Hi Grant - great to hear from you and it really was a very nice evening :) Hope you are enjoying the start of our Spring season and as always, good luck on the water and thanks for tuning in
I really enjoy your videos. I'm a blind Buffalo New York resident and really enjoy your videos they are very descriptive of the same types of fish or fishing that I would do here on my side of the river. Wish you all the best with your products!
Great to hear from you in Buffalo NY - we're neighbors :) Glad you are enjoying our videos and hope you are able to get out on the water and do some fishing this Spring :) (PS> Sorry to hear about your blindness and we wish you all the best!)
Hi Vito - great to hear form you and glad you enjoyed this steelhead trout episode and our other videos :) Good luck on the water Vito - hope your Spring is off to a nice start :)
Hi Aidan - great to hear from you in Seattle - would love to make another trip out West....perhaps next year...we have Cape Cod and The Florida Keys lined up for this year already :)
Hi Mark - great to hear from you in Portland and glad you enjoyed this steelhead trout episode - also, many thanks for your great feedback - much appreciated :)
April 5th is our trout opener in IL. I've always been the type to go heavy on the lb test juust in case. My daughter and I will be trying out our new ultra light gear. Hopefully we've seen the last of the dreadful weather. Wish us luck.
Great to hear form you in IL - April 5th is just around the corner - hope you and your daughter have a great day of trout fishing - excellent time to spend quality time together :)
have u ever fished from a kayak for rainbows? love the videos ivo, very informative. you seem like a very cool guy, and would give anything to be fishing beside u. keep the great videos commin
I have not fished from a kayak yet, but if things work out this summer, we will try to do an episode fishing form a canoe :) So glad you are enjoying our videos and thanks for the nice feedback and kind words....it is very much appreciated
***** - Indeed! Also Naugatuck River, they stock Atlantic salmon in it, but there are plenty of trout in Farmington river as well as the many ponds and lakes in Northwest CT are regularly stocked with rainbow trout.
Many thanks for a great vid for is boat less trout/salmon followers. Were those 2 hatchery or wild? I was looking for the adipose fin but think it was clipped? Thanks again and would love to see more of this!!!
Ivo great video i watch you guys all the time I have a few ?s first how far up the line do you put your sinker is it a sliding sinker and do you use a split shot as a stoper also would the roe bag work on a lake or do you need the current to make it work
Great to hear for you waylonfna01 and thanks for tuning into our episodes :) You can use roe bags in a lake and they will work for you. The way we set up our roe bag rig is with the sinker tied to the bottom and then the roe bag tied to a hook which hangs above the sinker (we do not use a sliding sinker rig)
Hi thundermist guys, I was curious if you'd recommend roe bags over fishing plain roe, and what your opinion is on fishing roe under a float versus bottom bouncing?
Hi Jeremiah - when fishing for trout, roe bags would be our go-to bait. Float fishing with a roe bag is also very effective when fishing shallow water or suspended fish :)
Hey Ivo, nice to see you making some more trout videos! What's the best way to catch stocked rainbow trout on small still waters? I fished all day yesterday with power bait, spinners and worms but I didn't get a bite :( looking forward to your thundermist line coming out as well!
Hi Aidan - I see you tried spinners and they usually work (such as a mepps or a panther martin - small spinners). You can also try small casting spoons (1/4 oz) and there is one other bait you can try and that is corn. Try using corn that you get out of a can from your local grocery store and just put 2 or 3 kernels on a hook - good luck Aidan and if all goes well, the new Thundermist premium quality braided line will be released in a few weeks :)
Use shrimp! I have a small lake I fish in that's in town when I can't get into the beautiful black hills here is south Dakota. I seen people using all the same stuff you were talking about so I decided to try something different. I can't keep the trout off the hook when I started using shrimp. I'm talking 5 pounders. It's amazing!!
great videos and great product. I have purchased many T swivels from your site and love them. Where is the best place to park and hike to the river in Queenston? Thanks!
best to fish the shoreline at the boat launch - lots of room there and great fishing....just go to the end of Dumfries st and continue down dirt road to the boat launch area - good luck :)
Glad you enjoyed this steelhead episode :) Yes, I like to attach fluorocarbon line to my main line that leads to my T-Turn and then I use about a foot of Fluorocarbon line from my T-Turn to my sinker :)
Hi Ivo, I just fished this very spot this past weekend but the current was flowing past me from left to right. I had to cast to the downstream side of where I was standing in order to get the bait to drift past me. Does the current direction change on this river? I had no luck and neither did the others I saw fishing this area that day. My guess is the current direction made the difference.
Hi Fred - sometimes there is a back current which does go the opposite way, and generally, it is closer to shore - you should be able to cast out just a bit further to get into the main current - good luck next time - hope you have a great day out there :)
***** It turns out I was fishing just a bit to the south from where you were. Huge difference since there is a substantial back eddy which extends out a couple of hundred feet from shore. The current in this eddy actually goes back up river and is much faster than where you were. Looking forward to trying again. How much more good shore steelhead / rainbow season do you think that spot will provide?
Fred Stratton Hi Fred - I know exactly where you were fishing, next to the boat ramp and although there is a back eddy there, that is actually a very good spot. In the fall, it is lined with people :) Most of April should still be good for Rainbows - after that, the Lake Trout move in :)
Hi Matt - suggest jigging for them - use a jig and artificial minnow combo (like the Flexi Jig) or use a jigging spoon (such as the Boa Jig'r) Both of these will work well for you as will a bucktail jig. Also, if you have a good drift going, you can even use a Viper Spoon :)
hi Ivo, awesome video. One question, 1) how long is your sinker from your swivel ? 2) and also besides the floro line from your swivel to your hook and sinker. are you using any floro line from your three way swivel to the main line? 3) if so, how long and how did you attach your main line to it?
Hi Gabriel glad you enjoyed this trout episode :) I like to run about a foot of line from my T-Turn to my sinker. I also like to run a fluorocarbon leader off my main line to my T-Turn and as a genera rule, I like to use about twice the length of my rod as my leader (i.e. if my rod is 7 feet long, I will have about a 14 foot leader line :)
I cant believe theres open water in Niagera River is that near Niagera on the lake? Years ago we went there whirlpool jet boating....anyways Lake Champlain theres still people going on with vehicles and some say ice is so thick the auger wont cut through!!! Cant wait to go fishing and I think Im going to use your tricks with 3 way swivels... how do you make the mesh bag where do you get those? can we use clementine bag mesh? Do you think you will come fish Lake Champlain NY ?
Hi there Adk - great to hear from you in NY - this trout episode was filmed on the lower Niagara river in Queenston, which is not far from Niagara on the lake. The Niagara River has a strong current and thus does not freeze over. You are going to love using the T-Turn swivel as it allows you to fish tangle free and free of line twist as well :) The mesh used to tie roe bags can be bought at your local tackle shop (never tried clementine bag mesh). Perhaps some day we will fish Lake Champlain, but in the meanwhile, here is one of our videos that will show you how to tie your own roe bags: How to Tie Roe Bags
***** Thanks for the reply I knew the current was strong near the falls and whirlpool but down river thought it would freeze as the St Lawrence has a strong current but it freezes but I saw video and your professional! Yes Lake Champlain is very popular with Bass Tourneys the pros with there $100,000 boats that can cover the whole lake in 2 hrs haha just youtube it... Do you have a store that accepts paypal to buy your products? Thanks to your son Corrado I found your channel would love to see him and Saskia fish with you bet you would sell a ton of lures!!!
Adk Beau Nice to hear from you and you certainly can buy from our online store and use paypal :) As for Corrado and Saskia, maybe we can get them out some day, but they are always travelling and so busy :)
Great video, Ivo! I was wondering, what is the advantage to using roe bags vs. straight up salmon roe, and will it only work in areas with larger trout?
The roe bags advantage is that you can tie a few eggs in a sack - if you poke a single salon egg, it will burst on you - also, the roe bags will catch you all sizes of trout, even small ones :)
Glad you enjoyed this steelhead trout episode :) Some tackle shops do sell roe bags but if not, you can easily make your own - here is one of our short videos which will show you exactly how to tie them :) How to Tie Roe Bags
Hi Nate - in the case of a lake with little or no current, you can still sue roe bags, but you would end up still fishing as opposed to bottom bouncing... you should still do well though - you can use the same rig :)
I use a bobber and hook with a roe bag or 3 or 4 single eggs on it. Cast upstream and let the current take it, even if there is a slow run it is still good. Just my Op.
my grandpa went to Racine, Wisconsin with his son Zak, and caught a limit of Stealhead in one day! They stayed for 2 days. My grandpa caught a 17 pound stealhead.
Hi Rob - sorry for the delay.....I somehow did not see your comment...Peters Tackle in St. Catharines or Erie Tracker in Port Colborne or Fishing World or Bills B&T in Hamilton:)
Suggest going down with about about 3 - 4 feet below your float - a small split shot is all you will need for weight, as your bobber will help you gain the casting distance. the split shot can be a foot above your hooks and the swivel can be 2 feet above your split shot - good luck :)
Vanouhi I personally like to have my leader line about twice the length of my main line...here is one of our quick tips videos giving a quick demo....ua-cam.com/video/QsuFwO002zI/v-deo.html
Great to hear from you in Windsor - I was just there fishing the Detroit river for early season walleye :) I have not put a "stinger" type hook under my roe bag as it is not really needed in that case. Good luck on the water
Hi, just to clarify, a steelhead is a "sea-run" rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and a lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush; actually a char) is a completely different species.
Its all the same in here(as i rub my tummy), i feel the question your really asking is, what fish tastes better?(as i rub my tummy). Well both so catch them both.
I like to use a uni-knot and here is a short video that will show you how easy it is to tie and its very effective :) How to Tie a Uni Knot - How to Tie 2 Fishing Lines Together
Braydon Swartz We tied our own roe bags but most local tackle shops should carry them - especially if trout are a main target in that area :) ua-cam.com/video/96l1sUjYdvI/v-deo.html
Im going .... Fishing in two says..... Im a crappie an a bass an alligator gar.. I wanna try crappie fishing I bought a chrome silver lure .. its kinda small .. an I think it would be good .. do have any jigs or lure for crappie
Hello Ivo its mike again and I was just wondering. How do you set your drag so its not to tight, or for that matter to loose. How do you know??? Thanks :>)
Hi Michael - the drag should be tight enough so that when you pull on your line, it should give a bit - so tighten it to the point where it doesn't give at all and then back off on it until such time that it gives a bit. This will allow for a solid hook set, but yet not break you off. When you are fighting the fish, you can then loosen up on your drag a bit :) Tips on Using your Drag, Fish Fighting Tips, and Tips on Rod Positioning
hi Ivo, great to talk to you again. what is your favourite steelhead spot within 2 hours of the gta. what is your favourite steelhead lures, mine is a roe bag.
+reelfishing My best steelhead spot would be the Niagara River - either the upper or the lower as they are both great and I'm with you on the roe bag as being one of the best baits
Hi ivo next Thursday I'm going up to parry sound Ontario for a week on star lake. It has white suckers, bullheads, pike, rainbow and lake trout, small and largemouth bass, perch, rock bass, sunfish, and fisheries of Ontario recently put in brown trout baby's two years ago. The lake has marshy areas rocky depth is up two 50 feet deep in main part of lake and a river that is about 5 km and leads to a 5 foot waterfall and then a pool were we have caught baby pike.what spots would you recompensed for trout??? Want to cook up some dinner! If you want more info get the ifish Ontario app if you have a smartphone. Search star lake (zone 18)
Do you guys wet your hands before handling the fish? If you plan on releasing, then you should. You might already know this, but you can damage the fish if you don't.
Hi Tim - you are right, just down from the dock area - that whole are is good trout fishing :) Peters Tackle and Erie tracker locally, carry the t-turns and if you are in the USA, Dicks Sporting goods and Gander Mountain also carry them, as do many other shops. If you can not find them anywhere, you can always order on line from Thundermist Lure Company :)
This spot is right off of the Niagara Parkway as you get into Fort Erie - if you are looking for an easy to find area, just look for Nichols Marine as there is a public parking lot right beside them and you can fish off the rocks or just off to the side of them. An easy way to find this spot is to take the Bertie Road Exit off the QEW. Take it right to the end...it ends at Nichols Marine :) Make a left and then a quick right into the parking lot - good luck
Hi Young Buck - I must be having a tough night....this episode was actually filmed in Queenston....we did another episode in Fort Erie and I accidentally thought you were asking about that one - sorry about that :) The spot in this episode, is just to the left of the dock at Queenston - on the other side of the Jet Boat dock. That whole area both to the right of the dock and to the left of the dock, is all good :) Also, as for the T-Turns (sorry I missed that part of your question last time as well) if your local store doesn't have them, most locations of Dicks Sporting Goods (not all, but most) have them and same goes for Gander Mountain. Otherwise, you can get them on line from Tackle Direct or Amazon or from Thundermist Lure Company. Good fishing
Nice video! Very informative and a couple of nice fish caught. Thanks for positing the videos.
Glad you enjoyed this steelhead trout episode and thanks for tuning in :)

It turns out I was fishing just a bit to the south from where you were.

***** Thanks for the reply I knew the current was strong near the falls and whirlpool but down river thought it would freeze as the St Lawrence has a strong current but it freezes but I saw video and your professional! Do you end up snagging a lot using this technique? Rivers by me have so many snags
you can get snagged up...it's important to stay focused and just bounce your sinker along the bottom, in order to avoid snags :)
Great video, Ivo! I was wondering, what is the advantage to using roe bags vs. straight up salmon roe, and will it only work in areas with larger trout?
The roe bags advantage is that you can tie a few eggs in a sack - if you poke a single salon egg, it will burst on you - also, the roe bags will catch you all sizes of trout, even small ones :)
okay, thanks! I will have to try those on some of my local rivers and streams
Have you ever used a spoon like the viper in situations like this? I could see it working very well.
We have drifted with the viper spoon for trout and the SP1 size is perfect :)
Going fly fishing today for some trout wish me luck
Good luck Jacob :)

Hi Chris - it is excellent - right in front of Lewiston NY :) Many angels fish the shoreline there

When will the thundermist braided fishing line be released?
Hi Brad - the manufacturing is just being finalized soon - so we do not have a firm date yet, but most likely in the next 2 - 3 weeks :)
We are planning on making a pit stop in that area last week of march. is there any bait/tackle shops you would recommend.
Hi Rob - sorry for the delay.....I somehow did not see your comment...Peters Tackle in St. Catharines or Erie Tracker in Port Colborne or Fishing World or Bills B&T in Hamilton:)
Ivo, Is this the niagara riverÉ
if you wanna float fish how long of a leader and how long distance from your float to your swivel and size shot ?
Suggest going down with about about 3 - 4 feet below your float - a small split shot is all you will need for weight, as your bobber will help you gain the casting distance. the split shot can be a foot above your hooks and the swivel can be 2 feet above your split shot - good luck :)

Where did you get the ROE BAGS?
Braydon Swartz We tied our own roe bags but most local tackle shops should carry them - especially if trout are a main target in that area :) ua-cam.com/video/96l1sUjYdvI/v-deo.html

It april and still frozen on the red lake river in Crookston MN
Great to hear from MN - plenty of great fishing there and the warm weather is just around the corner :)
Are those salmon eggs from a jar ties in a net mesh ???.
Hi Stefano - we had our own salmon eggs but they would be the same as the natural ones you can buy in a jar :) Good luck trout fishing :)
what are you useing
Hi Jennifer - in this steelhead episode, I was using roe bags which is salmon eggs tied in a small sack :)
hi Ivo, great to talk to you again. what is your favourite steelhead spot within 2 hours of the gta. what is your favourite steelhead lures, mine is a roe bag.
Look for drop offs that drop into deeper water and fish the break :) Good luck
Where are you guys at?
We were trout fishing in the lower Niagara River in Queenston Ontario - opposite to Lewiston NY
oh, okay thanks i thought you were in the middle of the states and was wounder how you were trout fishing! haha but now i know thanks!!
Do you guys wet your hands before handling the fish? If you plan on releasing, then you should. You might already know this, but you can damage the fish if you don't.
Thanks for sharing your tips with us :)

Glad you're enjoying our videos and thanks for taking time to write to us :)
I find brown trout in my sewers i even seen one in the toilet and it got me from behind if your not careful they might wipe you !
Where about in Queens ton, down at the dock? Where can I get your T Turn swivels in KW? Thanks.
***** is it near nigrapark way ?? did you have to go down or is it better to go to river frontage road
Take it right to the end...it ends at Nichols Marine :) Make a left and then a quick right into the parking lot - good luck
so this area whereyou guys shot this isnt in queenston is this spot just before the hydo electic station sorry for all the question but thanks Ivo

WET YOUR HANDS!!!!! Sheesh. How NOT to catch trout from shore...
They ate it.
Min 19 inch to keep a steelhead. there is no meat in this fish. Release it .
Heh you wouldn't want to see the ones we have to keep then! Have to eat two and make a few sides just for a meal :)
Hi Nancy - thanks for your feedback. Here in Ontario, we do not have such a size limit. Hope your Spring is going well :)
put that fish back in the f***ING water
If you quit talking so much you'd probably catch more.
