger sling or smaller backpack. The Nomadic sling is too small for my phone, a charger, GoPro batteries and cords. The backpack is small but too big to walk around with all day in the heat. I carry both for the convenience of the sling for my phone and money. The backpack is great for long travel days so I can't get rid of it. Currently, this is my biggest concern in life!! 🙂
When we were in Salzburg (Mirabell Gardens) we tried to recreate a 2023 Version of those scenes from The Sound of Music 😂😂😂 (It's uploaded in my channel if you want to see it😅) but everybody do be starring 🤣
Yes, we get all of our drone footage from Canva. We use the paid version and use it for all of our thumbnails and overlays as well. Thank you for watching!! 🙂
One of my dream bucket list destinations! Curious with all the walking and being car free do you guys feel healthier than when you lived in the states?
Male and Loved Sound of Music.... my in laws live in Germany on the border with Salzburg and have been there around 30 times..... would not be fair for me to pick out the locations. LOL
Ive seen many vids USamericans visit Salzburg! First thing they have to talk is.....Sound of Music! I know people from the US love this Movie but i can tell you 95 % of us...Austrians...have never seen it! Tourism people love Sound of Music!😁😁
I’m from the small hometown where the director of the Sound of Music, Robert Wise, is from so we were saturated with this movie all through my childhood. Never knew it was in Salzburg! Thanks for the education!
To all Americans who are planning a vacation in Europe in the future. Two weeks is not enough. It is not the Europeans who should be held responsible for this, but rather the Americans, who only allow their hard-working top workers two weeks of annual vacation. As a European, they couldn't pay me that much to get so little vacation.
Glad you enjoyed it but remember to pronounce it properly. First syllable (Sal-) rhymes with "pal" not "call" and imagine there is a "t" in it i.e. "Saltzburg". Nice video though.
You say you usually do not like to pay entry fees... But you do understand locals have to keep these old buildings in order? that Austrians pay tax for that? As well to keep the city clean and safe for you? Seeing 'the old world' for free, would be ruining it at the same time!
The Americans and Sound of Music! In Austria and Salzburg nearly noone knows the movie! I live in Salzburg and I am an exeption of this rule, because I deliberately watched it once to know what the tourists want to find in my home-city. What shall I say: I wasn't particularly impressed!
I was there in 1983,beautiful City!!

Thanks! Enjoy a glass of vino in Italy on us! ❤️❤️🍷🍷
WOW!! Thank you so much!! The comments and the support that you two have given us is very much appreciated.❤
That's a great tip, thanks so much for sharing ☺
Cheers!!🍻
Amazing you two
Thanks for watching!!
If you could only make to one - Vienna vs. Salzburg? Great videos!
Thank you for watching and safe travels!! You'll love Austria!
Cheers!!🍻
Nice video!! Daniel from Rio de Janeiro.
Thank you, Daniel!
Zell am See is where Julie Andrews sang the song on the hill with the church in the back drop !
The brewery name would be pronounced “dee vice”. The W is always a V sound. Loving this video. I was here in 2014!
Good to know!! Thank you for the clarification, Michelle!
Cheers!!🍻
Yes, but there are no silent letters in German, so the the “e” on the end is pronounced, uh.
Wonderful video, thanks for sharing. What time of year did you go?
We were there last August. Thank you so much for watching!
❤❤❤
My wife and I just got back from there(5-25-24) after a short stay at Leopoldskron Palace, please do yourself a favor if you go and take a week.....or more.
I've been in Salzburg city now a couple times since my gf lives very close by. I'd say if you take a local with you, you can get alot done in the old Town in one day. But on your own or as a couple from abroad probably not.
We would agree with that! If we had some one to show us around we could have seen so much more.
@@BrianandCarrie 😄 thanks mate. Good to know.
You don't know Salzburg as long as you haven't heard The Rainer Marsch played in a weekend beer tent and sung by all people there.
When we were in Salzburg (Mirabell Gardens) we tried to recreate a 2023 Version of those scenes from The Sound of Music 😂😂😂 (It's uploaded in my channel if you want to see it😅) but everybody do be starring 🤣
Oh and did you get those drone shots from Canva by any chance?
Yes, we get all of our drone footage from Canva. We use the paid version and use it for all of our thumbnails and overlays as well. Thank you for watching!! 🙂
@@BrianandCarrie no copyright? I've always been wondering that 😅
We pay a subscription so there is no copyright. It is way easier than packing a drone.
@@BrianandCarrie see I was thinking of using them too but then I thought I might get copyrighted if I did use them 😂 (I’ve subbed too)
One of my dream bucket list destinations! Curious with all the walking and being car free do you guys feel healthier than when you lived in the states?
It is easier to stay healthy outside of the US for sure. We do try to eat healthy and walk as much as we can. We also don't have an excuse not to. 😃
Male and Loved Sound of Music.... my in laws live in Germany on the border with Salzburg and have been there around 30 times..... would not be fair for me to pick out the locations. LOL
Thank you for watching and commenting, Jamey! You are very lucky to be able to visit as often as you are!!
Cheers!!🍻
Ive seen many vids USamericans visit Salzburg! First thing they have to talk is.....Sound of Music! I know people from the US love this Movie but i can tell you 95 % of us...Austrians...have never seen it! Tourism people love Sound of Music!😁😁
It's a classic!
No. 4 days is the number.
I’m from the small hometown where the director of the Sound of Music, Robert Wise, is from so we were saturated with this movie all through my childhood. Never knew it was in Salzburg! Thanks for the education!
That's so interesting! I never knew where in Austria it was filmed until we started looking at places to visit, so happy we were able to go ☺
Can you tell please what site or application are you using( and showing in the video) to find attractions and places to eat?)
Hi! We typically just search on Google maps. Cheers 🍻
St. Peter's Abbey...in Sound of Music, isn't that where the Van Trapp family hid when attempting to escape Austria!?
Yes!! Love that scene of the movie and it was so cool see it in person. Cheers 🍻
@@BrianandCarrie literally my favorite movie and I’m not making that up…looove the soundtrack.
How is the weather in August? Is it too warm? I want to spend few days in August and enjoy the day outside without melting 😂
It will be warm for sure!
We completely agree Claudia! We would get 3 weeks a year and that just wasn't enough! Thank you for watching and adding to the conversation. 😀
glad you are enjoying Europe, I far prefer SE Asia!!!
We will be doing a video comparing the two soon! Thank you for watching our channel, we very much appreciate the support.
Mirabell gardens….do re mi……
If you had three days in the summer: Vienna or Salzburg?
Salzburg ❤️❤️. Loved this City, beautiful all around. Many wonderful sites to see, and great with all the flowers in bloom at the gardens.
@@BrianandCarrie Thank you
@@BrianandCarrie Vienna was a real disappointment for me as everything is covered in graffiti
one day is NOT enough maybe 3
Agreed!! We did mention that in the video, at least 3!! Thank you for watching!
Cheers!! 🍻
@@BrianandCarrie lol
Glad you enjoyed it but remember to pronounce it properly. First syllable (Sal-) rhymes with "pal" not "call" and imagine there is a "t" in it i.e. "Saltzburg". Nice video though.
Thank you so much for the correction! 😀
You say you usually do not like to pay entry fees... But you do understand locals have to keep these old buildings in order? that Austrians pay tax for that? As well to keep the city clean and safe for you? Seeing 'the old world' for free, would be ruining it at the same time!
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Cheers 🍻
The Americans and Sound of Music! In Austria and Salzburg nearly noone knows the movie! I live in Salzburg and I am an exeption of this rule, because I deliberately watched it once to know what the tourists want to find in my home-city. What shall I say: I wasn't particularly impressed!
