A gamma-ray burst is the brief, powerful emission of gamma-rays, the highest energy form of light. First observed over 50 years ago, gamma-ray bursts are now known to arise in distant galaxies, making them the most energetic explosions in the universe.
Dr. Pugliese will explain the major milestones in understanding these formidable events. These discoveries have allowed astronomers to get a better understanding of the final stage of massive stars, the origin of heavy chemical elements, and one of the important sources of gravitational waves.
