    In this episode: Dixie cheers on some squirrels; Dixie carries some fish; and Dixie sweet talks some llamas.

    It has already snowed in the Rockies through Wyoming and Montana in record amounts for August, up to a foot or more. I spent a month in the Sierra in '72 with no resupply, but we ate a lot of trout and blue grouse with rice. Also stinging nettle greens with wild onions. Stinging nettle is rendered tasty with a simple dip into boiling water.

      That's one thing I don't see any of these hikers discuss in their videos, which is foraging. I'm guessing because with their focus on getting the miles in foraging cuts into their miles. As she pointed out at the end of the video, her daily mileage is down through this stretch where they've been fishing, etc.

    • @michaelb1761
      @michaelb1761 6 років тому

      @@tc556guy The amount of extra time you spend on the trail foraging and fishing, it's a losing proposition to in terms of calories to spend time collecting food while hiking. However, in terms of protein and mental pick me up, fish can be a big bonus. I'll also stop to cut some wild onion stalks for added flavor or just something to chew on while hiking too. Basically no effort, no calories, but a nice flavor especially paired with salami and cheddar in my salami burritos.

    One point.... Dixie is in the real world. The rest of us live in a social construct where the most trivial things are deemed to be essential/critical/serious/etc. Having been in the real world where grizzlies, mountain lions, alligators and other critters can kill and eat you, or being alone a couple hundred miles from nowhere and running out of food or water or suffering an injury, gives you a different perspective on what is essential/critical/serious/etc. I haven't seen a late e-mail, the wrong font, not enough ice in a drink, or a typical 2 minute traffic delay kill anyone... but some people make it sound like those things can... I'd love to deposit those folks in a remote forest, remote mountain location, or the Everglades backcountry to give them a reality check!

Idaho this next week to get my legs under me in Priest Lake area. Love your videos. You and your buddies and family are an inspiration! Especially enjoyed the llama meeting. My Friday night: Watching CDT vlogs on one screen, following the CDT on caltopo on the other screen. It's fun seeing where some of these gorgeous views are found. I did a couple hundred miles of the AT about 10 years ago. Life happened, and I haven't hiked since, but this series is prodding the beast from hibernation. I think I'll go for a long walk in the morning...Thanks for your inspiration!

    Whenever I watch your hiking vlogs, I am always filled with so much emotion. I can tell my soul craves experiences like this as I feel so pulled toward exciting views and pushing myself physically. I’ve been following for a while but I’ve never even gone on a hike that is over a mile or two. Regardless though, your positivity and worldview are so similar to my own, and I’m glad to find likeminded people just out there LIVING and experiencing life.

    Good to see you all taking advantage of the resource of fish. Had to be a heavenly meal high up on that pass, but I dunno about packing around fish in griz country. Glad it all worked out. Poor Aaron missed out on more of nature's bounty. The scenery and the lakes/skies are just over the top. Thanks so much! Best wishes for Dakota's healing.

    • @amysthe-wise-one8493
      @amysthe-wise-one8493 6 років тому

      Yeah, I am too, from pushing too hard in Altras earlier this year. (And I'm itching so hard to go out hiking again since I haven't gotten a long one in weeks.) But with plenty of ice, meds, and more ice bags after any exercise so I can get back to hiking in another 2 weeks, once the weather turns a little.

    • @tc556guy
      @tc556guy 6 років тому

      Hoping it doesn't take that long for me to recover. I have one leg that took a lot of abuse since I was young. Sports injuries in school. Bad sprain from stupid stuff like landing wrong coming out the back end of a Humvee 14 years ago. Broke a big toe once just running for the ringing phone when getting out of the shower. Stupid stuff. When I got back into hiking last winter I opted for trailrunners, which was a mistake. Not enough support for all the past abuse. So I bumped up to something with a little more ankle support. Two months ago I'm home sleeping after an overnight shift, and the neighbor calls and wakes me up to inform me that three runaways from a local juvenile detention facility are on our street going door to door. So I jump into something so I don't freak out the little old retired ladies on my block and we're chasing these idiots down peoples backyards on our block. In the process I managed to twist the ankle on that leg that's not so great. Since then I've still been putting in 2-3 hours a day hiking. Pop some ibuprofen, and about a half hour into the hike it stops hurting. But it wasn't getting better. So this week I decided to take a week off and see how well it recovers. Next week, if its no better, I'll maybe actually see my GP. I'm guessing that he'll tell me to lay off hiking for multiple weeks, which sucks because I was hoping to take some time off in September and get in some section hikes before the weather goes bad. Any delays into October and November in my part of the country and you start running into hunting seasons where many sections of our trails are shut down for the various small and large game seasons.
      Good luck to you on your recovery.

    Dixie, in my past backpacking/hiking days I was so focused on what was ahead of me. One time on the trail I stopped and looked back. It was a pivotal (SWIDT?) moment in how I viewed my journey. I know you have probably already addressed this in a previous video but why not carry a pair of cheap water shoes from Walmart to slip on for water crossings? I know it is a few more ounces but I think I would rather do that than walk in wet shoes the rest of the day. You could even slip them on when it rains while you are walking on relatively flat ground.

      Bill Russell; That fishing trip on the CDT would start with the Gila river here in New Mexico. I fish there for the elusive Gila Trout and I keep all non-native species edging out the Gila Trout. I love me some fresh trout for dinner.
