The BEST Credit Card Trifecta You've Never Heard Of

  • Today, I'll be presenting a new and improved credit card trifecta setup that you’ve probably never heard of.
    There are so many great credit card trifectas out there! Three seems to be the magic number for credit card setups, whether it be the Amex Trifecta, the Chase Trifecta, or some other Trifecta.
    But with changing consumer habits and countless credit cards to choose from, new and improved setups can potentially get you more value than the tried-and-true cards of the past.
    I’m sure many of you have noticed the increasing access of mobile wallet payments at your favorite retail stores, grocery stores, gas stations, and even some restaurants!
    That’s because mobile wallets are a convenient way to leave our credit cards at home but still have access to them, just like we always have for our everyday purchases.
    And since mobile wallets cover multiple categories, traditional credit card categories that we’re familiar with can be lumped into one single category, the mobile wallet category, this can be covered into a new category, the mobile wallet category!
    Of course, mobile wallets aren’t accepted everywhere, and these exceptions will be how we choose the other 2 cards in our trifecta.
    The first card in the trifecta is the US Bank Altitude Reserve card, where you get 3X points back for mobile wallet purchases. This includes Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Pay. These points can be redeemed using the Altitude Rewards portal or by using Real-Time Rewards for a redemption rate of 1.5cpp, totaling a value of 4.5X points back on your mobile wallet spending! This card does come with a $400 annual fee, but it has an easy-to-use $325 annual statement credit for eligible dining and travel purchases, lowering the effective annual fee to just $75.
    The second card in the trifecta is the Bilt Mastercard. Some restaurants do not have the option to use mobile wallets to pay while dining in, or it may be inconvenient to do so, so we need a card with a great dining multiplier. This card earns 3X points back on dining, 2X on travel, 1X on rent, and 1X points back on everything else for no annual fee. The points can be transferred out to transfer partners for elevated value, most notably American Airlines and World of Hyatt.
    The third card in the trifecta is the Paypal Mastercard to cover online shopping where mobile wallets are not accepted which gets you 3% cash back on Paypal purchases and 2% cash back on everything else for no annual fee.
    What do you think of this Trifecta - is this something that you would use? Let me know in the comments below!

    Another unique plus with USB AR is when travelling abroad and making payments using mobile wallet not only do you save on foreign transaction fees but you also get 4.5% effect cash back which is fantastic if you ask me considering how much we end up paying on vacations. Most European and many Asian countries accept Mobile wallet payments everywhere. In my last European vacation was able to use mobile wallet payments every single place.

      That's great to hear that it's so flexible to use abroad! I'm not surprised given that it's a VISA card, and Europe established NFC payments way before the US did so I'm glad it's able to be used much more universally there!

    I always enjoy seeing different setup options. It's easy to say AmEx or Chase trifecta or bust, but there are so many different combinations that could work for people out there. I recently did a comprehensive analysis of my household's spending, and I'm going to try to find the best setup. I have a lot of cards, but I have to admit that I signed up for them due to FOMO and feeling that that's what I should do.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  11 місяців тому

      That's great! Yeah, everyone knows the Amex and Chase Trifecta, but like you said, everyone's setup (or trifecta) is going to be different based on their household's spending patterns. I think it's really smart to keep re-evaluating your expenses and figure out how you can tweak your current credit card setup so that it can be optimized for your individual situation. Having a lot of cards is ok, but if they have annual fees, that's when it's important to make a keep or cancel decision. Expense tracking is the first step towards an amazing credit card setup!!

      As long as you have a another credit card with US bank you can upgrade it to the AR after a year and still receive the bonus. It’s not very well know. I got mine a couple months ago even though imma at 7/24 and got the 50,000 bonus points and redeemed it for cash back using RTT. So basically two bonuses for one card❤️

      @@JJ_Zodiac Hmm, interesting! I didn't know that you can upgrade to the AR and still receive the SUB. That's definitely something that's not typical with product changes, but it sounds like that may be the go-to strategy if I'm initially denied for this card. Thanks for the tip!

    Nice thinking out of the box! Great set-up, seems like the anchor of this trifecta being the AR with an effective 4.5x for mobile wallet purchases is excellent. I guess the main drawback here is US Bank's reputation for (a) being too stringent and denying applicants even with good scores, (b) giving low limits, and (c) doing hard pulls on credit limit increase requests. That makes for a tough comparison with the much more reasonable Chase, Amex, BOA, etc...

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  11 місяців тому

      Thanks! Yeah, I totally agree with you. US Bank is notorious for being very picky when it comes to applicants, especially those of us with a lot of cards already, and certainly for those of us with a lot of recent inquiries and new accounts. On paper, it sounds like a great setup, but in practice, it all comes down to getting approved for that Altitude Reserve card!!

    Nice unique idea Stan 👍 Thanks for thinking outside the box. For me USB AR is a life saver Player 2 card as almost all locations my P2 has to make payment she can use Mobile wallet payments. Also USB always gives 5k points retention offer every year ( I just got one) making effective annual fees $0 assuming one uses points for real-time rewards. Combining USB AR with BoA Customized Cash covers all retail payments made in-person (using Mobile wallet) or online . Add BoA Premium travel card means you can get 2.62% on everything else categories. So that is also a great combination. The biggest issue is how hard it is to get USB AR as USB was a PITA to deal with when you are a new customer. I had to get a USB Cash Plus card with $500 credit limit and wait 6 months (gardening period) before being approved for USB AR. (this is wilth a 800 plus credit score).

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  11 місяців тому +1

      Thanks man! Yeah, I'm really liking how the US Bank Altitude Reserve card really offers a great 1-card package to tackle the mobile wallet category at 4.5X. Nice to know they also give retention offers as well! Yeah, I think if I were to implement this setup, using the CCR cards to cover online shopping or gas would be great options, and the PR card would be an amazing catch-all card for the everything else category. I'm thinking about getting this card in the near future, but I know US Bank it particularly difficult with new customers as you mentioned. Did you establish a relationship with them before getting the USB Cash Plus card? Or did you go USB Cash Plus, wait 6 months, and then applied for the USB AR after that? $500 CL is trash lol!

    • @RemGb10
      @RemGb10 11 місяців тому

      @@TheCreditFrog I used the USB Cash+ (which is great for 5% on utility payments) to establish relationship (Was fuming internally at the insult of $500 credit limit with my 20+ year credit history and 800+ score) and then waited 6 months before applying for USB AR (was gardening the entire period as they are very enquiry sensitive). Was denied initially and later got it through Recon. Felt like reaching the holy grail as it was a life saver with simplifying things for P2 and 4.5% cashback on most in-person purchases. I think officially they may have removed the pre-existing relationship critiera for USB AR recently. Good Luck. If you do get the Altitude Reserve it IMHO is the best rewarding card you can get due to how prevalent mobile wallet payment is.

    This is actually a very interesting approach to solving this problem. Focusing on high cash back %s for individual categories means that you somehow have to cram all possible everyday purchase categories + travel into three cards. This approach avoids that problem by giving practically unlimited 4.5% on everything. The only issue I see is that the remaining $75 annual fee on the USB AR means you have to spend $1667 just to break even, before even earning cash back at all. The other major "issue" would be being reliant on mobile wallets = being reliant on your smartphone. That reason alone would be why I personally wouldn't use this setup-I'm trying to be less reliant on this device.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  11 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, I hear you! We're definitely becoming increasingly dependent on our smartphones, and that can be a good or a bad thing, depending on your point of view. It's true that there's a minimum spend to "break-even" as you pointed out, but for us credit card enthusiasts who bang out multiple SUBs in a year, $1,667 in one year is very easy to do. With this setup in particular, I think it's super important to have a solid catch-all category card, whether it be that PayPal MC or some other 2X/2% card, as you can carry that physical card around with you to ensure you're getting at least something back should the mobile wallet fail for whatever reason. Great insight Ian!

    Hello Stan, thanks for the knowledge. Just wondering which card would you use for phone bills and other utilities such as medical bills in this set up?

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  5 днів тому +1

      Sure! So for phone bills and utilities, the US Bank Cash+ will get you the best return at 5% for your phone bills and utilities. The Chase Ink Cash is also a nice option. For this particular setup, it would fall under the catch all card so if you could use Paypal as a payment option, that would be helpful, but if not you'd have to choose another 2% card since the Paypal MC was recently nerfed and now (or will soon) only get you 1.5% cash back on everything else. As for your medical bills, it would also be on a catch-all card, unless of course, you're able to pay this using Apple Pay, in which case I'd use the USBAR for mobile wallet 3X.

    The USBank Altitude Reserve is one of those cards where I seriously scrutinize it, and always comes out ahead. The big thing is this is *the* card to use at Costco, due to mobile wallet spend. If they throttled the mobile wallet spend (limit to $5-6k a year, suppose), it should be reevaluated as part of your portfolio.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  11 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, I hope they never throttle the spend because that would seriously hinder the card! I've always used the BofA CCR for Costco since I get 3.5% cash back ($2,500 cap/quarter), but with the USB AR, the uncapped 4.5X is so much better since you can redeem the points using RTR. An all around great card, but I wish it was more accessible since US Bank is tricky when it comes to credit card applications.

    How about the physical card Signature cash back+? You get to choose the 5% in 2 categories which I’m planning on restaurants and Gas Stations. 2% in one category. All chosen in each quarterly by the cardholder. 😊

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  8 місяців тому

      Yeah, David. The US Bank Cash+ card is a great option! But I think the 5% categories are somewhat less common. You can choose one 2% category out of gas, restaurants, or groceries. But there are other cards that can get you 5% back in those categories too! You’d just have to split the spend across different cards.

      Although I’m not sure if Expedia is covered under the 3X multiplier, Expedia does accept Apple Pay, which would count in the 3X mobile wallet category!

    @stan if you had to do a core setup that including only cards that use transferable points, what would you choose. Prerequisites would be lounge access, primary cdw, global entry, elevated multipliers in as many categories as possible with as few cards as possible, a catchall and a low price.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  7 місяців тому

      Ooh, what a fun question! I would go with these 3: C1VX, C1 Savor One, and WF Autograph. You get lounge access, primary auto CDW, TSA Pre/GE, and catch-all card all on the Venture X. You get dining, grocery, entertainment, and streaming on the C1S1 at 3X. You get travel, transit, gas, and cell phone at 3X on the Autograph, including cell phone protection. WF Autograph is getting transfer partners, but obviously unknown at this point. But this would be my setup with the prereqs you said with total AF of $395 on the C1VX (+$5 EAF if you want to play that game)!

I have no experience with them (yet) so I'm curious if you like the RTR feature and if it's as easy to use as they say. I wish that the other cards could transfer their points to the AR, then your setup would probably be a contender the classic Chase and Amex Trifecta!

    • @dhruvsriv789
      @dhruvsriv789 11 місяців тому

      @TheCreditFrog I definitely love it, and I'm glad to have chosen this over VentureX. The biggest positive is getting 4.5× multiplier on digital wallet payments (3× rewards with digital wallet and 1 reward being 1.5c worth).
      RTR is great except for booking hotels where you need to have a minimum spend. But otherwise, there are no issues at all.
      It's not good for travel perks, though, and low starting credit limit. 5k in my case.

    Honest question, how would real time rewards be 4.5% when your not getting the base 3% because your making your purchase with points? I get that your technically redeeming the purchase you got the points for at 4.5% but then you miss out on 3% when you redeem it for another purchase. Wouldn’t you gain 1.5% by redeeming it for cash back of redeeming for a purchase?

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  10 місяців тому

      I can see your thought process with that. I value the redemption at 4.5X because you're redeeming your original 3X points at a value of 1.5X. Yes, you don't receive 3X points on that purchase, but you're getting 4.5X value back from the redemption specifically. IMO, the 3X points that you would have received from the purchase doesn't count because once you redeem your points for that purchase, it technically ceases to exist and only the redemption value needs to be calculated.
