    Great video. A buddy of mine took a logging class at a timber school and showed me the basics of a plunge cut and strap. What a much safer way to drop trees. Got to practice on a job where someone was putting up a new horse fence so we could play around with steering and tree placement. Results amazed me.

    • @Fraggr92
      @Fraggr92 3 роки тому +1

      Logging classes really do help a whole lot. I know a lot of people look at operating a chainsaw and felling trees as one of those "manly man skills" that you "don't need training for", but the reality is that logging is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. The amount of people who die every year from incorrectly felling and bucking/limbing trees or cripple themselves by not operating their chainsaws properly is absurd. Lots of hidden dangers and special felling techniques that you'd never think of as a layman. Better to let those who have experience and who have seen things go wrong share their knowledge with you so that you don't end up being a statistic.

    Hi Mike, As is typical in these incidences it appears to be a couple cumulative errors. One…his wedge cut was a face cut (not the humbolt cut which is generally safer but seldom used by novice tree fellers) but more importantly, his wedge cut was not nearly open enough. Two…back cut was made but he was not “cut-up”…left too much holding wood. Got on tractor to push tree over, wedge closed shut, holding wood too strong, Ka-bam…barber chair and tractor went wheels up. Probably an alder…they’re ignorant that way! Really like your channel. Dave

    One word. Winch.
    If you need to get a tree down with your tractor then get a winch and pull it down from a safe angle/distance. Also a block and a strap so that you can redirect the cable so that you're not felling towards your tractor. Don't mess around with trying to push it over with the loader. Not only is the loader not built for it, but it also isn't strong enough to stop a large tree if it decides to fall backwards or split, meaning you'll probably end up with the tree on top of the tractor with all the damage and nastiness that implies. All it really does is give you a false sense of security which makes you more likely to get sloppy and take shortcuts, which translates to bad news later down the line.

      Yes, why have life and machine that weighs 10,000 pounds pushing over a 50,000 pound tree? Use wedges, drive them in, cable up to a winch attached to something you don't mind wrecking, like another tree. That tree had enough weight to pick up that tractor like it was featherweight, that's the issue.

    When you're shoving from the back cut side, you're definitely taking a dumb chance that close in. The top of the tree will do all the work for you if your cut is in the right place. Ten minutes of thoughtful planning beats 4 hours picking a tractor out of a tree. A handful of felling wedges works wonders... the wrap strap is a good idea too.

    Okay I had to comment on this. This was the first time I ever saw that picture. Now that said I spent a lot of time in the computer gaming testing area. When I was dealing with network for 15 years. picked up a lot of what they considered common knowledge that would not be common knowledge to people that Harvest firewood farming and homesteading. My first question is this is there any other pictures from any other angle? My next question which Mike pointed out is where are the tractor tracks in the snow? That question is the first legitimate question that raises other questions. If the tracks are in the foreground out of frame then why was he pushing sideways to the cut? Also take note of the stump below the cuts the bark and coloration is completely different from the rest of the tree. If he was pushing sideways how did the tractor suddenly jump 45 degrees to get caught in the the tree? Now look at the trees in the background that runs into the left front tire. I actually went to a 96 inch screen to look at this as close as I could in HD. The truck should be visible between the top of the tire and the front brace for the front end loader we should see part of that trunk we do not is it is it have a big swoop to the right which would be odd to that tree? And finally why are the tires so clean? Call photoshop on this one

    You don't want to cut into any tree and then try pushing it over. That is how trees split. And you get photos like that one. If you feel you must put pressure on a tree to force it to go the direction you need. Use a excavator and not a tractor. The excavator weighs more than a tractor and can be moved side to side to get you out of trouble.

  • @thomasdesmond2248
    @thomasdesmond2248 5 років тому +4

    I would recommend when pushing a tree over with an excavator to put the bucket flat bottom against the tree. Especially with a dead tree. The teeth of the bucket are likely to split the tree and bring the top back down on you. God bless

    • @ericharris893
      @ericharris893 4 роки тому

      Thomas Desmond I’ve cleared many trees over the years and there’s no need to rake and shake the tree with the teeth. Just use the heel and uncurl the bucket to sent the tree off. Never the teeth. Call that rake a shake. Makes the sticks fall off and the top to break off on bad trees

    The tractor in the tree has earned the " Dunce Award " by whomever accomplished it. First off, I never, repeat never work under a raised bucket & arms doing tree work or most anything else for that matter! I can't speak for anyone else, but I NEVER trust hydraulics with my life. PERIOD.
    I like the excavator work Mike, they are a blast to work with as I have operated much larger units than this unit. I Like the Bobcat with those rubber tracks & the bucket & thumb, real handy.
    Not sure why you are taking out the entire softwood trees, rather than cut them flush to the ground, perhaps a future garden area or bldg. site?

    Hi folks,
    Those of us that have worked in the timber industry understand that the term "widow maker " doesn't just refer to a few options. It refers to serious tree felling accidents come in a wide variety of circumstances and errors. The problem with that tree was the rotten hole in the center that the operator was unaware of.

    Real easy to get killed or hurt around trees and or equipment. Was pushing on a 30" dead oak with a D-6 and a widowmaker came down and hit the 4 post ROPS cover. Crushed front left 4" square tubing upright over an inch and really got my attention.Section of tree that came down probably weighed 500 pounds and fell from 20' or so.After that if I'm taking down trees it's with a dozer and the strong ROPS they have. Tractors are for skidding and their loaders are for loading: not taking down(or pushing) standing trees.A mini or better yet midi excavator like you had in the intro is good too but don't have one(yet).

    Because he was using a Ford. 😁 Lol!!! And I love how your wife came out ”what are you doing!?” Mine would have said exactly the same.
    You guys have weather like us in NC. We get all four seasons in one week.
    As always, great info. Lack of info and experience cause a lot of dangerous situations. Thanks for sharing and helping other stay away from dangerous situations.

    Remember when breaking out anything like roots with an excavator if you feel your boom stop. You have a lot more power with the curl function of the bucket.

    Yes most defiantly that tree could snag the tractor on its way down; I thank you hit the nail on the head on how the tractor climbed up there. I built a cordwood house with over 100 cord in the wall and 128 beams, post and caps per floor with two floors and a widows walk on the top - all hand cut. So I've spent my fair share of time in the woods around split trees, learners and widow makers. A barber-chair, as you called it, is the most dreaded because when they come down there is a lot of variables as to how THAT tree is going to come down. Some times they just split and fall over but I would say the worst scenario would involve swampy ground, leaner tree with a split. They can spring back over the top of you and drop and/or arc around the trunk 180* slicing and uprooting everything in their path - bad ju ju either way.
    Thanks for the video.
    heads up or off out there.

    In the case of the picture it looks like some one solo cutting and trying to push it over aftr getting the saw hung up,it takes a some one cutting and one operating the tractor. I have done alot of trees with a machine and a hand faller,never had one go this wrong.

  • @davidduff9871

    Maybe he was trying to redirect the tree. The tree was leaning right and he was trying to push it left??

  • @Beezzz000

    Maybe the lumberjack used the tractor instead of a wedge at the horizontal cut. Or the chainsaw got stuck from the weight of the tree and the tractor was used to release the tree weight. Or the tractor was the insurance policy that the tree would fall in the desired direction. Good photo to share for all.

    I seen that photo on 9 of the offroad tractor groups I'm in. Yep I think he had the bucket on the tree a little too hard and as he was cutting the tree split and up goes the tractor. I hope who ever it is got that nice tractor down with no damage!! Good video was honestly hoping you were the owner of the poor tractor I wanted to find out if it got down safe

  • @twistedlimb4053

    Looks like his notching was messed up from the get go. Might be different from a different angle but the lower cut on his face notch looks tipped to the back of the tree and his back cut came in at dead even to the lower cut. All that poor tree could do was go where it got sent and the tractor did his best to do its job.
