I have a MFC-L3750CDW. Always use compatible cartridges. I have a fairly new black cartridge in the machine, which was working fine. I had a power cut for about three hours. When the power came back on the machine was telling me to insert a new black cartridge. Followed the other videos I have seen about how to reset the toner but all to no avail. Had resigned myself to buying a new cartridge. I fortunately still had the previously used empty cartridge. I followed your advice, which was easy and it worked perfectly! I can't thank you enough for this advice. There must be thousands of frustrated people out there trying frantically to reset their printers who don't know about this.
I had exactly the same issue, every time we have a power outage, same error. Same goes if you move your printer, it will dislodge and no longer recognise the toner. I remove the cartridges, pack them carefully so they don't move, then reinstall once printer is in place, even if only moving a few metres
@@diannecroucher7821 I have had the power go out and/or cut off many times over the past year that I had this printer, and never once did I get this message until today. And today's power cut off was literally a millisecond. I have tried every fix they have offered to no avail. Unfortunately, I do not have any old, empty cartridges that are the same as the cartridges I have in the printer now. So, I will have to wait until I can get a new set. So frustrating.
Thank you for posting this very helpful video. YES, the procedure you explained works perfectly! I encountered this "Toner Not Detected" issue after replacing my original Black toner cartridge with an after-market (non-genuine) unit. Thankfully, the after-market seller had included a little instruction sheet in the box with the exact same instructions as you presented in this video. And it worked like a charm. 🙂
Consumer protection agencies should fine printer companies for such monopolizing practices that limit consumers' buying options.

Thank you, sir. You just saved me a lot of money - I tried replacing the batteries in my 3rd party toner chips to no avail, but your solution made it happen. Brother should be ashamed of themselves for screwing over their customers. I'll keep this unit going with 3rd party cartridges as long as I can!

This has been so helpful. I've wasted and/or returned countless toner cartridges because I didn't know my printers (I have both the MFC3750 and 3770) my printers were lying to me. I've eventually stumbled into resolving the "no cartridge" problem without knowing how I did it.

Wow, it never occured to me, that the chip on those cartridges can fail.
Even though I have different Brother Printer (much smaller model) the Error was the same.
Your solution worked perfectly and I didn't even have to remove any screws, because the chip is just clipped in and you simply have to bend a small plastic nook.

No way! My printer has not worked in quote some time due to me thinking my black cartridge was empty but I could see 40% left. So first I solved the cartridge reset and then I had the Cannot Detect message. I watched your video, but there were two obstacles: I didn't think I had a blue Brother cartridge to replace my non-Brother blue cartridge chip and I thought I wouldn't be able to change the chip....seemed to technical or mechanical. So I walk to the carport to look in my trunk for an old cartridge and there sitting on my windowsill was a very old Brother blue cartridge! Obstacle one miraculously removed! Then I remove the microchip but I had to be careful not to break it., becuase I break stuff easy I got it out and place sit into the non-Brother cartridge and it works after all this time!!! Thank you so much. Not only did I fix my printer, but I increased my confidence that I could do something kind of technical/mechanical with an electronic part like this. THANK YOU!!!

I had another set of toner cartages from another 3rd party manufacture and it worked. I too was upset as I tossed my original cartages. This is a great fix if you do not have the originals and do not want to pay $200-$300 for new ones. Ebay does have some empty originals.

I have been getting so annoyed at this bloody printer error. I cannot for the life of me find my original black toner but so far so good with the generic until I can get one posted in (the joys of living in the country)
Just use the chip from any old used or new cartridge of the same colour. Then pull the working chip out and use it in any subsequent replacement cartridge.

I got a warning on my 3 year old MFC L3750 that my waste toner box was full. Ordered a new one, replaced it, but still had the same error. Turned out that the sensor contacts on the right side are connected to the PCB on the right with springs pressing on blank wires on the back of the PCB. Loosened up the PCB, used some contact spray, jiggled the PCB a little as to allow the springs to make contact again and put everything together again. Works like a charm again.

So yeah... the company "Brother" did a brotherly thing and sent out an update to fu , , customers out of being able to buy MUCH cheaper toner ... I wish I could slap their COO for trying to force ppl into getting screwed with their over priced toner.... won't be buying any more Brother products in the future. Yes unfortunately though if you choose to buy any other manufacturer you will have to use genuine toner cartridges there as well. Brother is the only one that lets you opt-out of software/firmware updates. You must do this at the moment you pull the brand new printer out of the box and set it up unfortunately most people don't pay attention to the questions they're being asked when installing the driver on the PC and phone and ipads and everyone does says yes yes yes give me updates. This is why you should buy your new printers from a printer repairer or specialist printer company not Amazon Kmart Walmart Harvey Norman officeworks. Your also making the assumption your generic toner chip is made properly.
And it WORKED!! I'll send you a couple bucks on pay pall. Thank you for helping me outsmart a predatory business that obviously could be selling toner for fair prices but instead wants to screw people. Typical business these days. Money over ethics. That's what they teach these days in business school. I know I'm a grad... again thanks though. I hope everyone sends you a couple dollars for taking the time to post this and help people out.

Great video but for some reason it didnt work for me. I tried and watched many other videos but nothing worked. Surprisingly, what did work was to just unplug the printer for 30 seconds. Hope this helps avoid the frustration

Great idea! May I know which third party catridge you are using? In my case, my third party chartridge's chip is not placed like the original. However, this solution is very helpful because I will get the third party catridge that resembles the original Brother catridge. Thanks so much!
I notice the MFP-L3745CDW (and probably all of them) rely on counters to tell you when to replace the toner, drum transfer belt and waste collection. So nothing relies on detection of toner or wearing of parts?
I remember the old LaserWriters which used a belt. There was the write protect tab (remember those?) on the belt. When the write protector tab wore out you were told to replace the toner cartridge. A temporary remedy was to stick a new write protect tab over the worn one and you can still use the cartridge until the toner ran out.
In newer machines, you got a little plastic box with the drum, this box was a counter which counted how many times it was used.

Hi, Terry. My MFC-3750CDW gave me a similar message - "No Toner - Open the Top Cover, then install toner cartridge". But this happened when the printer was working fine WITH its original cartridges! I hadn't removed them since I got the machine. If you or any of your subscribers have and ideas, I would appreciate hearing them.
This typically happens when you have reused your genuine toner.

Go to your community recycling centre and ask for them back. Go to your local hospital and ask where their printer cartridge recycling bin is, most are at loading docks where the main bins are

This is very common when the suicide battery on the chip is almost flat

Unfortunately i've just encountered this problem with my magenta non-standard cartridge. I don't have the genuine cartridges anymore, and removing the battery hasn't worked. Do you happen to have any old magenta cartridges/chips you could send me perhaps? Save me buying another cartridge.
I have a slightly different problem. I have the MFC-L3750CDW. I have genuine cartridges. My error screen constantly reads "One or more toner cartridges are not detected. Pull out and reinsert all 4 Toner Cartridges" I remove all 4 toners and replace them back in. It will then print nicely for the first print, then with the second print the page comes out all rainbow stripes long ways donw the middle of the page along with what im printing and the message comes up again. Im getting pretty sick of always lifting the top cover and having to re insert all the cartidges every time i print something. Any ideas on what i need to do. Cheers
I had the same issue. But I did not have a replacement chip. I took the battery out and waited 20sek. The I the reset the toner counter and it worked.
Can you write how to reset the toner counter?
@@MarekWlizlo I did it the same way as described in the video but I took out the battery first, waited 10sek then pu the battery back. Open the lid, press return and then X on the printer.

I tossed my genuine cartridge already. But if I had a genuine standard yield cartridge, would the chip work if I'm replacing it with a non-genuine high-yield replacement cartridge?
Any chip of the same colour new unused or used works.. Go raid your cartridge suppliers bin or buy another cartridge and use that chip, Then carry that chip over when required.

Does this solve the issue of new firmwares that brother printers ship with blocking the generic toner? I just bought L2717DW and was curious before I unbox it and set it up.
No, any brand new brother printers must use genuine only toner. My advice is to take the printer back for a refund and look for a good 2nd hand one on FB Marketplace

Well. As a customer that bought a printer and its out warranty, I should in prinsip do what the fuck I want my printer. I could put shit in it. If there is a firmware OTA that degrades the product after the it's sold deliberately stop working because of usage 3 part OEM toners. Brother company should have a problem in Norway. A company can not degrade a product to not working. There are strict laws in Norway. I think I should go Forbrukerrådet and make a case of this company. It is not legal.
Make sure you Start With HP and Samsung and Lexmark 1st.

I have two mfcl3770cdw that came to me with non/genuine toners already (our office for new printers and I got the old for home). I was using EZInk replacements just fine until a power outage last year. When power came back on it was saying no yellow toner. I was able to pop the chip battery out, wait a few seconds, put it back in and it was fixed. Fast forward 6 mon and another power flicker and now it’s saying no yellow or magenta. I tried popping the battery and after that didn’t work I bought a new battery and still no luck. So I have two printers and 10 cartridges that don’t work. Almost $300 for a new set of cartridges, when I can buy a whole new printer for the same price. I’ll never buy another Brother product ever after this.
What else are you going to use? Brother are the last printer manufacturer you can "Get away with non genuine toner" as long as you stick to a few rules. Just imagine if you had 10 genuine toners that would be close to $2800 in toner spent. But more importantly you would have 10 genuine chips you could reuse over and over again in your NotsoEZink and they would never fail because they are genuine. You may be better off with a brand new printer because just like your current printer the brand new printer comes with genuine cartridges. Though those toners are 3/4 Empty BUT more importantly those toners come with Genuine chips that you can use over and over in your non genuine toner. If you had kept your 1st set of toners that came with the printer instead of tossing them in the bin you would not be having the problems your experiencing.
@@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs The printers came to me without original toners. It’s going to cost me $250 for new toners, or $259 for a new printer that comes with ink and the refills are $18. Either way I’m spending $250 that I don’t have.
Nice. But it would only work if I saved the original Brother toners. Mine shows "X's" next to 3 toners. I wonder why mine is doing this 1 year after I've been using aftermarket toner?
Go back and re watch the video you've obviously missed the key points. Have you any old empty toners lying around with chips on them or do you have a new set they're sitting on the shelf with chips on them?
@@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs I don’t have any spare toners. I toss them when they are done. I read there is a small battery in those chips, and you can change them out to get it working.

I’m having a similar problem, except the cartridges I’ve been inserting are brother cartridges. Cyan was fine, magenta was fine, yellow won’t recognize that it’s full. Continues to say no toner. I’m so frustrated.
You need to differentiate between whether the cartridges are being recognised or not. Or if the cartridges are being recognised and you're being told the cartridges are empty. It is two different separate conditions

So the chips don't store the level in the cartridge. Concern is Brother would brick the chips when the cartridge is empty. Doesn't seem to be the case here thankfully.
Yes Brother are not like HP/Canon/Samsung/Lexmark and are more technician and user friendly.

Can you roll back the firmware on the mfc L3750cdw to its original firmware?
No. Don't ever unplug or turn your printer off. Buy new cartridges reuse the chips, move on with your life.
Does the chip not read as empty and will not work?
The chip is to say to say I am brother and I am XXXX cartridge. No levels are recorded like HP Canon Samsung do
same issue, for mine the battery is dead. The printer was sitting in the storage for 2 years

Undo the screw on the cover holding it in place and swap it out.
I had to rip my chip out of the glue and shave a piece off the chip to get it to fit. It totally worked though. Glued the chip into the bad ones spot (where the third party chip was) and done.
Still have the No toner error after doing thing. It shows there's no problem with each color, but says there's no black even though it's a brand new cartridge...
And who did you buy your cartridges from?
@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs same place I've been getting them from for 4 years. I was printing and then it stopped and said I need new toner, installed new one and it kept doing it. I bought new drums thinking that was it and still same... reset all colours, tried all the 'fixes' I could find...

All you're doing is digging yourself a deeper hole. Put everything back the way it was remove all of your new things then do what the printer asks

Then you must have a non genuine chip or you have used your cartridge over and over each time it says it's empty.
Never buying a brother printer again, or if I do just buying a black one. Over $200 for a whole suite of color cartridges from Brother is insane. Thats half the price of the printer! Unfortunately I got rid of the Chips on all my "Geniuine" color cartridges. Guess I'll Ebay this unit and go back to straight black laser printers, to much hassle and expense on this thing.
Actually it's $680 for a set of genuine toners. At $200 there non genuine or fake genuine you have. I myself charge $396 for a set of my non genuine cartridges and my non genuine come with a guarantee to work from start to finish, or we fix or replace them for free. If you're unhappy with this printer then no printer will ever make you happy.
Not sure where my comment went, but its $335 USD for a set of 4 official brother TN227 printer cartridges. My guess is the price your quoting is in a different currency. When the toner cartridges are almost the same price as the printer, you gotta wonder if it's worth it.

That's why the true cost of ownership of your printer in the 1st month is actually almost double but you didn't notice that did you. Ive had this issue twice now and I will never buy another Brother printer again. Ive just orders an Epson portable and will be throwing this one at the tip. Will be warning all family members not to buy this brand also. A pain in the neck when you have taxation and employee documents to print along with legal docs.... am over it.. bye bye Brother. Yes unfortunately if you're not happy with your brother printer then you are going to be even more unhappy with your Epson. You cannot use non genuine cartridges successfully with an Epson anymore. Are you local to Brisbane or the Gold Coast I'll come pick your printer up as you're throwing a completely fully functional printer away to the tip. Choose who you buy your printer cartridges from wisely and you don't get this issue. Buy your printer cartridges from a printer technician and not some online cartridge flogging company.

I have new Toners for $99 each
