Excellent information. With so much disinformation out there about articulation finding this was a real eye opener. I had the same experience as you, and in fact I avoided using my tongue because very early on I saw UA-cam video of a very well known Berklee sax teacher saying he´d like to cut out his students tongues. He said you could get a better sound just having good technique. I am sure there is an argument for this, but after recording myself again and again, I could hear I needed articulation. So almost 4 years into learning sax I am beginning.
Thank you so much. I have been playing sax for three years and have been told that my tonguing is a bit “soft”. Asked if I was using my tongue on the reed, my answer was “Yes’. I WAS, but I was touching the end of the reed with my tongue. It was not until I saw your excellent demonstration in this video that I realised what I had been doing wrong for the last three years. I now have much more distinct articulation and phrasing. Thank you very much for the demonstration and advice.
Omg same here but 2 1/2 years. I just realized my tongue position has been wrong all this time 🙃Every time I filmed myself, the part between my neck and chin was moving a lot! And my embouchure was all tense haha all I need now is to correct that bad habit 😶 This is an excellent video!
Excellent tuition! I couldn’t believe the difference that good and proper articulation could make the Average White Band tune sound so good. Thank you Jamie . I’m off to practise this now! ❤
Great video Jamie, articulation can be a bit of a headache some videos I’ve watched say they wish sax players had there tongues removed 😝 this one really helps and “pick up the pieces” really demonstrates this, look forward to the next articulation videos!
Oh my gosh! I just had my first lesson yesterday and watching this I grabbed the neck and mouthpiece and learned so much of what I was doing wrong! I can't wait to practice tomorrow. THANK YOU!
I was finding articulation so difficult until I came across this video, thank you so much! A couple of coffees in the way before I begin the masterclass 😁 thanks again Jamie!
Thankyou. Such a comprehensive and easy to follow video. I started learning alto sax 2 weeks ago because I'm bored silly in lockdown and since having surgery. I'm a former pro bass trombonist (classical) and have been involved in music for almost 40 years. What I have found is that tonguing in principle is the same for the sax as for the trombone. However, what is very different is perfecting it when now I have s mouthpiece inside my mouth and previously it was up against my mouth. Changes things slightly when it comes to double & triple tonguing, circular breathing etc. Czardas isn't yet a part of my repertoire but I've set myself the goal of playing it before the end of the year. xx
Fantastic! Good luck with it all Laura. I've got loads of tips in my technique playlist that will help you. ua-cam.com/play/PLBRGEAheQrpmNJ5Utbv8F6W8jB-k_WAeX.html. Thanks for watching!

Thanks Jamie. I'm a beginner and found this very challenging, however, your video explained it very well. I've been working on it every time I practice now.
Jamie you’re awesome. I actually improved my low notes on your other video. You were the only one who covered the overbite, angle of tongue along with vowel shape and breathing. I reset and really focused and your method rocked. Also, liked the humor between you and Sax academy on tone video. Gonna check out your master class !
thanks jamie for putting up the video that really helped where to put your tongue correctly on the read i need to work on that big time im a beginner alto sax player next month will be one year since i've been practicing i go to practice in middletown delaware once a week on thursdays i want to play in a band someday i know i just got to keep practicing and maybe it will happen i just got to have confidence and believe in myself have a good day.

Thanks Jamie! Now I know why my playing doesn't quite sound right at times. My setup is a Selmer Bundy II, with a Yamaha C, and Legere American Cut 2.25; Hoping to upgrade soon. I started playing in September 2021 and practice an hour a day, but have never tongue. So tonguing is hard right now and it feels like relearning how to play.
Thanks for this, Jamie. I’ve been struggling with hitting the tip of the reed instead of connecting underneath. When I attempt staccato notes I get a THH sound instead of a clean stop. Greatly appreciate any tips or exercises to experiment to find the right pressure, muscle memory.
Awesome!! Hopefully you can do a lesson on Chuck mangione's Feels so good and Give it all you got ! This video will certainly help me improve my tonguing.

Hi Jamie, As always, very good and educational. Would you consider doing a video on Astor Piazolla's LIBERTANGO for Bb and Eb in keys of DM and AM respectively. There's a lot of staccato tonguing and fast, furious fingering to learn if you're new or not so new to playing sax. What's the best way to practice such semi-complex pieces? Really enjoying your lessons.
Thank you Jamie. There are givers and takers in this world and surely you are a giver. I am brand new to saxophone and have found your first four instructional videos extremely helpful. I actually will put my saxophone together tomorrow and give Mary Had A Little Lamb a go. I will be 69 the end of this month and love the saxophone. I know this is a terribly open question, but once I learn the basic notes should scales be concentrated on mostly? I greatly appreciate your help. John here, from the back-roads of Tennessee. :)>
Great video, Jamie. I don't think I've been using the right part of my tongue to articulate, and this video helps. If I may ask, is it best to keep the middle and back of my tongue down between my molars normally, and only lift it up for a particular effect?
First thing is to swab it every time you play. I guess you could sanitise with Milton’s fluid or whatever but don’t leave it standing in it. It’s quite easy to discolour mouthpieces.
I'm coming into this from Bagpipes. I'll tell you what, the "C" shape with the hands (curved fingers) is something I have to think about or they will straighten as per proper chanter fingering technique. It's going to be an interesting journey!
I guess some people don't have a high F# key and that will be their limit on some scales. You should play up as high as you can for your ability though. :-)
How can I vary the loudness of the tone? You sometimes use the analogy of a pressured hose or tap which can be released a little but with backpressure still remaining. But I cannot remember you ever explaining what you mean with that, how it's done. Is it breath control? Or tongue? or both? or what?

Confusion! I was checking out George Garzone master class from Moscow. He says don’t use too much tongue in jazz because goes against the flow…or something like that.
Hello Jamie, I've been playing just over a year, I'm 69 and it's my first serious instrument !! I'm working through your videos. Just realised I never learned to tongue from the beginning !! I have a tenor and used a Yamaha 4C with a 2.5 American cut . I got quite used to it and was getting on fine... until i dropped and broke both the 4C and the reed. I have gone back to cane reeds,(Legere 2.5) and bought a Select Jazz 7. I just can not get on with the Jazz, I miss a lot of notes. run out of breath but those higher notes sound great when I do get them, Should I persevere or go back to a 4C and the American cut or am I doing something wrong ?? I asked this question on your live you Tube but I wasn't clear as to what the problem was. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.
Struggling with legato tonguing since I started playing 4 years ago. I can only legato tongue on repeated notes, but cannot legato tongue from one pitch to another. There’s always a gap. If I tongue extremely slow from one note to another there’s still a slight gap. Is this a coordination of tonguing and fingers flaw I have? My finger technique is very good. I can play Sanborn and top 49 pop song solos that I have transcribed and etudes no problem and clean as long as I slur.

That doesn’t sound quite right! Almost impossible to diagnose specific issues like this on a UA-cam comment, but just make sure you aren’t sticking your tongue between the reed and the mouthpiece.
@@GetYourSaxTogether Ok, so you now how you've kinda gotta have not so much of a fluffy soft tung when doing a march? I hope you do, I won't shame you for it since im in highschool and your way past that, anyways, I'm asking for like tips on how to like tounge faster but have control over your air at the same instant that way your not the only alto sax blarring in your marching band, I just need like you know, should I put my toung like more under my lip or something like that
Hulkamazing ok, so you’re right, I’ve never played in a marching band so don’t really know what the requirement is, but maybe just try and use the area just back from the tip of your tongue and tongue just back from the tip of the reed. Not in between the reed and the MP. Hope that helps.
The problem is mostly with continuous notes in a Melody . For example if I'm playing A Bb Bb Bb . Bb.... The Bb notes have poor articulation. It just sounds like one stream of notes (rushed)
@GetYourSaxTogether no, roof mouth behind front teeth. I've tried touching reed but hasn't really worked for me. I'm not a professional but did get to grade seven once upon a time. Better Sax guy does quite a good video on the subject
First thing to determine is whether or not you have an air leak. If all the pads are not properly sealing the tone holes your horn will squeak. I recommend you find a qualified sax technician in your area.
Hmm..I had a teacher that once said( not to me): If there is one thing I wich I could do with all my new students, that would be to cut out their tounge! He talked a lot about beginner and intermediate students overusing their tounge and tounging way too much resulting in too much staccato in their jazz phrases, or not enough “flow” in their lines...But watching you’re video Im starting to think he was kind of wrong..
Well, I dunno, I guess it all depends on the player and what result they're getting. I think you'll enjoy the Tonguing Part 2 video on jazz articulation coming out on August 23rd 2020. Thanks for watching and let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. J😊

The horrifying squeak, what is the cause?
Very hard to say on a comment!
You dont need to touch the reed! Its about airflow control with the tongue
Emmm…you never touch the reed with your tongue?
@GetYourSaxTogether no, roof mouth behind front teeth. I've tried touching reed but hasn't really worked for me. I'm not a professional but did get to grade seven once upon a time. Better Sax guy does quite a good video on the subject
@@searcherholic3473 well I never.
@GetYourSaxTogether surely , if you make a 'ta' sound with your tongue while playing that's
tongueing? Please advise!
@@searcherholic3473 no, tonguing is touching the reed with your tongue. See my videos on articulation! 😜
Sometimes I get a squeaking sound when I tongue (Helpppp)
First thing to determine is whether or not you have an air leak. If all the pads are not properly sealing the tone holes your horn will squeak. I recommend you find a qualified sax technician in your area.
@@GetYourSaxTogether No leaks, I can practice for an hour with no squeaking but when I try tonguing I get a squeak…Three months play (or trying) sax
Oh yea, it’s my first time trying it
Advocate of two set ling ling here to laugh at viola on behalf of everyone. Awesome vid though
No idea what you’re talking about! 😂
I want to learn sax but i don't have. :(
Em, ok. lol
< I am sure you know of the Music of the Dominican Republic ( ...in the Caribean) MERENGUE. The arti-tongue-culations are insane. Personally the style drives me up the wall but I really admire the Sax Players ! Check them out ! > Greetings from Nicaragua...kidnapped by of criminal regime. >
Yeh I played in a merengue band once. Couldn’t handle it!
