    Love this clip - I've directed quite a few people here to view it. Some quick additions to add some more detail: #8 Expel your air after a dive - give 10 good "huffs" out to get the old air out once on the surface. #9 Restock your oxygen - spend at least twice as long on the surface as your dive time #10 Always dive within your buddies limits - and make sure they know basic rescue and CPR. Cheers!

    I'm from the states, although my parents are from Iceland and England.
    Again thanks for the tips. Freediving is the first sport that I've really been interested in. I'm currently doing a life guard training course in school, hopefully free diving in the near future.

    Good list pretty much same as what i was taught though one of the additional things i learn in my course as to "why to never dive with the snorkel in your mouth" is because as you dive the snorkel will fill up with water. As you resurface you have to blow quite hard into the snorkel to get rid of the water. If in a particular dive your at your limits that last blow could take you to your 10% air lung capacity (or less) and cause you to samba or blackout on the surface.

    I freedive alone, as I haven't yet been able to find a diving buddy (I'm living in Thailand). If there's anyone in Thailand reading this who also needs a dive buddy, let me know :)
    Excellent video! Thanks.

    I started watching your videos beginning of this year sometime. I quickly became hooked, the mysteries of the sea are fascinating! I booked a trip in June to Nassau Bahamas with a few buddies to get a taste of free diving. The waters there are pristine and warm so it made for a good experience. I did however unknowingly break a couple of these rules. Dove after a decent meal and dove with my snorkel in place. Maybe that's why I found it more difficult than it should be to equalize...

    Yeah man. You got the point exactly. exhaling makes you feel more comfortable, as your getting rid of the co2 - however a few seconds later you will find yourself and a desperate situation. Where are you diving ramsus? Believe me, i know all about not being able to find a dive buddy. Where I am in Taiwan, its almost impossible for me to find anyone to dive with.

    Lately all i do is watch freedive movies on youtube. Apparently you do it to because i see your comments everywhere :-). Just saw a nice one in Palau (with some guy named Herbert Nitsch), it seems so full of life over there and beautifull caves. Can't wait for your take on Palau.

    I went freediving a couple weeks ago. Only rule i broke was freediving alone. I know it was dangerous but i never searched for the limits while i was under water. I might take some freediving courses at Nemo 33 here in Belgium.
    Also number 8: Don't drink beverages that contain carbon dioxide (especially the one's with alcohol like beer). Otherwise you will get uncomfortable during your dives having to burp all the time. Keep up the good work, i hope one day to have the honor of diving with you

    You should come to america and dive.There is a place on the colorado river you can dive called willow beach.In the winter time visibility reaches 30 to 45 meters.The depth ranges 6 to 50 meters in some places.There are also some wrecks you can dive sunken cars,planes,and boats.And if you want to dive saltwater california is only a few hours away with kelp forests.Very cool places to film.

    Yes, on my first attempt to dive to 40m, i hit the bottom (the quarry was only 41m deep) got into contact with some junk and ropes on the bottom, got scared, panicked - tried to kick up to the surface was too quickly, injured my lungs... blacked out in the last few meters of the dive. woke up, started coughing huge amounts of blood. Not a good day. I have a video about it is somewhere on my channel. not a very good video.. but its there if your interested.

    Yes, you should exhale slightly to equalize your mask, or you'll suck your eyes out. Freedivers use special low volume masks so less air is required to equalize the mask. As for the snorkel. No - the action of clearing the snorkel can actually cause you to blackout. You need to take a deep breath, and do the recovery breathing process before replacing the snorkel.

  • @freediverhd
    @freediverhd  11 років тому

    Im always looking the sea floor in my videos - and that's considered bad practice. Your right, freedivers should always keep their head and body straight. The reason for this is to do with pressure squeezing the lung and throat area. If you look up, or move your head when your under severe pressure - the tissue just tears - and you get a lung or trachea squeeze. If you keep your head in position, your at less risk of this injury. See my video "Freediving injuries - lung squeeze"

    Hey man. You dont have to worry about Decompression sickness (DCS). DCS is something mostly scuba and tech diver gets from breathing compressed gas underwater. Since your not breathing compressed gas underwater, you have almost no chance of getting DCS.

    Hey man. In terms of increasing your bottom time - remember freediving is all about being efficient. The effort you use, the more 02 you burn, the less you bottom time. Reduce all your effort to a minimum and your bottom time will increase accordingly. So, things to look at would be, efficient kicking down (are u kicking like crazy to get down?) Relaxing on your dive, keeping your heart rate low, glide instead of kick. If you want, add me on FB, we can chat some more.

    they have wetsuits to suit different water tempuratures. for eg: warm waters. your probably looking at 2.5mm thickness on the suit and me mate uses 5.5mm in england. but starting off in your local swimming pool with a mate is a good way to start to familarise your self.

    And exhale dive, and exhaling while submerged are different. My understanding on an exhale dive is that you first exhale on the surface, then proceed down the line, you feel the pressure increasing, and choose the stop when you feel you've reached your target/ limit. Now imagine exhaling during a freedive at depth, and the depth you reached was your comfortable full lung limit, but now suddenly you've got no air- and the squeeze to your lungs comes more rapidly than any slow exhale dive - ouch.

    • @zazugee
      @zazugee 6 років тому

      i think eric fatah, was advocating an empty lung dive, or exhale dive, and it's like you described, you exhale before you dive.

    • @andregoncalves7856
      @andregoncalves7856 8 років тому +1

      no, he isn't.You should never let go of the air in our lungs because your body keeps absorving the O2. If you exhale you body has nowhere to get O2 from and you probably oing to blackout.

    • @temrenalican4570
      @temrenalican4570 8 років тому

      What hes talking about is something completely different. Gas gets compressed at the high pressure, and if you have little gas in your lungs they will collapse.

    • @MY-si1hz
      @MY-si1hz 8 років тому +1

      Yes he is. It's called "Exhale Diving". It's a way to lower your residual volume after time, and a standard in any freediving school. You will use less oxygen by neutralizing your buoyancy with a slight exhale then you would constantly kicking to stay down.

    exhaling underwater is what you have to do for buoyancy tests though. Go to 30, breathe out everything, make sure you slowly float up. Then, go to 60, and stop. Make sure you're neutrally buoyant. This is what we were taught at least.

  • @bikewrecker1000
    @bikewrecker1000 11 років тому

    Hey, so you said not to breathe out when you're freediving. What about breathing out of your nose into your mask to help with the pressure on your eyes? And also when you're about to come back to the surface. Could you put your snorkel back in your mouth and clear it before you surface since you're going to have to breath out once you hit the surface anyways?

  • @freediverhd
    @freediverhd  11 років тому

    Basically your O2 is so low you cannot really function as normal... loss of motor control, might jerk a bit, shake a bit, you don't have much idea what is going on... and then you snap out of it. Blackout would be completely lights out.

  • @whynottalklikeapirat
    @whynottalklikeapirat 11 років тому

    I believe the meal/cramp thing has been disproved but that could be just for regular swimming. I don't know what the science behind it would be.

    • @whynottalklikeapirat
      @whynottalklikeapirat 11 років тому

      ***** Certainly. I'm a dive instructor myself and I never eat heavy meals before diving. Some foods even in small quantity will give you heart burn at depth as well I've noticed, no biggie but not pleasant either.
      But you know - the cramp thing - So many parents for so many years kept their kids from going bathing at the beach after lunch and breakfast, and while i agree that its probably not desirable for somebody with no water feeling or proper swimming skills to be all stuffed in deeper water, well I just experienced some needless hysteria that kept me out of the water that I love as a kid - so it matters to me whether there is something to it or not in a more general sense.
      I just never got how a sandwich in your stomach would make your leg muscles contract all of a sudden if they weren't going to anyway. Some foods like bananas thats potassium-rich even help prevent cramps as far as I know.

  • @MuchomorekStudio

    Freediver HD you told that you never exhale under water, but how about when you are practising at home? after the breath up, when you are going for the longest hold, do you exhale slowly or not at all? And why I am more willing to hold more when I am exhaling slowly than the other way around ? :) Thank you in advance

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  9 років тому +4

      Nadya Miroslavova when you hold your breath, you feel uncomfortable because of the co2 building up - not because your oxygen is low. When you exhale, you are getting rid of the co2 in your body so it feels like a releif.

    Hi, do you think it's good idea to hyperventilate when you do a static apnea ? I understand that you shouldn't do it when you freedive to depth because of the signal body gives you to go up, but in STA you simply pick your head up and breathe. With hyperventilation (OLNY IN STA of course) i feel comfortable more than 2 minutes (2:30 excatly) and the contractions are same strong as without HV when contractions strike already after 1:10.

    I used to get in heated discussions with my wife before spearfishing and freediving in the Marinas when I lived there (3 years). I said no or very little breakfast (a bite or two till lunch)...she hounded me to eat well...I almost always let it sit on the car seat while I hunted...every animal's stomach compresses and undulates during digestion to cover the pieces in stomach acid, that muscle movement inside you, can't be felt, but can be heard as the gases are gurgling...Simply put no one is as efficient with their oxygen when digesting...so to correct some opinions on this board...and thank the film author...we are all using more oxygen when we dive on a full stomach (a really bad idea considering LMC and SWB if you push your limits frequently) than if you dive empty...and you can safely dive empty for 5+ hours...the physical exertion is different when free diving than with more active sports...remember your spending most of your time relaxing and trying to use as little motion as possible while keeping your heart rate down. Great video! keep it up!

      Get with Morito at Aquasmith in Garapan...he runs a dive operation and guides spearfishing...he has always been very helpful and he speaks English very well. he can give you directions to the Bomber the Shenzen and the upside down Zero's by the channel in the lagoon. The bomber is only in 20 feet of water about 180-200 yards from managaha swimming towards Tanapag and its clear most of the time...were you there after a big storm? I am pretty sure I hit up all of the dive sites freediving and spearfishing in 3 years of living there (theres not a no fishing regulation in the CNMI for dive sites outside the protected areas), I have nearly been to them all...the most pleaseant free diving with wildlife is in the Nature preserves of Bird Island, and Forbidden Island (My favorite) no spearing there. Spearing was off Naftan point (took a trophy 27Lb Giant trevally during a spearfishing comp) and Punia Point at the tip of wedding cake on Rota where I missed a 4ft Wahoo...really Rota has a special place in my heart as a spearfisherman and freediver. I also spent a good deal of time at Lau Lau bay on Saipan because I lived just up the road at Facey Farms (2 minute drive) You can also Freedive or spearfish at IceCream...dive sites outside the protected areas are not prohibitive of careful spearfishing like they are in other places and you can freedive them all with a mixed group though I doubt anyone will let you spearfish with a dive group on the same boat...most chartered boats run abbout $40.00/8 hour day/ person with a full boat booking of 6-8 people with Morito so its a good deal...If you go to Guam ask for Scott Moen, or Francois they have a great boat and can take you to great spots while they spearfish and they are the best partners on the island to be with really. The Grotto is also fun a time or two. Dump Coke off Tinian is also promising for fishing not so much for freediving (Shallow). On Saipan... You definitely need to try the Wing Beach access to the North along the cliff you can access it by car or scooter and walk to the outlet...Great fishing and free diving potential as you can literally swim to Banzai and back which is awesome...Please always go with a buddy. ask Morito if there are other freedivers contact information he can give you may who want to explore with you...likely there are a handful available at the drop of a hat...best of luck and I hope you find the wrecks...very memorable...

      For sure, I left a lot of friends in Saipan when I left...You should definitely look into Bird island sanctuary for freediving, the breakers left of the island which will be just to your right looking at bird island from the secluded beach are accessible through a channel just to the left of the island, you need to swim in shallows to get to it, and sometimes it feels like the water is going out, other times going in as the current gently goes around the island and there is a shallow coral head wall that I once got pushed over comming back in...if you stick to the channel youll be just fine, just time your kicking with each wave and you can make it in against current if there is one (I have done that a good deal at Wing...hit it at low tide from May-July and avoid September-November (Stormy season If I recall correctly) Also Forbidden island as you hike down go left of the island you will find a large tide pool that opens to a channel you can swim out to the reef. it drops to 180ft after about 200 yards and there are so many fish varieties and coral heads to explore...those two are the most quiet and amazing places I have been on Saipan and I simply didn't get to freedive them enough. Your in for a treat if you can get out the channel water clarity past the breakers is as good as Palau. On wing beach there is usually a Rope with knots in the small channel that divers maintain for easy exit during current, but if it inst there you can go to the right coming in near and over the coral and catch the waves in...most of the current rips out the channel and the waves resupply the lagoon, be careful to always be moving foreward, if you get pulled back you risk breaking a fin...keep moving. On calm days the swimming is easy, but on rough days the fish are plentiful. Don't be surprised if you see Dog tooth Tuna, Wahoo, Giant Trevally and somewhat territorial bull sharks outside Wing up towards Banzai (arch your back at them and they will spook off), One of the largest groupers seen in the Marianas (180 Lbs) was landed there by Francois back in the 1990's. I sincerely hope you get to see Saipan at its best...If you have time also check out Rota...on Rota (called "Luta" by the locals) there is a cave with a 12 Noon shaft of light in the middle under wedding cake mountain with small to medium sized Trevally inside it all the time (take a glove off and wave it like a dead squid they will all come up to you if your breath hold is good)...really magical...Best of luck...and please keep in touch...

    first i would like to thanks you for all you're beautifull videos. they all makes me jalous about you're skills.
    second, i have to ask you a litle question. When you say ''never dive alone'', do you mean that you have a buddy every time with you (i see just one video were you are two freedivers)?
    sorry for my english, and please, continue to make us dream with your videos!!!

    The title is slightly confusing, makes it sound like the video will be about what freedivers forget to do, instead of what freedivers should not do.
    Couple things that are slightly wrong, blacking out with the snorkel in your mouth it will not drive water into your lungs since your body will experience a pharyngospasm upon blacking out, blocking off the airway into your lungs. This will only last ~3 minutes then your body will try to gasp for air. So regardless of if you have a snorkel in your mouth after the pharyngospasm subsides, you will take water into your lungs if not above the surface.
    Also all that hyperventilation means is that you a breathing at a higher rate then normal breathing. It is still common practice in competitive freediving, especially static apnea.

      That's awesome man about to check the vids out. I heard them talking at Shark-Con (happened a little over a week ago in Tampa Fld.) about how Tommy I forget his name is like the leader of Palau i think? And how them letting the sharks live there and clean the reefs and stuff is financially good for them because it attracts lots of tourists to the area to dive. This i think outweighs the money Palau gets from fishermen fishing in their water!

    Great video. Very informative. The information cramping is not necessarily correct, however. For the most part, nobody really knows why we cramp. One can have a surplus or deficiency of a variety of elements and still cramp. No two people are the same. Check out Noake's "Waterlogged" for detailed information about cramping.

    forget about depth - its all about how much effort you spend. work requires 02. the more effort you expend, the more 02 you burn.

    Very nice points, but I do have to partially disagree on one thing. I do lots of exhale freediving exercises. These exercises help develop your body's ability to reduce oxygen consumption. All mammals dive on exhale, allowing them to discard the problem of DCS. But, of course, no freediver should do this unless they know what they are doing, and always with a buddy. If you are interested in exhale freediving, research Sebastian Murat.

    I don't dive in the ocean because I can't find a Buddy, so I have to train in a pool with life guards.
